Firefly- better without Serenity?
Back To The Future- better without parts 2&3?
Matrix- better without movies 2&3 (I guess that's a given...)?
Star Wars- better without chapters 5&6?
Star Trek TOS- better without the subsequent movies?
Planet Of The Apes- better without the movies after the first one?
Buffy- better without seasons 4-7?

Are continuations a GOOD thing, or do they inevitably tarnish the original?

I feel like Serenity *could* have been better with a slightly different focus, but overall, no. Too much I love about it.
Back to the Future - it was all funtimes to me
Matrix - Absolutely should have left it at one
Star Wars - ugh. yeah.
Star Trek - subsequent movies I was okay with
Planet of the Apes - yeah, never should have made more, the ending on the first one was so perfect
Buffy - I disagree, I liked seasons 4-7 (yarly).

IMHO:

Firefly….Joss found himself somewhat in a pickle with making Serenity. Stay true to the fans that were there from the beginning and introduce new fans to already complicated characters. I think he did good so I give a thumbs up on the BDM.

Back To The Future….only saw the first one and really enjoyed it.

Matrix…. Thought they were pretty good….and we got Gina in the last one….sweet!

SW….1&2 were Ok…..never been a big fan of SW that much.

ST….Guess I’m a Trekster from way back….the movies were OK…..the last one was COOL!

PotA…one of the best si/fi movies of all time. The second one was a remake, not really a continuation…..and imo it was terrible!

Buffy……haven’t seen seasons 4-7.…but I do like the first three.

Firefly- better without Serenity? The film gave us some closure. In a second film I would like to see the crew screwing up a simple job and Mal yelling "Why does it get so complicated?" Serenity was a great stand alone film.

Back To The Future- better without parts 2&3? Liked ONE and THREE and I guess you need TWO to link them, but did not like it as much.

Matrix- better without movies 2&3 (I guess that's a given...)? Put the final battle on the end of first film and destroy movies TWO and THREE.

Star Wars- better without chapters 5&6? All three original films were great. I notice you don't bring up ONE thruogh THREE. I wouldn't either.

Star Trek TOS- better without the subsequent movies? When I go to my videos, "Wrath of Khan" is the only Star Trek film my hand will reach for. I actually have two of the latter ones and they just collect dust.

Planet Of The Apes- better without the movies after the first one? I don't like this series.

Buffy- better without seasons 4-7? Gotta have all the variations of Willow. So yes, you need all the seasons.

STORYMARK

I disagree on all series, except Planet of the Apes. Otherwise, I think there are stories ranging from great (Empire, some Buffy eps, Serenity) to at least interesting (I think the Matrix sequels have a lot going for them, even if the whole is lesser than the sum of it's parts).

I sepreate the first Starwars Trilogy from the second one... the only thing i like about the newer installments is that they tell the backstory, and the kids I worked with when they came out loved them so much they wanted to see the originals, and what kid doesn't like Hansolo stormtroopers, Chewbacca and Ewoks? I didn't like any of the Matrix films. loved season 6&7 of Buffy, less keen about seasons 4 & 5. have a few issues with Serenity compared to Firefly, but ultimately the funny bits, the scary bits, the sad bits, the nostalgia factor and the inclusion of Chiwetel Ejifor outway the bits that make me grimace.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

We should only make series that consist of 1 show.

After the pilot, it's all down hill.

Serenity is the perfect continuation imo so no, Firefly isn´t better without it.

Back to the future - No.

Matrix - Yes, it would be better, but there´s still good things about the sequels.

Star Wars- And miss out on the greatest twist of all? No definitely not better. Better without episodes 1-3 perhaps.

Star Trek - Well, the even number movies are ok so no. Also the new one is the best.

Planet of the Apes- Yes.

Buffy- No, I liked season 4 & 5 a lot and there can never be too much Spike.

Continuations can be good, more so if they don´t do them just because the first movie happened to make money.. Like District 9 although considering the people involved, I have hope for that.

While I don't think the BDM is as good as the BDS, I think the overall mythology is better for having some legitimate continuation/conclusion.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: The first movie is the best, but the others are still entertaining.

MATRIX: Should have stopped at one. Definitely.

STAR WARS: Since EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is probably one of the best movies ever made, the series is certainly better for having continued. I know that a lot of people don't love the prequels, but if nothing else, they add new context to the original trilogy. For example, we now know exactly why Luke was so whiny. On a more serious note, though, the whole "always two there are" thing really re-frames the battle near the end of RotJ.

In addition, I think they were a boon to Star Wars fans (a lot of the prequel-era EU stuff is far superior to the original trilogy-era EU stuff) and to the sci fi industry in general. Let's be honest, when the prequels came around, everything that was old was new again. You think we'd have FIREFLY, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, heck, even a GI JOE movie without the prequels? Think again.

STAR TREK: Don't much care. The less, the better.

PotA: Again, don't much care, but I do know the world would be a better place without the Burton movie.

BUFFY: I'm a big fan of seasons 6 and 7, so I'm quite happy with where it ended up. I have mixed feelings on the comic version of Season 8, but I'm still happier with it than without.

I generally feel that continuations are good. But only if they are done right. It does depend on many factors and there are a lot that are not worthy.

On the plus side we have Aliens, Mad Max 2, Terminator 2, Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2, The Bourne sequels, Batman Returns and The Dark Knight.
Buffy's story wouldn't have come to any kind of conclusion,
And look at how Browncoats feel now about no more FF/S. Imagine if all we had was the series and nothing to keep us going in those early years. Would this site still be here now? Would we still be posting here if it was.

On the negative side we have The Matrix sequels (although I don't rate the first movie anywhere near as high as I used to either), Godfather 3, Alien 3, Alien Ressurection, Terminator 3, Dark Angel S2 (that one's for you Chris), Batman Forever, Batman And Robin, the Highlander sequels and the endless sequels to horror movies.

For TV shows to work they really have to continue into at least a second season but the makers should realise when to call it quits. Buffy worked as whole over the 7 seasons, so did Angel iver it's 5 seasons. Some were of course better than others but were any of them really bad? Especially when compared to other shows.
For shows I've watched myself then The 4400 and The Dead Zone should have cleared up their story when the danger of cancellation loomed. Smallville should have finished several seasons ago instead of repeating the same stories over and over.

Most movies probably don't need a sequel(s) but some do have other stories to tell. The Star Trek TOS movies are a worthy continuation. The Toy Story trilogy is worthy and feels like a complete story of the life of toys through one boys younger life.
On another note imagine what we may have thought about a sequel to E.T. Or to Close Encounters, The Sixth Sense or even Goodfellas.

Overall they are a good thing but you have to filter the not-so-good to get at the rarer gems that are out there.
Remakes are another story but even they have some good ones.
