I have not felt so right about something in a long time, as I have in watching Firefly. This was something special, something never done before. This is something that should not have died so young, but have lived to a ripe old age. I don't understand why more options haven't been explored. Why has Joss not brought the show to UPN or the WB, SCI-FI or ABC/CBS/NBC? Any of them... Why not even HBO, where anything could go on this show. I don't understand it. Fox is obviously not the right place to be with this show, so let's go somewhere else! Joss isn't some newbie director, he created Buffy and Angel two of the biggest shows in history! I don't understand why everyone gave up.

I know some people, some people who may be able to help, I am not giving up on this show. All of you want to help, so let's do it. This show was something more then just another great show that was cancelled, and I think not only we know that, but the entire cast and crew of Firefly know this. With all the piss-poor reality shows clogging our airwaves, and the mildly satisfying sitcoms, we need a show like this in our lineup. Anyone with half a brain would know this show is not just a half-assed attempt, but this is something bigger then all of us.

Watch the show, watch the special features, you'll see that no one wants this show to die. We have to bring it back, and do more then just sign a petition. Let's work with people we know, and figure out a way to bring this back to life in any way we can.

Life is to short to let an opportunity like this pass us by. Joss, if you see this, please, pull some strings, do something, anything to bring this show back to us. Firefly is not just a show, but a way of life.

Scan the archives here a bit. From everything we know, Joss tried all of the options you mentioned, and many of us have spent the last year and a half as frustrated and disillusioned as you seem to be. It's really sobering to see something so beautiful passed over so callously.

Everyone involved knows how good it was and that's why, despite being turned down by every single broadcast outlet, they've refused to give up. So we've got a movie being made, and the potential for a trilogy. To pull that off required a deal with the devil (fox) that, reportedly, precludes any televised version for at least five years (Jewel Staite was quoted as saying that the stipulation was for ten years).

It's bittersweet inspiration to see an artist in Joss's position putting so much on the line for a work he clearly loves. It's equally disheartening to know that it won't be in the format it was designed for. The movies will be wonderful, I have no doubt, but they won't be the same as getting a weekly fix for the many, many seasons Firefly deserved.

Everything is renegotiable, but it seems really unlikely that it will take off again in series form. It's pretty uncommon for a series to move from television to the big screen and then back. Far more likely would be a spin off or expanded franchise series if the movies are a hit, but I'm wondering if Joss isn't kind of sick of trying to make things work in the dung heap of broadcast TV altogether.

If you have any new ideas, but all means lets talk about them, but be prepared for plenty of 'been there, done that'. It's been a long haul. Welcome to the fold.

When I show the series to people, they can't believe it was canceled. They're sad and frustrated, naturally, and reluctant to watch the last episode because they know there aren't any more. Then I tell them to go see the movie in April and they perk up a bit. But just imagine, I tell them, those dark days when there WAS no movie to look forward to...

You know. . .this is how I picture this happening. . .every day, all over the world.

Some random person is walking through a store that sells DVDs and sees an interesting box labelled "Firefly". Maybe the name rings a bell, maybe not. . .but for whatever reason, they pick it up, purchase it, take it home and watch "Serenity."

Then they watch the rest.

Then they are hooked. They go on the internet, type "Firefly" into their favorite search engine. . .and manage to find their way here where one of the first things they do is cry their outrage at the show's cancellation and ask if there's something we can do to bring it back.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

We have all been where you are right now Siraris. Many of us were here when the show was in the limbo that is Fox's "hiatus" status. Many of us were here while we pitched in w/ the post card campaign in an effort to save the show. Then came cancellation. We were all more depressed and disillusioned than I can ever recall being over any show.

As my fellow browncoats pointed out, Joss tried every network in an effort to get someone to pick up the show. All of them declined, a decision I think they will come to regret once the BDM (Big Damn Movie) is a success.

Through the efforts of Joss and the fanbase we were able to get the DVD set released, which far surpassed the sales expectations of Fox and Mutant Enemy. Those sales and Joss inspired Universal to back the movie, which is being filmed even as you read this post. The film is due for release April 22nd of 2005.

Thank you all for your responses. I wish I could have shared in the pain that you all went through, as this show deserves it.

I keep getting my hopes up, that someone will realize what they have lost here. I don't see how a show like Stargate (which I never really enjoyed but I know a lot of others who do) could stay on the air for so long, and even have a spinoff, and we could lose our Serenity so fast. We live in a culture of instant gradification, fast paced action, and reality TV. If our television shows don't encompass that, then obviously they aren't worth watching. Some shows, like Sopranos, Six Feet Under, try and convey a message and develop the characters in a way that I think Firefly tried to do, which means there is still a glimmer of hope that humanity is not lost.

I just feel like not only did we lose a show, but this is a real testament of how our culture has become. I personally am a game developer working on a project that is trying to change the way video games are seen. We want to get away from that fast paced action, pretty graphics, no plot development, no character development, that has plagued games for a very long time. One of my biggest fears, is that we will not succeed, just like Firefly, because we do not cater to the cookie cutter image the game industry has become. The same thing goes with Firefly, as it breaks out from the mold.

We cannot give up on this. Look at Family Guy, it's coming back, just because of the boxset sales. I have talked to numerous people lately, and recommended the show to all my friends. I also happen to know someone very close to me who is big in the entertainment industry, and I am going to try and show him the show and see how he reacts. If he likes it, he may be able to think of something to do, although I don't know what else really can be done if every network has turned the show down. I also find hope in Serenity, the movie, that it will be like Stargate, where the movie came first and the series spawned from that. We all have to pray that just one person who can make a difference see's the movie, or the boxset, and we can get our precious show back.

It's great to know a place like this exists, where there is a last bastion of people who really appreciate things that are special in life.
