Serenity is the best movie ever put to film!!
Just seein' it again like I did makes me brim with near worship of Joss.
2005 was the end of the SF apex IMO. An era gone by.

It's all a lateral thing from now on. To equal Serenity, or to come close.

I conjure it just hits me in a place that's important to me.

Not many times I walked out of a movie so blown away I could barely speak.
I can list 'em all quickly:

Star Wars
Superman: The Movie
Empire Strikes Back
Blade Runner
The Matrix
Serenity

It certainly impacted me as well. But mostly due to the relationship I had with the characters - which was not the result of the film. So, it's success for me is entirely contingent on the TV show - which automatically degrades it as a "great" film for me. It's still a good one, a really good one, but on strictly it's own merits, it doesn't quite make the cut.

Yeah, without the emotional investment I carried into the theatre from the series, I suspect I would have just thought it was a really cool & strange little SF film. Kinda like Supernova or something, but with clever dialogue.

I think one of the scenes from The BDM which would really grab my attention, had I never seen the series, would be when Kaylee and Simon 'get busy', and River's head pokes down from the ceiling, to get a better look.

That still kills me!

I have to concur Chris.

For a long while cinema had lost it's shine for me. In part due to the fact I had studied film and the magic was chipped away some, and later partly because my career took a detour towards directing; an experience that had me feeling very disheartened with the whole medium.

So I bailed out for a stint. I found it very difficult to engage with cinema for the longest while. A few films came along that piqued my interest for various reason, but nothing so forceful as to make me gaze up in wonder as I used to... And still I found it disconcerting watching the illusions up there on screen...

Then came Firefly...

Here was a show that just fueled my love for story telling, and it was evident that those responsible for the show were enjoying what they were doing. An unquantifiable energy crackling within the box every week. What fun. What characters. What sadness. What a show! Then it was cancelled and the whole ugly sense of injustice consumed all aspects of my entertainment.

Bugger!

But alas! A resurrection (no not that one) but SERENITY. 2005! Could a film of my favourite show be the spark to re-ignite my love of cinema? It was too much to hope for. I kept a low profile and avoided ALL aspects of the pre-release chatter regarding SERENTIY for fear it could not live up to the hype.

So i went to the flicks. Took my dad. A hardened sourpuss when it comes to Sci-fi. (He doesn't even like Star Wars). I was taking a risk.

By the films end, my dad was awestruck! Me too! I had a head full of conflicting emotions. My Dad and I discussed the film for hours. Why Book? Why Wash? Why indeed would you try to make people better?! Why am I so passionate about this film? Passion... Of course! The essential ingredient necessary to engage with a film on an emotional level... Suddenly all those twists and turns and cuts and edits Joss had taken made sense. It was a design, a clever design, constructed to have me hold my breath for 2 hours in wonder at what flickered above me; so much so, that I found myself unable to stop talking about it, and I wanted everyone I knew to go see it too, because I wanted them to realise how great cinema could be again...

Good ol' Joss. He knocked the stumps right out of the ground!

(ok - I might of got a little carried away there...)

Sleepy, Chris, fellow Browncoats......that is what I mean by Church!

Passion my friend, passion!

I think, in that speech, you describe what it means to be a Browncoat.

"that I found myself unable to stop talking about it, and I wanted everyone I knew to go see it too, because I wanted them to realise how great cinema could be again..."

Preach it!

Hey Chris,

All great movies, let alone, great sci-fi movies.

Love comes to mind, although people say you can't love an inanimate object, I disagree.

Those movies you listed are a part of me, and love keeps them in the air.........

Chris,
You make a good point. It is without question my favorite sci-fi movie since ALIENS...nearly 20 years before it.

But what really makes my blood boil is this:
Firefly was a well written show. Joss not only had a well written show on his hands, but obviously he had the imagination to back it up. What a fantastic(and rare) combo in television(or film.

I know this has been said 1,000 times before, but if Serenity would have been paced out over 6 more season as Firefly, then it would have been much, much better. Or at least that seems to be the consensus last time it was polled. But we will never know, and I do love Serenity.
