Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Gawd, I love 'em!

It’s been almost ten years since Firefly aired and almost ten years since it was cruelly cancelled, but its Browncoated fans are still passionate as ever about Joss Whedon’s space Western. It turns out that the cast of the former Fox show is equally passionate.

At a panel at New York Comic Con 2012, Jewel Staite (Kaylee) and Sean Maher (Dr. Simon Tan) talked about the show with fans and the disembodied voice of Nathan Fillion, who chatted over the phone. But it didn’t take long for Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds) to surprise them—and us—with an entrance.

The trio had an easy rapport with each other and their fans. Here are some of the highlights:

Fan shouting from crowd: We love you, Jewel!
Staite: I love you more, goddamn it.

Voice of Fillion: Hi, Jewel. ‘Sup?
Staite: Why are you always so creepy on the phone?

Staite: I wish Adam was here to talk about guns.

Fillion: I like guns when I get to shoot ‘em. I don’t like when I get shot.

Staite: I have nothing but crazy fond memories.
Maher: I hated it. [Smiles] I loved it.
Staite: Did you like your vest?
Maher: That was my favorite part.

Host: What was it like being cancelled?
Nathan: Imagine having the most beautiful girlfriend…
Staite: Or boyfriend.
Maher: Or boyfriend.

An audience member asked which episode they would write and direct:
Staite: I would shoot a gun. Simon is nude in this episode. And oily, for some reason.

Fillion: Kaylee is separated from the crew… She kicks some ass and does it in a big way…and she never tells anybody. That night, she bursts into Simon’s room and says, “Mama needs some me time.”
Maher: I smell an Emmy.

An audience member asked if Fox were to apologize for cancelling the show, how would the panelists want them to do it?
Fillion: I’m going to need a well-appointed tropical island for which every year a cruise ship would arrive with Firefly fans. And it would have a replica of the ship for which we could play out scenes from the show.
Staite: You’re so weird.

Staite: I want to hear Adam sing. Without alcohol.

Maher: Keep your pants on.
Audience member: [shouts] And take your shirt off!

Staite, talking about her guest appearance on Supernatural: That was a fun week, my friends. I just wish [the cast] weren’t so ugly.

Fillion: If we’re dreaming, you guys tell me what you think of this: Firefly, the animated series.

Staite [referring to the dress she wore in “Shindig”] Do I still have the dress? Let me tell you something about that dress. I hated that dress. The first six hours were supercool, and then I had to pee.overheard-at-new-york-comic-con-2012s-firefly-panel

Fans of Firefly, myself included, are still bemoaning the loss of one of our favorite shows ten years since it came and went off the air. A chance to see the cast is absolutely worth the price of the flight to San Diego Comic-Con. But some of us have jobs, pets, and parole restrictions, so that dream of seeing Captain Tightpants on the Firefly panel is only a dream. But wait…the Science Channel knows your frustration. They can’t ask your parole officer to let you out of state. But they can bring the cast of Firefly to you.

The Science Channel, which airs reruns of Firefly, will be filming the Comic-Con reunion, which includes star Nathan Fillion and creator Joss Whedon. The panel, along with footage of a round-table interview, will be collected in a 10-year-anniversary special.

Entertainment Weekly wrote,

“Firefly is a landmark work of science fiction and a favorite with our viewers,” said Debbie Myers, general manager and executive vp of Science. “Ever since it premiered on Science, fans have asked us to do something special to mark its 10-year anniversary. With this signature celebration, punctuated by Browncoats Unite, we will connect the minds behind this classic franchise with its legions of passionate fans.”

The Firefly special, Browncoats Unite, will air on the Science Channel on November 11…right after an all-day marathon.

Best gorram post I've seen in a while.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.
