I have to admit that I was extremely angry when I found out Firefly was going off the air. I didn't believe they had the ability to create or stick with a show that showed promise of being more than mindless drivel. Imagine my complete surprise when I found out that FOX is doing a BAYWATCH MOVIE! That's right: Baywatch: Wedding in Hawaii where, get this, Mitch gets married in Hawaii. Good lord, this is pure genius. Guess when its running? A Friday in February. Who needs Firefly when you can have a barechested Knight Rider in some of the most thought-provoking and ground-breaking scenes in TV history. Truly amazing!

Can we get an emoticon for extremely bitter, please?

When I broke the news to a Firefly watching friend of mine this morning, she gave me this quote that, while it didn't make me feel better, did make me laugh. As I lamented the fact that Firefly is going to be replaced by something inane and insipid and all of those other derogatory in- words, she said to me...

"People who actually have brain cells are an oppressed minority."

Do you hear that? We're an oppressed minority! Our rights are being trampled on! I say we form a group called the "Association for the Advancement of People with Brain Cells" - the AAPBC. We could picket Fox...

Well to the suspected "opressed people with brain cells" i would like to point out there are these huge building called libraries found all over the world in almost every city or town and this whole industry called publishing and they exist for people just like you. These two huge institutions have and produce these things called books. Can you say books.

Its TV folks, not brain surgery. Even Firefly is mostly a viseral experiance not some "High" form art. god i hate elitism.

"I am smarter then you becouse I watch better TV then you do" bleh :P

I, on the other hand, get a big kick out of hypocrisy. "You shouldn't be an elistist about what TV shows you watch--because obviously books are better than all of them!"

Hook,

The reason Firefly has been cancelled, first and foremost is because the medium it is being presented in panders to idiots. You may find it elitist of me to remove myself from that group, but I don't care. I'm sick to death of living in a world swarming with small souled morons, and I take pride in viewing myself as a better person because I can see truth and beauty that they ignore.

Actually i wouldn't say it panders to idiots but panders to a BROAD audiance. Becouse of how television is set up and the costs its production imposses it is limited in the ability to be diverse.

In regards to to the post above yours, the one calling me a hypocrite, i would like to point out these limitations are not found in books. Books are not nessarily "better" but they do offer a range and depth of diversity not found with television, allowing for people like us who have eclectic (Note: eclectic is not "better") tastes a chance to find and enjoy what we like.

If you are upset with what the broad audiance considers to be "truth and Beauty" then I suggest you read a book. You are more likely to find what you consider "truth and beauty" there, simply becouse of the mediums breadth of diversity.

Wow... I never thought that my original post was going to be taken seriously. I apologize if I came off sounding like an elitist, or rude, or whatever. I was totally being sarcastic. I was responding in the vein of "bash FOX with a little funny added in" rather than "be an elitist intellectual snob."

I do read books... I have quite a few of them. I also like to watch TV on occasion, and when I posted I was a bit peeved that something I loved and found interesting was going to be replaced with something that PROBABLY was going to be less um... engaging. I'm sorry if I offended.

An interesting note... perhaps I AM an intellectual snob... a friend of mine once made me a sign for my dorm room that said "warning: this room contains an intellectual snob. enter at own risk." We had a good laugh over it, but I never thought I'd actually be called one seriously! *shockshock*

Well, I'm off to watch the new Firefly in a bit, and mourn.

We aren't thinking about FOX anymore. We are
sending postcards to UPN to bug them into buying
firefly. There is the possibility, especially
if lots of fans write to UPN and CBS (owns UPN).
Joss may have already done this, and we may find out within a week.

FOX just seems to cater to a different audience,
I do notice that the more brainless shows air there. I will probably not watch FOX anymore.

And hey, Firefly books would really rule.

Books!
Canceling the show is bad. It is in my opinion one of the only shows worth watching on TV. (There is so much CRAP!!)

But if someone could make a series of books based on the show, I would love to get them! Books are always better than shows anyway.

Man, it just bugs me that the show is going off the air. It's just so damn creative an unique. I love that it is character driven instead of technology driven. And it's quirky sense of humour is awesome. I actually look forward to Fridays in part for the new FF episode.

Sigh.
Good things never last forever.

I haven't noticed that. In general, the popular books--the ones you're likely to find--have approximately the same level of diversity as my TV. There are several bookshelves' worth of Chicken Soup for the Souls and cheesy romances and Dean Koontz's 50,000 ripoffs of himself. It seems to me I'm about as likely to find a new Firefly on TV as I am to find a new Speaker for the Dead at a bookstore.

Isn't Speaker for the Dead pretty much in every bookstore with books. (Cuz, y'know, there are those book stores that only sell cofee.) Speaker is a pretty recognized book (although I haven't read it cuz I hated Ender's Game).
