With news that family guy in america is going to restart production due to unexpected sales for the dvds it got me thinking that Firefly HAS proven itself on dvd and also like family guy produced by fox,so will fox now re think there ideas and give firefly the chance it should of got in the start or wait to see what happens with the planned movie ?

I think the problem here is that Fox sold the rights for Firefly to Universal, so they could look at making the movie. We are uncertain if Fox sold only movie rights or all the rights. One thing is certain, Fox has made no move to do anything w/ Firefly, even though it is apparent the DVD set is surpassing the expected sales numbers. Honestly I don't think Fox would touch the show as it is not in keeping w/ their current programming (read "garbage").

I think right now we are holding our breath hoping for the movie. The script is done, and I am sure Universal is watching the DVD sales to get a feel for the profit potential for the movie, and weighing that against production costs. If the money looks right, I don't doubt they will make the movie.

My concern lies beyond the movie. If the film does well, will Joss settle w/ movies as his venue to tell the story, or is there a chance it will return to the small screen? Personally I would love to see Firefly back on TV so long as Joss keeps creative control and the network execs keep their hands off of it. I think with the fanbase we have now, the sales of the DVD, and the new fans logging on to the board nearly everyday, there is no way the show would not bring in good ratings on the right network on the right night.

That's the same way I see it. If Fox sold all the rights (one can only hope) we can find some small hope in the fact that Universal owns NBC, SciFi, and Bravo. Bravo just brought back "Keen Eddie", and has the rights to make a second season if the reruns and unaired episodes do well. So... there is precedent for Universal reviving a series.

True. I read about Bravo bringing back "Keen Eddie". It would exceedingly shiny if they do the same w/ Firefly.

To me, it wouldn't make sense for Universal to have purchased the TV rights to the show. They were offered them after FOX cancelled the show (via it being pitched to SciFi) and declined. There is no evidence or eason that they would have changed thier minds.

I also agree that with the DVD sales looking good, the movie has a really good shot of being made. They wouldn't have opioned the rights for the movie and commisioned a script if they weren't at least inerested in making it.

As for after the movie, I still think that there is some hope in the direct to DVD market. I say that because of all the talk of the direct to DVD 24 spinoff becoming a reality. If that (24 direct to DVD0 sells well, coupled with the better than average DVD set sales for Firely, and with (hopefully) good move results, we could see a mini-series type production made for DVD.

Just my optimistic $.02.

Sci Fi turned down Firefly, what, nearly a year ago? A lot has changed in a year. First off, Universal, who owns Sci Fi channel, now own at least the movie rights, and very likely the TV rights as well. They are looking at the script to do the movie. If the movie does well, coupled w/ the DVD sales, why would they not pick up the show as a regular TV series on a network they own? If there is money to be made, and DVD sales and a successful movie (keep your fingers crossed) would mean there is a profit to be made, you can bet that Universal will do it.

Add to this that Universal has recently partnered w/ NBC. Hopefully this means that Sci Fi will know have the resources and capital to produce a show like Firefly.

I s'pose it really all lies in wether or not Universal owns the TV rights as well as the movie rights.

Would be nice if they did, for all the reasons you pointed out. Plus NBC has Nathion Fillion on contract, so it could help get him free of other obligations, at least.

I still haven't seen anything 'official' about who owns the TV rights to the show. If Fox still owns them, and themovie is a hit, they don't have a whole lot of options.

With the Family Guys return, it's already clear that FOX WON'T be broadcasting them. They are commisioning some episodes to be made and distributed via other methods (selling them to other networks, DVD sales, who knows). But they DID say that they wouldn't be on FOX. I've read that they couldn't do it because it 'would be a dangerous president'. Who knows.

So, assuming Fox owns the TV rights still, and the movie is as successful as we all know it will be, I can't imagine Fox letting go of a money making oppurtunity. However, the chances it will be put onto Fox again are very low, and the show is to high budget to be on FX. But they do seem to be looking for alternative ways of distrobution, and Firefly seems like an ideal cantidate to further test the market (has an installed, dedicated fanbase, there aren't any other options to get the programming, and a dedicated cast/cre/creator who seems to be willing to try new things and take some risks).

But, here's to hoping Universal grabbed up all the Firefly rights!

I hope they make a film, it would be provide more vindication than the DVD sales. But I don't think it's going to happen. At this point, I'd settle for a comics version.

I haven't read anywhere that Fox sold the television rights to Universal. It wouldn't be prudent to completely sell off an entire property so early on. Look how the dvd sales have taken off. That alone increases the value of the Firefly property from just a few months ago. Fox is too business savy to just give away their properties so quickly and cheaply, even if it was a doomed series. It's more likely they would sell off pieces of the rights while maintaining ownership of the original show. Lets put it this way, if Universal makes the movie and it becomes a hit, look at the potential gold mine that Fox owns. Personally, I see a movie for the small screen being done, like how Battlestar Galactica was reborn.
