So...assuming Serenity goes big, what will they call the sequels?

Some ideas:

Sequel 1: Whore Academy
Sequel 2: Revenge of the Very Fine Hat

or...

Sequel 1: For the Love of Niska (subtitled--Terror on the Skyplex)
Sequel 2: A Mighty Fine Shindig

or...

Sequel 1: Serenity: The Big Damn Sequel

It rhymes and everything!

On a more serious note, perhaps, "Blue Sun Rising" would be a more appropriate name. Sorry, but I can't think ahead to a 3rd sequel yet...have to see what happens in the second!

"v/r" is military shorthand for "Very Respectfully", used primarily in short notes and memos.

'-zed' is a little more obscure. First, I'm an Anglophile. I married an English woman a little over 17 years ago (and counting, thanks). There is much to admire about English culture; as well as much to find fault in. Like any other human culture, non?

Second, my roots are Cajun (though I was born and raised in Texas). My father's name was Gerald -- God rest his soul -- and my grandparents' nickname for him was 'Jed'. A 'cadian farmer's nickname. So, 'zed' has a familiar feel to me somehow, through all of that.

I confess I got the notion of shortening my sig because Joss always signs his posts '-j'; ergo, '-zed'. Call me a fanboy, if you will; but I confess to admiring our modern-day Shakespeare, and a little emulation of him and the English-usage alphabet is not so terribly shameful, certainly?

Thanks for asking. Might I be so bold as to ask what 'cozen' signifies, in return?

But of course.

In a novel, to my discredit having forgotten which one, though I'll guess "Tristram Shandy", I came across the word "cozenage". This happened a good 25 years ago. "Wtf?", thought I, reaching for a dictionary. Turns out the word has to do with being a trickster. As a verb: "cozen", to cheat or trick (someone).

Having experienced the "Internet" since the days of arpanet and fantastically low baud rate university bulletin boards, (via Apple 2E's and such -- anyone recall Michigan Terminal System?) I've long felt the computer interface allowed an incidental trick inherent in the the communications technology, whereby the user/poster/me/you could somewhat safely pose as anyone. Without the tremendous information we humans glean from body language and timbre of voice, we can be fooled, or fool others. Thus, a system enabling trickery.

Hardly an unexamined viewpoint, but it resonates purely with me.

So, "cozen" sums it up nicely in my brainpan.

Also, kinda helps that it's a unique tag.

Well, taking an alternate assignation for 'v/r' and 'r' (specifically, 'virtual reality' and 'reality'), I can categorically state you've never worked at the Pentagon, else you'd have never made such a reckless and irresponsible claim.

Seriously though, I never ran across an instance of 'r' being used as a closing. Were you being serious? I seldom used the full, 'Very Respectfully', unless I'd been a very bad boy, indeed, because it sounds (more than) a little obsequious. So, it was generally 'Respectfully' in letters, or 'v/r' in notes.

But, I wish I could have signed my military correspondence a bit more inventively, as I frequently do here at FFFn...

Yet another reason to be thankful for being ATC, and more or less completely outside the food chain. If any young people are considering an enlisted career in the military, but who value their individuality, I highly recommend ATC as a means of achieving both goals.

I've seen bumper stickers, et cetera, stating, "Air traffic controllers tell pilots where to go." While I disagree with the sentiment on principle, there is nonetheless a kernel of truth to it. When you are a fully-rated controller and signed on to a position (especially Local Control and/or Watch Supervisor), there is very little the outside world can do to countermand your control instructions.

I have seen a Colonel removed from a tower cab under armed escort (weapons holstered, but he was steaming) because he attempted to direct traffic flow while acting as Supervisor of Flying. My Watch Sup, a Staff Sergeant -- after a protracted and increasingly heated war of words -- told the Colonel, "Fine, you've got it!" (meaning control of the work environment) and left the building. Unfortunately, this left me (an A1C at the time) in the tower, singlehanded, working a recovery of A-10's while the Colonel made raving phone calls from his perch in the back of the tower. About 10 minutes later, the SPs came, collected the Colonel, and my Supervisor returned, took a briefing and we finished the shift without further incident. (NB: I was scared sh!tless by the power struggle. I never saw anything like it for the remainder of my USAF career.)

The Colonel was shipped home to the US before the ink was dry on the paperwork.

Point is, aspiring controllers, when you are in a position of responsibility for the lives of your aviating customers, you are the sole designer, evaluator and executor of The Plan. That's a great feeling, if you're well-suited to that kind of responsibility. And because of rest requirements and having one's concentrative state protected from the normal 'mind-games' of the USAF, you can pretty much go through your military service untouched by the chain of command. Y'all know what that is, right?

All it takes is some four-dimensional forecasting (horizontal, vertical, lateral and time separations), a variable speech rate, good enunciation and a good memory for details. If you are blind, you can still work in a radar facility.

One need not be a genius.

If you stay in for a single hitch -- maybe two -- you can get out prior to the FAA's 31-year old age limitation and go to work making in excess of $70K to start, full bennies and retirement. If you make a career of the USAF, USA, or USN/MC as an ATC, you can get your retirement and then go to work in the Federal Contract Tower program, earning about $50K per annum.

It's a great career that provides better-than-average rewards for those who can hack it. You can now go to some colleges and take a degree in ATC. This program is ~5 years old, sponsored by the FAA, and appears to be the wave of the future. But, I'm still an old-school, 'serve your country' kind of guy, so I say get some real experience pumping jets at Holloman, Eglin, Luke, Nellis, etc. before kicking off your shoes for a long nap in the FAA.

There ain't nothing more fun in a Class C or D airspace than 26 turbojet fighters screaming around a 5 mile radius at 250 knots. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be a pilot under those circumstances, knowing there's some NCO with a God-complex calling all the shots, heh-heh...

I know this is probably as boring as church for a lot of folks; but here's one more quick, fond memory: Standing on the catwalk at Holloman AFB, Fridays around noon with the Class D closed to all other traffic, and watching the F-15 demonstration flight from the best vantage point in the house. It'll make all the hair on your body stand on end. You ain't gonna get that regular thrill anyplace other than in military service ATC. Except maybe in the Serenity sequels.

Simple, invokes Serenity (the first film), and the KEEP part implies this isn't some new movie but a continuation/sequel, ie they're still flying.

I had a good idea. What if they just had Serenity as the title, but changed the logo for each movie?
For example, the next movie could deal more with the Blue Handed Men, and the logo, instead of being predominantly gold, could be blue. Then for the next film, the logo could be predominantly red. I haven't seen the BDM yet, so maybe it wouldn't work in the plot, but you could just have the color represent something within the film. And then people could refer to it as Serenity Gold, Serenity Blue, and Serenity Red.

...or something.
