'Saint' Jayne? But what about all the hats?

Don't know if anyone's brought this up before, so here goes.

In one of the commentaries (can't remember which), Joss says that only bad guys wear hats in the Firefly 'Verse. Interestingly, one of our BDHs does just that.

Off the top of my head, I can think of several instances where Jayne appears in a hat: in "The Train Job" he wears that hat/hood thing while going onto the train, in "Safe" while herding the cattle out of Serenity's hold, in "Jaynestown" he wears the hat/hood thing again going into Canton, in "Ariel" while posing as a medic, in "The Message" he gets (and wears) the hat his mother made, in "Heart of Gold" while going to the whorehouse. There may be others, but I can't think of them at the moment (though it would make a great excuse to watch the series again).

So...given Joss' propensity for killing off/betraying major characters, were Jayne's hats Joss' way of foreshadowing Jayne's eventual betrayal of the Tams?

America loves a winner!

I'd really, REALLY not like it. But seeing how Joss is obsessed w/ death, it only makes sense.

Yeah - reckon you hit the nail on the proverbial ... always have thought this:

The hat wearing of Mr Cobb signifies his ambiguous poisition on the line between good and EVIL ....

I would really not like it either, but that's because of the 14 bits of Jayne we see in the episodes he seems to be OK, on the whole. But who knows what Joss would have done with a whole season, let alone more? The very fact that he sleeps through Early's assault on Serenity shows how little River trusts him, and she's got an uncanny knack for assessing folk.

I wouldn't read too much into the hat thing.

In Ariel, Mal, Zoe and Wash all wear hats, it's part of their disguise/uniform. Wash wears his backwards, is a backward hat a good guy?

In Trash, Jayne and Kaylee wear very similar hoods and Zoe covers up with a hat-like scarf as they work on the garbage drone.

In Jaynestown, Jayne must change his identity. How else could he obscure his face?

In The Message, Jayne's hat is a gift from his mother, who we discover he sends money to. Doesn't sound like a very bad guy to me. A bad guy his mother could love?

To paraphrase Freud, "Sometimes a hat is only a hat. . ."

Jayne questions authority, and he joined the crew for money. Given Mal's history of inspiring loyalty in subordinates, I prefer to think that over time, Jayne would adopt Mal's values. If he did that instantly, there would be no opportunity for us to see his character grow.

And he does join the rescue effort in War Games, even though there's no payoff in it for him.

Sadly, we never got the time to find out.

Maybe Jayne will go bad in one of the sequels. I wouldn't put it past Joss...

yeah see jayne is still kind of a bad guy cuz even in the series he sells out river & the reason we see Mal, Zoe and Wash were hats in only one episode is maybe because they were bad in there past and Joss was just trying to point that out a bit.

...And let's not forget Mal's pretty floral bonnet. Does that make him a bad girl?

I think the problem here is that we've gotten so used to having Jayne around (after 2 years of the DVD) that one can hardly stomach the thought of Jayne going bad. But honestly--Joss always kills someone off or has someone betray someone else. To me, the logical choice is Jayne.

And let's not forget. Most instances of the BDHs wearing hats is for disguise purposes (like in Ariel), whereas Jayne chooses to do so.

X__X Let's not talk of the death thing..I forgot that it could and WILL happen in this verse. I felt safe and happy with this show...now I'm not... lol.

I damn well hope Jayne won't die. I couldn't care less if he turns bad, but in some aspects, he already is bad...a bad boy!

Hmm...I just might have to see it again seeing as how I never saw him as such. Hell, I STILL don't think Spike's bad. It's just all an act to me. lol
