To the Great Mother, who's got the ultimate say in matters.

To Lord Hermes, the man in charge of television.

To St. Jude, Patron of Lost Causes, and St. Claire, the Guardian of TV (Yes, you two, I know I'm not Catholic, but i understand your departments)

You all know I'm in there for the lost causes. This one's pretty minor as far as those are concerned, but I don't dare ask for the big ones - I know better.

In-laws with cancer, a war on the horizon, politicians who don't give a rat's ass about anything but their paychecks. Civil rights are being flushed, the jackboots are getting shined, and my friends are wondering if I'm going to die in the next five years for trying to take up arms for more than a few of those lost causes.

Look, I've been praying for global peace every gorram birthday since age 7. I know that's not feasable, even for you.

What I am hoping is feasable? I need faith. I need a sign that sometimes the odds get beaten, that hope is not something silly. Something with which I can feel inspired to grab my sign, write my congress, and tell tales that others might see and feel a little of that for themselves.

Damn it, Mom. I need a story.

This fellow nanmed Joss down in California's put together a dandy story. Has everything I'd ever wanted. And now it's all going to be taken away for some police brutality, meaningless sex, or more of the "let's bomb the world" sloganeering.

Honestly, Mom...I'm running out of hope. I've seen my family fall apart, my in-laws getting cancer, my job's not that stable, and it looks like it's only going to get worse for politics.

It's minor, but I don't dare ask for help on the big hopeless causes. I'll be out there with you fighting them, but I need a sign - some sign - that these fights are worth it.

In the meantime, I've put one white candle on my altar for the fans - who hold the light despite it all. And I've got a lantern in front of the TV, keeping the light on for a ship named Serenity.

Please, Mom...can I get a bedtime story?

MARK

I don't like religion, as a rule, but I'm offering up a little something to St. Barbera - Patron Saint (Or should that be Matron?) of Rocket Men.

Babs... Have a heart and lend Mal and Co. a hand huh? How are they less worthy than Andromeda?

Twelve spheres of unendurable brightness spalled the velvety blackness of space.
The silence on Lester Tourville's flag bridge was absolute
And then the spell was broken as Shannon Foraker looked up from her console from where she had just sent a seemingly innocent command to the main computers of State Security's finest Superdreadnoughts.
"Oops." She said.
