Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the first printing & second printing of Serenity #1?

I think first printings don't indicate they're the first printing. Second and beyond should say somewhere (usually in the small print which in SERENITY is at the bottom of the inside front cover) that they are subsequent printings.

See, I've looked inside the front cover of the two copies of the Mal cover for issue #1 that I got from 258 West Authentic, and I can't spot any difference.

I ordered:

#1 (first printing) all three covers

#2 all three covers (presumably these are first printings)

#3 all three covers (hopefully these will be first printings)

#s 1-3 (to read)

Does anyone have a first and second printing of #1 for comparison?

To tell you the truth I'm starting to have doubts myself. This used to be so clear-cut. A second printing used to say so and it was easy to find. The examples I'm thinking are from quite a while ago though. For instance I remember seeing the designation of a 2nd printing on THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS (not a compliation either--those are clearly marked originally printed in....). Maybe comics companies have found some way around this.

Anyway, the folks at my comics store seem to be a pretty knowledgable bunch. I'll ask them.

I'm hoping that if I keep bumping this thread, Marco might come in here and clarify things.

The guy who operates 258 West Authentic, where I bought my copies of the comic. He's around here, somewhere.

Gotchya. Why not start a thread called "Hey Marco, I need your help!" or something like that?

How would that be stealthy?

It would definitely register low on the stealthometer, but you might get an answer faster. Unless you're cleverly setting a trap in which an unsuspecting Marco posts on your thread not knowing to whom he has given the answer to the riddle of the 2nd printing.

Well, first off, 2nd prints havnt been shipped yet, to my knowlage. I think they start shipping next week. Also if you look on the back page of the cover of the Issue #1 it will say Printed July 2005 - Where 2nd prints will say Aug 2005. So far no one knows if there will be a 2nd print of the Issue #2 or #3. ( unlike the first issue most retailers wised up'd and ordered more copies of the 2nd and 3rd issue before they were printed ).

Once I get a 2nd print in my hands I will post the major diffrances right away.

I've been curious about this too, as I looked at the "second printing" and couldn't find any difference between the two, so I e-mailed Dark Horse and asked them. I don't like the answer because it smells more than a little fishy, but here it is with my original e-mail for context.

Hi *****,

Thanks for your e mail. Here's the official answer: the presses never
actually stopped when we re-ordered Serenity #1 (they were still
printing the original order when we reordered) - so technically all
Serenity #1's are considered first printings. Sorry about the
confusion.

Take Care,

Matt P.

Yeah, it makes no sense to me considering that the continuation printing or whatever they're calling it didn't come out till a month plus after the first one, which I wouldn't think would be the case if they were still printing. I'm just happy to have all the covers for my collection, but it does pretty much screw eveybody over who made an effort to get it when it first came out.
