Ok guys, be prepared for some rip-out-your-heart emotions here.....These are pictures of a little min pin girl found in a trash can in Ohio, who is now safely in rescue.....and her name is River. Yes, it was inspired by OUR River.....I'll post the story below:

]

From the Ohio rescuer, Audra:
"Here's a bit more of her story: The garbage collectors that found River in the dumpster also found what we can only assume was her littermate. He was put down at the shelter for aggression:( When I picked River up, I met the guy that was running the shelter because Scott and Vicki talked that guy into taking her home so I could have enough time to get there to get her. He and his family had been out shopping, and River was in the back of their mini-SUV in a tiny cardboard box with the lid closed. She must have been out there for a while, as she was totally swimming in vomit and feces. She was so sick that first night (most likely because they had fed her at least a 16 oz. can of dog food). When I got her home and was holding her little shivering body, I couldn't believe her condition. Not only was she the skinniest thing I had ever seen, but she had sores on her neck. I just wrapped a potty pad around her behind (she was really sick, let's just leave it at that), and then I wrapped towels around her and held her. She was so cold and afraid, it just made me so sad and disgusted. I always seem to think well that's the worst thing I will ever seen, and it seems like then I always turn around and see something worse. What is the matter with people?

Anyway, River was at the vet's office today and weighed in a whopping 3.5 lbs (note: this is after 3 days and 4 nights of eating a little less than 1/4 cup of food every 2 hours). These pictures were also taken today. She was too cold and scared and sick for me to get pictures of her when she first came in. We found out today that River has some intestinal parasites, but she can only get very small doses of wormer right now, so it will be about 1 month before she will be totally worm free The vet says it will be a month before she will even think about giving River her shots, and it will be more than 2 months before she will even begin to think about scheduling a spay. So, it seems like this little girl is in for the long haul, but I know she will make it. You can't believe how active and curious this little girl is. She just constantly runs around, nosing around. She jumps on and off furniture and even the bed with no help. She can even climb baby gates! "

When I wrote back saying what a sweetie she seemed to be, and that it was a good thing I wasn't going back to Ohio soon, or she'd find her way into my pocket for a trip south, I asked if her name was from Serenity...here's what I found out!

"Sue,

You got me! Her name is from Serenity. I am a big Firefly fan, and I figured it made sense. The Alliance did terrible things to River, but she escaped and the people on Serenity took care of her. Also, you get the idea from the show that Simon and River's parents sold River to the Alliance, knowing what would be done to her (I figured our River also had a lot of bad parenting).

Audra "

I was so happy to see another Browncoat among our volunteers!!! I wrote back to the list, explaining a little about what the heck we were raving about, put a link to the movie site and to my store. Sure enough, Audra and I are now having Firefly discussions, she's getting one of my shirts, and the word of Firefly and Serenity has spread a little further, thanks to a small, abused dog who had too much in common with a tortured girl we all love.

I forgot to ask if she can kill you with her brain.....

I don't think River will be up for adoption for some time, so she's not on the site yet (I don't think), but you can see lots of other cuties, and donate to help her, if you're so inclined, by going to http://www.minpinrescue.org
