HDDVD/BLU-RAY no phone line for movies BUT movies and players will be embedded with upgradable encryption. Computer HDDVD/BLU-RAY will need internet upgrade on encryption keys once every six months.

So if you have a US model player in Europe you will be able to import US discs and if you have a European model player in North America you should be able to import European discs. Most likely two dedicated players required.

The new system of anti-piracy is embedded in both the disc and the player. Part of the key is in the player and part of the key is on the disc. The key is unique to every player. So cheapo grey market players based upon a single cloned key could face universal shut-down. So stick with reputable brands.

There is a strong danger that a pirate disc could cause a branded player to shut-down.

The article by Barry Fox in HiFiNEWS made no mention of REGION CODING.

The system could be the basis for unknown things to come.

REVISION: One of the things to keep in mind is that every disc will contain a fresh set of codes in its key so everytime you put a new disc in your player your player's key codings is altered and upgraded. Thus no hack device can keep up.

Well, upgradeable security measures are held up to be necessary nowadays. However hackers are just so damn persistent and smart...

I can handle the encryption thing with BluRay...what pisses me off is this gorram sneaky evil 'anit-pirate' root kit on the freakin SonyBMG CDs.

That's evil. That's wrong. That deserves an ass whooping. Sorry, I'm a bit pissed about the thought of buying a CD, ripping it to my computer so I can damn well play it when i want and where I want and then finding out my CD drive no longer works.

Sorry, a bit off topic, but I just had to rant about it.
