Ive yet to watch any episodes of Firefly (im in Australia) and as it seems that its actually been shut down I want to download and watch the episodes...

I know that Serenity was supposed to be the pilot but it was aird as episode 11-12..so should I watch that first, then watch Bushwacked. Or should I get the unaired pilot then start from the beginning?...or just watch it as it was aired?

oh and bad FOX...grrrr

I would definitely watch Serenity first, and then in the order they were aired.
Train Job
Bushwacked
Our Mrs Reynolds
Jaynestown
Out of Gas
Shindig
Safe
Ariel
War Stories
Objects in Space

I watched them with Serenity at the end - I think it suffers a little because for much of it your reaction might be "yeah, I know all this". Still good tv though ;)

Serenity IS what was described as 'the unaired pilot'. They popped it back for some reason that I still don't understand, and aired The Train Job first.
Fox then aired Serenity in December - out of order - so some scenes feel a little repetitive. It is still very enjoyable, although I think it would be even more so if you saw it first as Joss and Co intended.

Serenity is not the only episode Fox showed out of order. "Shindig" and "Safe" were supposed to air before "Our Mrs. Reynolds". The crew relationships make more sense that way. There's an episode guide on the left side of the home page for fireflyfans.net.

I agree with Radegund. Definitely watch them in the true order, NOT the aired order. Start with Serenity and go from there. That way you can really watch the relationship between the characters develop because these relationships are the beauty of this series.

HJERMSTED

What Fox did to Firefly is akin to putting Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (or Beatles' Sgt. Pepper) in your CD player and hitting the random play button: Still great songs, but the artists' intent is thwarted/ignored completely.

This is the order Mutant Enemy and Whedon intended the episodes to be seen in:

1. Serenity pt 1
2. Serenity pt 2
3. The Train Job
4. Bushwacked
5. Shindig
6. Safe
7. Our Mrs. Reynolds
8. Jaynestown
9. Out of Gas
10. Ariel
11. War Stories
12. Heart of Gold (unaired)
13. Objects In Space
14. Trash (unaired)
15. The Message (unaired)

Early episodes had too much western in them for Fox, so the network shuffled the order around. The order Fox aired them in always seemed patchy to me. When I finally watched the eps in the above sequence, the overall character arcs flowed much better. (I am very interested in learning how 'Heart of Gold' fits in to the mix being the first episode intended after 'War Stories'.)

Give it a try!

That just kills me, the fact that these eps were shown out of order. And I think it was intentional.

But definitely watch Serenity first. It was RUINED for the rest of us because we already knew alot of what was supposed to be mysterious and then something terrible happens but we already knew that it would turn out ok.... it was awful!! How wonderful it would have been to see that pilot cold and not know what was going to happen. We all missed out on the emotional roller coaster ride, but you don't have to!

Watching the episodes in the order in which they where intended is the only way to go. There is a lot of subtlety in the character development and relationships that is completely lost when you watch the episodes in the as aired order.

The as aired order I would give a 7/10 Rating.
The correct order I would give a 10/10 Rating.
