Somebody who's good at judging speed by sight, look at a scene of Serenity going at full burn and try to figure out how fast she's going.

Early: You ever been raped, Kaylee?
Kaylee: You know, it's funny you should mention that... ever heard of the Fox network?

When Serenity is in space, we hear fiddles instead of engines. No sound in space.

Well, I know a lot about fiddles. I'm something of a folk musician, and I can tell you that judging by the speed of the fiddlers, they were going pretty fast.

Has YOUR mom seen Firefly, lately?

LOL
Seriously, though, there's a few scenes where the ship is at full burn with a fixed object onscreen for comparison.

I don't think they ever got into that, fast enough to travel between planets. But not so fast that it doesn't take awhile. They never seemed to need more than a couple days to get anywhere. I think Tim and Joss kept the tech intentionally vague to annoy people with questions like this.

Keep Flying!

I'm doing some specs for a physics model for a sci-fi RPG right now. From all the physicists I've talked to and my general knowledge of the subject, firefly is just science-fiction. There is no rhyme or reason to the speed or such... it's just a good story.

Thank god it doesn't go the Star Trek route where they actually try to explain how they do these things and their explanations are so poor they hurt my brain.

"Captain! If we adjust the photon emissions to align with the neutron particles in your ass, we just might be able to get the gerbil! I need 30 minutes!"
