Sometime last year I heard that three original textual novels based on the Firefly franchise were coming out.

Are they still?

Yep, we are all STARVING for new material. Thus I have begun to read fanfic like a maniac. BUT.... it'll be awhile I think.

Maybe this summer? I've not read anything official.

That's the way I understand it. KRAD who wrote the novelization of the movie posts here and he's said that there are some in the works, both by him and by some other author(s). They have to be approved by Joss then I guess we'll get them.

I can't wait either. But mostly I'm praying and hoping for a sequel or for the series to be picked up again. Oh, I hope, I hope.....

In the meantime, there are some really good fanfics here. I'm particularly partial to Jetflair's work. She's written one about Mal and Zoe pre-Serenity, post-war that is excellent.

You might try some of 'em to tide you over.

I do love the fanfics...

They kind of elaborate on the already rich tapestry of the Firefly verse; tales of Inara with favoured clients, flashbacks of Saffron's past life, and of course the jobs!

Congratulations, now I can't concentrate on anything but the chance for new stories and I've gotta go lecture to my class while I'm being evaluated by my boss. Next time please have the courtosey to post exciting news like this after working hours.

Hmm... novels based off od TV shows always scare me. I have not read a great deal of them, but it has been my experience that they just aren't as good as original novels. Most I have read some across as flat. I have not read the Buffy novels -- has anyone? Where they any good? I assume Firefly novels would be at a similiar quality.

Fanfiction is a guilty pleasure of mine. Most of it is crap, but it is fun crap. And when it is good, it knocks you socks off. I started to write a firefly fic, got over 10,000 words into it, too, but I haven't been keeping up with it. Also, I'm looking for a beta reader. Well, we'll see how that goes.

Peace.

I believe the titles of these novels were made public knowledge.

Anybody know what they're called?

So I guess there will be three of them.

A quote from Steve Burst's blog at whedoneque: "As of this afternoon, the first draft of the Firefly novel (tentatively titled: My Own Kind of Freedom) is finished. This one is going to take a lot of revision, as I was (as usual) making it up as I went, and now that I know what happens, it's got to be set up right. But I'm pleased with having finished, and pleased with the book."

The only original novels I've ever read that were based on another entertainment format's verse were the Star Wars books. A lot of those are great.... and some of them, ehhhhh not so much.

I think it depends on getting the best authors. Aaron Allston could do wonders in this universe. He's great at coming up with characters, respecting characters that are already created, and fleshing out characters that have been vaguely introduced (curse you Book!).

Plus, if anyone's read the later half of the X-wing series, you know he's awesome at the half-tilt humor and crazy, complicated jobs that we all know and love.

Other authors to consider: Timothy Zahn (who's great at writing action and would bring in a lot of new fans) and Micheal Stackpole (who's not as great as Timothy Zahn, nor as funny as Allston, but still pretty good in the Sci-fi genre).

The last thing I saw from KRAD about this, over on the Browncoats boards, is that we probably shouldn't expect any of these until 2007.
