Wow, is this just a fluke? Firefly on DVD is now outselling Serenity in Amazon's top DVDs. Is this a "second wave" phenomenon, of people who first saw Serenity on DVD loving it and getting the series? Or maybe a push from SciFi or on demand showings? Cool, regardless. Come on in, new browncoats!

We are experiencing the evoution of a revolution.

The reinforcements are coming...many of them have already found their way here.

We were a collection of soldiers holding fast to a dream...and now we are Legion.

Fight on my beloved Browncoats!!!

We will hold...we hold till Mal gets back.

I'd say it's definitely the second wave phenomenon, probably coupled with word of mouth recommendations. There was enough mystery in the movie that I bet a lot of people who watched it got the series so they could fill in the blanks.

And it's not just Amazon. I went to Target to get the series last weekend, and they were out. They said that they'd be getting a new shipment on Wednesday, so I went in on Thursday, and there was only one left!

With any luck, the sales will be through the roof, and we'll get another installment in some form or other.

Makes me wonder: exactly what the results of all this crazyness is going to be.

I ran into it myself when I went to go buy Serenity, the salesguy said they can't keep Firefly in and I got their last copy of Serenity. Their next shipment wasn't due in for another week or so.

Does this mean that they're reprinting the DVDs to keep up with demand?

I've seen this before. For a long long while I was a member of a Star Wars online RPG that saw membership boost once interest in the three new movies spiked. Once it died down, it was a wasteland except for die-hard fans. (Think bell curve)

I think the real tell will be in the next two months. If the videos can hold their own for another 8 weeks, I think some people are really going to sit up and notice. You have to think, Serenity was released back in December, and lots were given as holiday gifts. Give a month's grace for it to sink in, then a rush to buy Firefly once they finally get a chance to watch the special features. Then another month's grace for them to finish watching Firefly and those special features.

Two months. Then there'll a big push for a rush on novels and word of a new movie/series continuation. Possibly even an extension on the RPG or more comics, all just in time for summer and the blockbuster movie rush, where everyone's craving entertainment for their summer vacations.

Am I way out in the black thinking this way? To me, it makes perfect sense...

Here's hoping...maybe more showings and better ratings on SciFi channel, international release of the movie boosting interest, Nathan's new projects and the buzz about Wonder Woman and even Morena as a casting choice...my fiance, who looks into these kind of things, said something like 60% of people see a movie for the first time when the buy it on DVD. It's not that DVDs are just for people who already know and love the product and want to collect it, a lot of people think it's worth the expense to just buy a DVD sight unseen on the chance that they'll like it. So, the fact that Firefly and Serenity are not readily accessible in other sources may not matter so much.
