Both Mal and Caleb do talk with a certain accent, but I see those accents as altogether different.

Mal had a more western-countrified dialect, whereas Caleb has a more southern-countrified dialect.

It's a subtle difference.

Southern accents can vary depending on the place of origin--state to state, rural vs. urban. Caleb's sounds much more pronounced, as it should be seeing as he's the Southern preacher stereotype. Mal's is polished somewhat, reflecting how he has lived off Shadow for some time.
