At the beginning of the BDM, Mal is at the same place that we see him in the tv show: lost, living day to day, etc.

An example of his disconnection is the fact that he kicks that guy off the mule after the bank heist, leaving him for dead.

But as the movie progresses, he starts to change, and by the end of the flick, he seems to have found a purpose for living. He's found faith.

So here's my question: if Mal were to encounter a similar situation as the one at the beginning of the movie, would he react differently?

I really don't see Mal ever being the "we can save everyone" type of guy. He is just too much of a realist for that. Yes, it's true he found something to believe in, that doesn't mean he will always do what is morally right. He is always going to place himself and his crew above everyone else. Therefore I think he would react exactly the same way he did in the BDM.

I know some people will say he risked his entire crew to get the message out regarding Miranda but that was an extreme circumstance.
