What would have the BDH's been on Earth that Was?

I was thinking early this evening. If our BDH's were here with us what would they be doing?

My first thought was that Mal,Zoe and Jayne would have fit right in with a group like Blackwater Security or some company that could have used their talents but there were a few wrenches in the works.

First, I couldn't fit any one else in. Mal and Zoe most likely wouldn't like working for someone else, even if it is semi military and Jayne couldn't have passed the background check.

The best thing I could come up with was Mal, Zoe, Wash and Jayne flying around some backwater third world dictatorship on a banged up cargo plane flying in and out of potholed dirt airstrips.

Simon would be some hotshot young surgeon that rescued his genius, mentally ill sister from an insitituion that their wealthy parents had forced her into. He treats villagers on the side.

Book would be a missionary "spreading the Word to them that need it" in the countries that the cargo plane named Serenity flies in and out of.

My biggest problem was Inara. A cargo plane usually doesn't carry the equivalent of a Companion to out of the way places. So she is a model that left everything just as she was reaching the peak of her profession and now runs the best gorram French restaurant in the smallest former French colony in SouthEast Asia.

What would your scenario be for this AU here on Earth that Was?

They'd be drug smugglers, moving weed from Colombia and Mexico into the U.S.

They'd be 'independent' no doubt, running under the noses of the big drug kingpins, dealing directly with the local farmers. They'd be chased by both the cartels and the feds, 'cause they're special.

I see them as actors of a popular but canceled tv series, loved and adored by fans around the world

But really heres what I've come up with.

Mal Reynolds: Sports talkshow host with a drinking problem because what hes does is not the real him( and he secretly yearns for a beautiful aerobics instructor)

Simon: Brilliant government surgeon with security clearances so high he may have been allowed to view the actual footage of the 1947 alien autopsy.

Wash: Stunt pilot in the midwest somewhere.

Book: I don't see Book as a tv evangelist but I do see him presenting the word of the Lord somewhere.

Inara: tv aerobics instructor/host( with the hots for a certain tv sports personality)

Kaylee: tv commercials.I'd buy "DEPENDS" from this girl even though I don't need them.

Zoey: Working in law enforcement.

Jayne: Seen being arrested by Zoe on the tv show "Cops".

River: Tucked away in some government hiding place being tested by the powers that be for a new world order. Hey that kinda things going on right now gorramit.

PS: Simon has been told that River was lost in a plane crash in the Alps on her way to a skiing vacation, and he believes it this time even though he has dreams with dead aliens saying... " They're hurting us. Get us out"

Well, there actually are people a little like Mal & Co. in real life... especially if you take out the "wanted fugitive" element of the Tams.

There is still a "tramp steamer" lifestyle alive and well in the Caribbean (and perhaps elsewhere). These people operate small oceangoing freighters, usually in less than pristine condition. They earn their living by buying a cargo on one island, making an educated guess about what it will be worth on some other island. They then sail there and sell the cargo, hopefully at a profit. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Like Serenity, they will sometimes take on passengers, as long as the latter are willing to accept less than luxury accomodations and some risk that they may never get where they wanted to go.

Most of these are small, often family-run businesses, often just a skipper and a few hands. Typically they are legitimate and above board, though I'd guess they might skirt into legal gray areas on occasion.

It's my guess that this is exactly how Mal and Zoe were getting along before River showed up and caused some... complications.
