Can't Stop the Whedonverse: We Aim to Support Libraries

The Whedonverse Multimedia Project supports Joss Whedon creations all year round, but June 23rd is special because it's Whedon's birthday. This year the day is extra special because Browncoats have organized two separate campaigns to wish him happy birthday by showing their admiration for his film Serenity. The Project would like to help with the celebration.

Two Browncoat campaigns are organizing something special for Joss Whedon's birthday: "Serenity Now" at cantstoptheserenity.com and "Serenity Day" at serenityday.org.

"Serenity Now" is organizing charity screening of the film Serenity to benefit Equality Now. The screening are currently set up in over 29 cities in 5 countries on 3 continents and continues to expand to other locations. Equality Now is Joss Whedon's favorite charity. It works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure. It is a wonderful cause and we at the Whedonverse Multimedia Project are extremely impressed by the hard work fans have put into this effort. Kudos to everyone involved. The Project proudly displays a banner advertising the campaign.

"Serenity Day" is organizing fans to participate in a mass purchase of Serenity to demonstrate their desire to see a continuation of that universe.

The Whedonverse Multimedia Project has been purchasing Whedon DVDs for nearly two years now and would like to assist fans participating in the Serenity Day campaign.

If you're planning on buying a DVD on "Serenity Day" and need to know what to do with that extra copy of Serenity (assuming you already have a copy for yourself), the Project has three suggestions.

1. Donate to Public Libraries

* Contact your local public library and ask about their donation policy. If they accept donations of DVDs, send them a copy of Serenity. Please list your donation in our online tally.

* Donate to the Whedonverse Multimedia Project and we will use your financial contribution to purchase DVDs for the libraries on our waiting list. Several of the libraries that we donated DVDs to prior to Serenity being released still need a copy for their collection. Please mention "Serenity Day - DVDs" with your donation.

If buying a copy of Serenity on DVD is a bit out of your price range, books such as "Finding Serenity" make excellent gifts to libraries as well.

2. Send Care Packages to the Troops

The troops need things to keep them occupied during their downtime between performing their duties. Gifts from home really boost morale. So, consider sending them a care package containing a letter from you and a Serenity DVD or book.

* Visit AnySoldier.com to find a soldier that is requesting DVDs for his or her unit to watch. The site provides mailing addresses and suggestions on what to include in your letter. Something as simple as a picture of your pet with a story about something cute they've done could really lift someone's spirits.

* Donate to the Whedonverse Multimedia Project and we will use your financial contribution to purchase DVDs to send in care packages to the troops. Please mention "Serenity Day - Support the Troops" with your donation.

3. Support the Comics Outreach Program

Ok, so this doesn't involve DVDs, but the Project believes that sending comic books in addition to regular books and DVDs to public libraries and other charitable organizations is also an important way to support the `verse.

The Comics Outreach Program is sponsored by the International Comic Arts Association. The organization distributes comic books through a wide variety of outlets and organizations to readers of all ages, including adults. The ICAA screens all of the books that they pass on to make sure all are age-appropriate to the group or organization that receives them. They accept trade paperback editions of comics in addition to individual comics.

* Send Serenity comics to:

The International Comic Arts Association
Comics Outreach Program
533 Johnson Avenue
Morris, IL 60450

* Donate to the Whedonverse Multimedia Project and we will use your financial contribution to purchase comic books to send to the Comics Outreach Program. Please mention "Serenity Day - Comics Outreach Program" with your donation.

What about the rest of the `verse?

Now, just because Browncoats are organizing to support Serenity on Joss Whedon's birthday doesn't mean that fans of Buffy and Angel can't join in the celebration as well. After all, we're called the Whedonverse Multimedia Project – we support all of his creations.

All the suggestions above apply to Buffy and Angel fans as well – simply donate Buffy or Angel related DVDs, books or comics.

About the Project

The goal of the Whedonverse Multimedia Project is simple: bring the Joss Whedon created worlds of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Serenity to those who may not have yet discovered them.

The Project is not affiliated with either the "Serenity Now" or the "Serenity Day" campaigns. We respect the achievements of the Browncoats and hope we can assist them in their efforts to share the `verse with a new audience.

If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact us.
