Note: this thread contains many pictures, to help tell the story, as mere words probably won't do it justice.

As I've said before, I've had a few surreal moments in my career as a CFS member. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_Fire_Service and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_Country_Fire_Service for more details about what we are and what we do)

My top 3 incidents are as follows:

#3: The Ice Van.
This one's fairly self explanatory.

#2: Exercise Edge.
As a research project co-run by our training officer and some engineers at one of the local universities, we had a fully restored bus tipped off a cliff in a quarry to see what happens to the bus, and if wearing a seatbelt would make any different. We also invited all the local emergency services (firefighters, state emergency service, police, ambulances) along to run a mock rescue, to see who we'd do it if it were to happen for real.

#1: The Chocolate Sauce job.
Typically, any trucks packed with dangerous goods in Australia need to be marked with warning labels that state what's being transported, but this is often circumvented by carrying mixed shipments, thus only needed a 'mixed goods' label.

When a truck with one of these labels was in an accident, it was found to be leaking a dark brown, viscous substance. As there are many dangerous things that match that description, standard procedure was followed, which involved chemical resistant splash suits, breathing apparatus and the like. It was only after 4 or 5 hours of having the interstate highway blocked off that it was eventually determined to be, yup, chocolate topping for use on icecream.

All in all, it was a very wierd day, which included some of us driving a forklift along the freeway.

And for those who are curious, we go to an average of one cat up a tree each year.

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)

I love these photos Nico! What a hero... just wanted to know - did the seatbelts work? I guess they did since you're still here to tell the tale!

Love your work! Magda x x x

Nope. All the crash-test dummies (both with and without seatbelts) 'died' in horrible ways.

Can't say as we did. If you look at the news coverage of it (possibly on the ubiquitous YouTube), there's a moment where two guys walk through the background of a reporter's spiel, dragging the leg-less body of the 'driver' away (and he was one of the ones that had been wearing a seatbelt).
