RABBAN

I've been thinking of getting an Air Creation Clipper ultralight to fly.. Thing is after so many combat landings into Bahgdad and Afgan I don't really like flying. I don't know why I have this bug but The though of my own ship really appeals to me.

Tell me I'm crazy.. It won't stop the voices but at least they'll have someone to talk to.

OUT2THEBLACK

Hate to rain on anyone's dream of flight , Rabban , but of all the various types of air machines I've flown , I like the ultralights the very least . I soloed 29 years ago this year , and have flown gliders and most of the popular fixed-wing light aircraft plus a couple of rotorcraft . The helos are real dream-machines , they will bend your mind if they do not break your bank . All of the light standard-category planes are fun . But if you want to be a real flyer and develop some mad Wash-y 'leaf-on-the-wind' soaring skills , at least go and get trained through solo proficiency in gliders . You wanna know what a lot of current and former astronauts prefer to fly for fun ? Yep , gliders . Check out the Soaring Society of America website for a lot of cool info about this profound and everlasting challenge . Even if your eventual desire is to fly a powered airplane , the glider skills will make you a substantially more-skilled-than-average airman . Especially if you ever want to fly a bushplane on the frontier , or anything like that . You know what that spinny fan-thing on the front of the airplane is for ? It's to keep the pilot cool ! If you don't believe it , just turn it off , and watch him start to sweat !

When Chuck Lindbergh's wife wanted to learn to fly , he sent her to the Bowlus glider school on a cliff in southern California . Because to those who are well-informed , ALL airplanes are gliders ; but some are much better than others !

There is a very new category of aircraft that are a step up from ultralights ; they are called ' light sport ' aircraft , and there's an easier experience in getting licensed . The training that you gain from them will also transfer to larger , heavier craft .

So, first priority , learn to glide ! If you still have a hankering for an engine , try a motorglider or the new light-sport category .

If you want to bust your tailfeathers and waste your coin , yeah , an ultralight should suffice for that !

Still Flyin' ! Browncoat AeroSpace Forces !
