Hmmm ... does anyone know the story as to why a second pilot was called for?

The only time I can recall a similar instance was with STAR TREK, "The Cage" was deemed to cerebral for a purported Action/Adventure show, but the network liked what they saw enough to want a second pilot, "Where No Man Had Gone Before." Hopefully, this is a good omen for Firefly.

Likes to mess with stuffs.

From what I understand, FOX was a bit nervous about showing the "original" pilot because it was a bit slower than they would have liked, which prompted them to consider berthing the series during midseason instead of the Fall.

To assure FOX execs that the series has got some serious umph to it, Joss Whedon and Tim Minear wrote a new pilot, which really isn't a new pilot at all, but another episode in the series that will air in the "original" pilot's place. It's rumored that the episode will be in the line of The Great Train Robbery.

The FOX execs ate it up. They loved it. It was good enough that during the final hours of determining Fox's Fall lineup, in nothing short of a coup, The Slayer's Firefly deposed The King of the World's Dark Angel and won Friday night's 8:00PM timeslot.

On a personal note, I would have liked to have seen Firefly in the X-File's old spot. It doesn't make much sense to put a science fiction series on Friday night when the majority of the target demographics are out of the house--myself included. But, hey, I'm tech savvy--there's always a solution to life's little annoyances.

I would have liked to see it snag the X-Files slot, too. But then when WB (bastards!)scheduled "Angel" for the same time, I thought it would be very unwise to pit 3 genre shows ("Alias" being the other) against one another. FOX decided that scheduling comedies in the 9pm hour as counterprogramming (everyone else has dramas on) was the better move.

I'm certain, assuming Firefly has legs, it'll be moved their within a couple of seasons (like "X-files" was) if Angel ends/moves.

I heard the original stunk and Joss was forced to fix it. Firefly was supposed to have X-files timeslot which woulda been good but the pilot was so bad they shelved the show. It was supposed to air at mid-season until Joss rewrote in. Unfortunately all the stuff I hear now about the new one isn't good either. :(

I'll try to watch the pilot but if it as bad as I hear I'll go out instead.

i'm a Dark Angel fan, and I take offense to that comment.

and Haken said this: "From what I understand, FOX was a bit nervous about showing the "original" pilot because it was a bit slower than they would have liked, which prompted them to consider berthing the series during midseason instead of the Fall."

No, the actual pilot sucked major ass and didn't deserve to air. And the way it looks now niether does the actual first ep.

Sorry, just being a little optimistic.

Well I do not know if the Pilot I saw was the first or second, but I liked it.

It was much better than any episode I ever saw of Dark Angel.

But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I think you guys will like it.
