Summary line has three parts; the Poll reported "Total votes in the poll", the fixed phrase "Votes Cast", then a "total votes for today".
Total votes in the poll - the integer provided by the site for the total votes in the poll since inception.
Total votes for today - the summation of the various shows "Today" votes. Internally fixed point, displayed as integer. Rounding will occur.

Yikes, I just got through voting and noticed the ewoks are gaining. Now they're cute and all but I'd rather they didn't get close enough to pat us on the ass.

If it really is Star Wars day, then that may explain the vote surge.

Okay, I figured it out.

The BBC News top stories in their RSS Feed include "Fans Mark 30 Years of Star Wars" which links to "Taking a walk on the Dark Side" which has a link to the BBC poll. Apparently, some Star Wars fans are reading the new article and following it to the poll. Thus the upsurge in votes.
