This statement I'm about to type is completely my opinion and I mean not to offend anyone:

I always felt that out of everyone on the ship that Shepard Book would have similar beliefs with the Alliance. Alliance is pure rationality while Reavers are pure passion (not madness). While the Alliance symbolizes Logic the reavers symbolize nature. The crew of the Firefly transport aren't reavers, but they set themselves in between reavers(nature) and the Alliance(logic). In my opinion Christianity is one of the few religions that goes against nature or desires of man such as :greed, lust, anger etc(which make up the reavers). The whole Christian thought is that the whole world can be categorized in black and white, good and evil. Both also belived that there should be a common ground of reasoning between eveyone or a 'national soul'.In christianity, its refered to as heaven and in the Alliance its their idea of the future.
Back in the midlle ages,in the Laten Christendom, there was a king of the Franks and his name was Charlemagne.Charlemagne was known to enforce Christianity upon other kingdoms or tribes.A Germanic barbarian tribe known as The Saxons had there own seperate religion (Norseman Mythology)and didn't appreciate how Charlemagne enforced his beliefs on them.So they go into a war. After many years of battle, Charlemagne and the Franks won and soon the Saxons became christians. My purpose of this example is to view the parallel between this exepert of history and the war between the Browncoats(Saxons) and the Alliance(The Franks).I'm not trying to say that Christianity is bad or evil, I'm trying to explain how Shepard Book could easily join in with the Alliance.
If you object , please comment
