Basically it just highlights the extent of poor journalism.

It may be me but most of the reviews you read these days are just the writer showing off with a quip or a rant. Seems to be all the trend these days to "have a rant'. This is no exception. The writer seems to be keen in taking a cheap shot more than it does about actually understanding the subject matter or presenting a genuine point.

I mean really, with a brief like "Most misleading movie titles". What value is there in that. It's pathetic!

And his argument about it being about camomile tea! Its hardly insightful is it. Just stating the bleeding obvious. No frankly I'm glad that the clowns who write for things like maxim find it too difficult to comprehend a great film like SERENITY and find it a struggle to get past the title.

Fact is it is a GREAT film and if simple yahoos at magazines get left behind then so much the better.

Well said and I completely agree. Did this so called "writer" watch the series? Did he or she watch Serenity? Somehow I highly doubt it, which further discredits the value of this "article".

LOL... I guess I never thought about it before, but the name Serenity is very Joss, isn't it? Like a vampire slayer named Buffy. A ship - a beatup workhorse of a ship - with a crew that, while not exactly "space pirates," certainly lives a life that is serene in no sense of the word. It's wishful thinking. It's a beautiful word, serenity, and it has a beautiful meaning, but for most people, it is an unattainable state, and therefore an excellent name for a ship of dreams.

I think you're cut from finer things than maxim cloth my good fellow. I'd suggest a writer on a show of your own conjuring or perhaps a stand up routine may better suit your sharp and clever tongue.

However my gripe wasn't exclusive to maxim. (I must say the misplacement of the word journalism was improper on my part and for that I should be lambasted).

No my gripe was with all forms of hack journalism which seem to pass for the norm these days. News coverage is a soap opera! In fact its coverage of a soap opera that seems to pass for news! These pedlars of misery have a great deal to answer for.

That said a mag called 'Gazongas' has class written all over it! Call me shallow but I laughed when I read that.

Dont get me wrong...But I think your all being thin skinned. Maxim is aimed at the 18-35 Alpha caucasian male. And as much as I love FF. Its not for everybody, it never will be. Maxim has the right to review anything in anystyle they see fit. "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend, to the death, your right to say it!" We can disagree, but the main jist of their article is that the TITLE is misleading. I agree that it is... (To someone whos never heard os Firefly.) Serenity is a state of Sereneness ...would any of you say this was a Serene movie? Now if Martha Stewart said in her magazine that Nascar is just a bunch of cars going left really fast...she will expect backlash...but its her right to say so. I would be more offended if Popular Science had bad things to say about my beloved Serenity.

OK, so Maxim isn't exactly the New York Times in terms of journalistic integrity. And I do think that whoever wrote this is ignorant of the legacy of FIREFLY (If no one truly watched it, then why is there such a huge following that made a loud enough voice to warrant a feature length movie).

But I do agree that the title is somewhat misleading, if only on a surface level. I mean, remember the TV ad's for the movie. It was all big action and testosterone with the volume cranked up way past 11, and then it ends with "SERENITY". If I were a regular joe blow who had never heard of FIREFLY or SERENITY beforehand, I would have been confused too with the ads as well. Plus, if you think about it, FIREFLY was a misleading title for the series as well. It's only mentioned two times that the ship was a Firefly class transport. And the fact that this ship is that is a rather insignificant detail. So why name a series after that?

Most likely it was just a title that was chosen just so that they'd have a title.

But I think SERENITY is something of an apt title.

I'm actually impressed that *any* reference to Serenity made in into Maxim.

I don't know what other films made it into the article, but it seems to me that, no matter how snide it might be, it's still an acknowledgement of the fact that a movie was made. And of the fact that that movie was made due to the efforts of fans.

How many titles are chosen that have anything to do with the subject? Star Trek only had ONE version that had anything to do with the actual show, and that was Enterprise. The other series(as far as I can recall) never said they were on a "star Trek".

IMO, the title fit, because of what Zoe said in the deleted scenes on the series disks: "you never leave(Serenity)" I think maybe Joss was making a comment on the fan's love of the series.

If Joss had called the show " Whores In Space " it would now be in its 5th season with episode # 112. Would have been enormously popular, and probably sucked as a result of that popularity. We'd be getting ready for the X-Mas release of "Space Brothel III"......

Don't get me wrong.... I love the names Serenity & Firefly, and I had NO problem becoming a Browncoat even with never having seen Firefly. I just thought the name Serenity was cool & I had heard it was about space, so I watched. Other catchy names Joss probably passed on for the series : Bullets Over Betelgeuse Heavenly Highwaymen Once Upon A Time In Outer Space New Earth : 2600 AD etc etc ...I don't question Joss however.

I'm not sure about ENTERPRISE, but I do remember in ST: FIRST CONTACT that Zephram Cochrane used the phrase "star trek". And STAR TREK does aptly describe what's at the heart of the franchise. Joe Blow hears the title and think "Ok, it's about a group of people travelling across the stars.", pretty basic. But when same Joe Blow hears FIREFLY, he thinks "A show about bugs? Shouldn't this be on the Discovery Channel?" Like I said, the title itself is pretty vague. At least with Star Trek, you know exactly what's happening.

Not to hijack the thread, what are some other movies that have titles that have nothing to do with the movie? Two that really stick out are NAKED LUNCH and FARGO. With the latter, only the opening scene takes place in Fargo, North Dakota. The rest of the film is in Minnesota in either Brainerd or the twin cities. And the former is apparently an existentialist term that has to do with the meat on your fork. Still doesn't help explain the movie, which THE SIMPSONS made fun of perfectly. That movie should have been renamed to "Fucked Up Shit". Because every single thing about that movie is fucked up beyond all recognition.

BRAZIL could be considered one, but on the poster, the tagline is "It's not a place. It's a state of mind.' And the whole movie is what takes place in Sam Lowry's mind, so it is a perfect title.

It's also very apropos for the whole Miranda/Pax version of "serenity"...on the other hand, I kind of agree it wasn't the best title to lure newbies into the 'verse (I mean, the movie didn't exactly have an easy to explain premise/plot, so the least you could do is have a catchy/evocative title, right?)

Well to hear about a movie you first have to have some sort of advertisement/promo. Now, I usually watch, read, listen to that advertisement and make the judgment about a movie then. Exceptions may include billboards, posted items, etc. (already been plenty bashing on the advert subject)

Without an advertisement I wouldn't know what the hell Black Dahlia was about, even it was based on a famous story. Not sure I have ever decided to watch a movie based on name alone. Even if it was called “Space Whores”, I’d research it a lil first. (then pre-order 12 copies, :wink: ) Then, of course, there is the forced viewing from the significant other. Which, in our case, prolly has helped us.

I think some are supplanting conclusions about people’s initial reaction to a title when it prolly has lil or no consequence on their decision to go or not to go to Serenity. Much like the consequence/affect of this Maxim article.

"Pirates of the Space Western" sounds catchy :wink:

Well, with A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, the term is actually referenced in the book, but was left out of the movie, and it generally refers to something biological or natural that's been tampered with to function like a machine, thus Alex becomes a clockwork orange. Ironically, the movie is about free will.

PULP FICTION opens with the dictionary definition for pulp, and since the stories in the movie are over the top and sensationalist, then the title is pretty apt.

The rest of them I think tie into their movies one way or another, except for Goodbye Columbus. Judging from the plot description on imdb, I really don't think the title has to do with anything.

PULP FICTION opens with the dictionary definition for pulp, and since the stories in the movie are over the top and sensationalist, then the title is pretty apt.

The rest of them I think tie into their movies one way or another, except for Goodbye Columbus. Judging from the plot description on imdb, I really don't think the title has to do with anything.

Goodbye Columbus....at the very, very end of the movie we hear the "fight song" played on a record for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ali McGraw's brother, the tall, lanky guy in the movie was an ex-basketball player who went to Ohio State...that's the refernce to the title Columbus....as if could not let go of his past glory. Please tell me any reference for A Patch of Blue.

I havn't seen the movie, but I read the short story in high school. The girl in the story is blind, but she wasn't blind from birth. She went blind when she was five. And when the guy asks her what she remembers, she says "a patch of blue", which is in reference to the sky. Basically, it's her one happy memory from when she was little. And the relationship she has with this new guy is her patch of blue.

Well, considering that the topic of this thread is an 'editorial' piece in Maxim titled, "MOST MISLEADING MOVIE TITLES", I don't consider this off-topic.

...And perhaps the Maxim correspondent, as ReginaRoadie suggests, is not that far off-base in claiming that Serenity was mistitled. I never really thought about it before, since I was a dyed-in-the-wool Firefly fan since it originally appeared on F*x, and hence, understood the references; but, perhaps the titles, "Firefly" and "Serenity" were both the actual reason for the series' and movie's failure.

That's pretty bold, I know. But, I also know the general mindset of rank-and-file TV viewers and moviegoers. You have to hit them over the head with a two-by-four and use really short words to get them to understand anything. Especially with a title like "Serenity" -- which contains four syllables in a single word -- there is too little description of the movie's content (and what information the title does convey would be totally misleading) to an American viewer scanning the 'Now Showing!' webpage for their local cinema.

For example: In my little 'metropolis', if one peruses the website of the various cineplexes, one is presented with the titles and showtimes, sans promo items. If one wants to see those, one must first click on the movie title, which will then deposit the surfer on the movie's promo page.

So, when presented with a page of 20-or-so titles, like "Pirates of the Carribean: The Drain on Credulity", or "Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Stomach Acid", the title "Serenity" sticks out like a sore thumb as a movie to be avoided by action/adventure adrenaline junkies...

Ergo -- and I know this has probably been discussed many times 'round the Jossnet -- the question is: Did the title sink the movie?

I'm not saying that the 'journo' who did the Maxim piece (heh-heh, used 'Maxim' and 'piece' in the same phrase) was correct in his total argument regarding "Serenity" -- specifically, wherein he says the movie itself was a bad idea. However, had he argued that the movie was well-conceived and -delivered, and that only the title had sunk it at the theatres, well, that would have been a compelling argument, and harder to refute.

...A title like, "Space Pirates and the Attack of the Reavers", while totally banal, would have put the right fannies in theatre seats, in the traditional American style, given the total lack of discernment of your typical moviegoer.

P.S. Increasingly, Americans find it easier to watch movies and other streaming pretty pictures/noises, while simultaneously finding it harder to read anything. It's all about The Quest For Meaning, and yet being too lazy to make a proper job of it...

P.P.S. The question Joss should ask himself, in the future, is: Would Jayne (his lowest-common-denominator everyman) watch this movie based on this title? _________________________________________________

Thanks for that explanation. I have actually seen the movie several times, yet I must have missed the reference. It's very hard to watch, and very sad, and the ending is a bit murky. Shelley Winters was amazingly talented in her role of un-fit and cruel parent & Poitier was again a strong moral character. Thanks!
