...would things have gone so badly for Mal that he would have totally embraced the Dark Side? I mean, wasn't River the main reason that Mal discovered Miranda and found a belief worth dying for?

I'm not one hundred percent sure it was belief Mal found, however much the Shepherd implored him.

But your basic question, I think, is if it hadn't been for not leaving River behind and calling the operative down on him, would Mal have continued the self destructive cycle of anger that the leave-taking of two of his crew had only pronounced.

And yes, I think it would.

I think Simon and River leaving before Serenity would have only accelerated it.

He might have managed to hold on to Zoe, for as long as it took her being stubborn and outraged by Wash's suggestions that they go to realize that she couldn't really help him anymore. But eventually, everyone would have left.

Not that I think he's really pulled himself out of that STILL, mind you.

That's one thing I love about "Serenity"- the redemption factor. It took the evil of the Operative to bring out the good in Mal. River being involved gave them the chance to save each other IMO.
