It's something I've thought about for a some time. But, I spoose it's unlikely what with Fox taking down an RPG site (Lord knows they'd do the same t a video game).

But I just wondered if Joss considered the possibility of a Firefly video game?

If it was officially licensed then sure. Why not?

There was talk of one a few years back but it got into licensing issues between Fox and Universal. At least that's what supposedly killed it. My guess is that it lacked any real potential to make big bucks. If there was enough money on the line then Fox and Universal would happily come to an agreement.

I have a feeling it's Fox that's being the main roadblock.

Although granted Universal's never had the best track record in complying to fans' wishes much either (greenlighting "Serenity" was a rare moment). And they're notorious for taking a dump on people who have little to no clout in Hollywood. I'm nt saying Joss has no clout, but it's still surprising they let him write and direct the movie and story he wanted.

Although it's not exactly what you're looking for, it seems to me that Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic has some Firefly fans on the staff.

One of the classes, the Smuggler, has a lot of art that features long coats, brown coats, and cowboy hats. Another class, the Imperial Agent, bears a much closer resemblence to the Operative than to anything I've ever seen or read in the Star Wars universe (in fact, one of the specializations for the class is called the Operative).

But I digress...

Not a big enough fan base to make it worthwhile. And the big catch with licenses games (and the reason so many suck) is the licensing fee. Developers pay a nice chunk of change for a recognizable property - thus leaving them with a smaller budget for the actual game, leading more often than not to a crappy product.

There's actually a few fangames "in the works" out there so to speak that take some inspiration from Firefly.

I'm helping work on one myself, called The Border Moons. Instead of being in Firefly's verse, it's centered around Earth and her colonies. There's a virus that has been unleashed out on the Border Moons that turns people axe-crazy. So Earth sends out a bunch of volunteers to go wade into the danger and help out the people who are immune, unaffected, or haven't succumbed yet to fend off the raiders, and maybe find a vaccine or cure.

I'm on the art team, so you can bet I'm going to try to put a bunch of shout-outs in. We have the engine all up, too, which is pretty good all considering, and you should see some of our features.

Basically, the game is a birds-eye 2D dungeon crawler, which is good, because I'm terrible with 3D and polygons, much better with sprites. You choose your class and your general looks, each class has different skills, strengths, and weaknesses, etc. etc. You put together a crew much like other games let you put together a guild, and your ship becomes a guildhall you purchase, where you can chat and hang out in between hitting turf, competing violently and non-violently with other crews for objectives, and fighting off the infected.

One of the main reasons I got involved was that the game engine allows for a little mini-game for the pilot class while they're flying around... I want to see where we can take that.

Website is here, though it hasn't been updated for a while. I'm still in touch with Dreamlarp though, still slowly working on the character and NPC sprites. We probably need some more sprite people, really, I have only one weekend out of a month I can do any work for it.

The grassy area screenshots are just when we were testing out some of the game mechanics, the final sprites and areas won't look like that. I could post some of my character sprites, but they'll just be the basic paper-dolls with modesty garb, I'm still just working on hairstyles. After that, wide variety of eastern and western clothing. I'm talking saris, layered dresses, cowboy attire, dusters, hanfu, straw hats, even some modern suits, combat armor, and shirts and jeans.
