Anyone who's seen the pilot, can you tell me if the spaceships have guns on them, or is combat strictly boarding?

I haven't actually seen any preview's other than the promo's on the official site.... But I seem to remember that Joss said somewhere that lasers and stuff do exist but they are too expensive for most people.

I guess including our friends Mal and crew.... Well at least for a few episodes anyway!

Lasers? Lasers? We don't need no stinkin' lasers! You'd think that 500 years in the future, folks would have started using railguns. For those unfamiliar with the concept, railguns basically use electromagnets to accelerate the projectile. For more info go to http://www.io.com/~bolie/Tech/Railguns.html

But lasers would be harder to dodge. No matter how fast your railgun projectile travels (I gather that muzzle velocity is determined by how much electrical energy you use) it'd still be only a fraction of the speed of light.

Plus there's recoil. For a small spaceship, the change in delta-vee would just be too much. Indeed, I've heard more talk of railguns as propulsion than as weapons. Just the thing for an asteroid miner -- don't commute to your mine, move the mine to a convenient orbit. The asteroid itself provides the projectiles.

Ooh, just realized. Firing one of those six-shooters in zero-gee should have very comic results. No doubt they've already shot that scene.

Of course, lasers don't do much damage unless you put a lot of power into them. The X-Ray lasers they had planned for the Strategic Defense Initiative were fired by setting off an atomic bomb!

Hm, does Serenity have a ship's cat? They'd probably have a laser for that...

Hey, want to build your own railgun? Here's how:

You raise some good points. Projectiles moving at sublight speeds are somewhat impractical for space combat. Oh well, here's hoping we see some ships with lasers on 'em soon.

Well at least in the Pilot episode there where no mention or use of any lasers, or any ship to ship weapon except one.

Select to view spoiler:

The Reavers have a Magnetic Grapple on their ship that they use to attack other vessels. Also I do believe there are ships with weapons that can fire in space as during the pilot episode on of the Alliance people as if they should use the Gunships on the Serenity.

Also I do believe that only the advanced or very rich people will have any advanced weaponry.

I'm trying to be polite here, but I'm getting pissed. First we have to beat you over the head to get you to use spoiler tags at all (why was that even an issue?). Now you don't seem to understand what constitutes a spoiler. Here's a simple rule: any info you derive from watching stuff that hasn't been broadcast yet is a spoiler.

Get it together, or I'm going to ask Haken to ban you.

And I am sure you have Haken's ear?

I think he can think for himself. You would think the simple mention of the word Firefly should have spoiler tags.

I have been on boards for ages and have yet to see people so freaky about spoilers.

But just for you

all my posts from now on will be between spoiler tags that way you won't become offended

Zic can you tell me how this is in any way shape or form a spoiler?

It's like telling me that Star Wars has ships whose wings flip open or that Federation ships nacelles glow blue!

Yeah....i suppose if you want to get way to picky it COULD be a spoiler but is it a meaningful spoiler?

To me, the bad spoilers are the real plot points like :

Inara gets pregenant!
Kaylee sleeps with the Captain!
Jayne changes his name to the more masculine sounding, Betty!
