Hi there.
I saw the movie some years ago, never saw the series.
Now I somehow remembered it and feel like watching it again, then found out that it is based on the series Firely. I did some research and found out, that the movie is somehow like a 15th episode of the series and there are some months between E14 and the movie in the timeline.

My question now is, as I said I watched the movie some years ago, as far as I remember, in the beginning of the movie they take the girl with her brother as kind of hitchhikers and dont know them before. But isnt River already in the series and isnt she a part of the crew in the series already?

Thats my question. I am not a native English speaker so pardon me if my English isnt good.

Greetings

Your English is fine. The movie does a bit of recap at the beginning but it is mostly in flashback form. By the time we catch up with the crew pulling their heist job they already know River fairly well.

You get to see more of them getting to know River in the series. Then you actually see the first meeting between the crew and River/Simon. There are also some comic books that link up the end of the series and the beginning of the movie.

Like Zeek said, your English is fine, though to me it sounds like a naming convention has tripped you up.

There are TWO entries in the franchise that are both called Serenity.

The first is the pilot episode of Firefly, "Serenity," where River and Simon come aboard the ship.

The second is the movie, "Serenity," which takes place a while after the start of the series, which has Simon and River as established crew members, but recaps how Simon broke River out.

To differentiate between the two, we often call the episode Serenity the "pilot episode," and the movie Serenity the "movie," or "BDM" (Big Damn Movie, after the big damn heroes quote).

Welcome.
The film Serenity is more similar to the Second Season of Firefly. The creator (Joss Whedon) condensed the end of first season and the second season into one story, then condensed it even more to fit into 90 minutes.

To help non-fans understand the film and the character history (without having seen the series Firefly first), they explained the River situation by showing a flashback of Simon's rescuing River from the Institute - the flashback was actually a recording of the even, which occured about 8 months prior to The Operative playing the recording back in the opening of the film. Likewise, Simon and River board Serenity (which happen in the Pilot episode Serenity) about 8 months before the main body of the film, as mentioned by Mal when he's throwing Simon about.
The opening of the film (The Operative at the Institute) takes place a few weeks before the rest of the film, as mentioned by Mr Universe, who noticed the subliminal messages in the Fruity Oaty Bar commercials (inserted by The Operative.)

Got all that?

Many people consider the series to be better than the movie, and also to be the best Sci Fi series aver broadcast.
