I came home today from yet another day of fixing people's computers in my *wonderful* field of technical support...another mind-numbing day of darwin award winners.....but neway...

I turn on musicmatch on my system at home, and the song that I am treated to is "Serenity" by Godsmack....the chorus of which is "I need Serenity".......

isn't that the truth?...

BTW,,something unrelated to THIS post...I watched the DVD set straight through..some interesting developments in the "I don't care if you're innocent" comment by Book.
My theory is that Book is actually an operative of the Alliance, maybe on officer on retainer for Blue Sun, who was assigned to track and access River. Certain things are alluded to..maybe he really isn't a full-time shepard at all, but a fallen one that fell in during the war?...

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

The idea that Book is some deep operative or former military w/ the Alliance has gotten a lot of attention. Pertaining to River, however, I have my doubts as to whether he's assigned to her or not. If you recall, Book gets onto Serenity BEFORE Simon does. If Book somehow knows which ship Simon is going to get on before Simon knows, why bother following him? Just alert the Feds and be done with it. And then you also have the whole nasty issue of Lawrence. Maybe Book is trying to SAVE River, but then, how'd he know which ship to get on before she arrived?

If Book was a 'deep operative' surely he wouldn't go round identifying weaponry and shooting up a storm? He makes no secret of his military knowledge, so obviously he doesn't mind if they suspect he's not what he seems.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

I'm new to this site, so I'm not sure if this has been explored, but maybe Book isn't working with the Alliance at all. Myabe he's actually what he says he is, only more so: a shepherd getting out of the cloisters for a bit of adventure. I mean more so by the thought that he may be some kind of analogue to the Pope or a cardinal, which would explain the quick reception once the Alliance sees his paperwork. Also why he doesn't want to talk about it, since he's apparently trying to get away from it all. I have friends who enjoy military history, so the fact that he knows something about weaponry doesn't necessarily indicate any kind of military connection. Also, if he were a high-level shepherd, he would probably have access to whatever might interest him, such as ships or weapons. Just a thought.

Maybe Book used to be a padre on one of those flying buildings the Alliance has. He saw something ugly (at Serenity Valley?) and retired to the monastery, but now he's tired of the landlubber lifestyle and wants to get on a ship again. Any ship. Perhaps not this one.

that IS true about book boarding before simon...ya got me on that one....the ideas about Book actually being what he says is intriguing, though it seemed more like the assault on Lawrence was more to keep good ole' Larry's mouth shut to me personally....might have to watch that ep again to make sure....though the "innocent" comment is really what makes me wonder....

ah well....mebbe thing sshall be explained in the BDM

My pet theory is that Book is actually a former high-ranking commander in the alliance, maybe the one who led the assult on Serenity Valley ... wouldn't that have made a nice potential blockbuster a couple of series into the show?

Commanding the serenity valley conflict?.....interesting.......

another thing is that if Book is actually really trying to escape his past, the encounter with our buddy Larry might have been instigated by the possibility that Jayne's punching bag (or would-be whetstone) might have actually KNOWN Book before....
