I live in Toronto, with a satillete dish, and it appears that Fox-E has preempted Firefly and John Doe for a baseball game. Fox-W broadcasts Firefly and John Doe at midnight (AST). Global broadcasts Firefly at 8, but not John Doe.

That's bad news for ratings.

Anyone else's Fox affilete preempt Firefly?

I wouldn't get too worried. Fox gets boffo ratings for baseball playoffs (usually) and I wouldn't be surprised to see Firefly pre-empted in the future this season due to baseball; hey, as long as some team is beating the Yankees that's okay with me.

The affiliate I get (from Rochester) is airing Firefly/John Doe this week.

BTW, I'm from Manitoba so "Howdy!" from a fellow Canuck.

Yeah but the fact Firefly is airing in less markets will hurt the ratings.

Yeah, we Canucks have to stick together against the damn yanks :) eh :)

Do they group the Canadian ratings with the US ratings?

Actually I don't like the Yankees because I'm a Boston Red Sox fan who is none to pleased that they're missing the playoffs. AGAIN. Damn relief pitchers...

I think that MOST markets in the U.S. (and Canada) will get Firefly although now I'm curious. It's not great news but this time of year is not a good time for ANY show to start up on Fox. I'm worried Angel will have terrible ratings now that it's on Sundays, up against all the crappy made-for-tv melodramas (or terrible special fx laden mini series), ESPN Sunday Night Football and other programs. Fortunately "Space: The Imagination Station" airs Angel on Thursdays (I doubt they'll change this) so no worries here; just worried about overall ratings in the States.

I know what you mean about Angel. SUCH a bad day for shows (except Alias, for some reason it does good there).

What I like is that I get Buffy at 7 on Monday (from NTV) a full day before most people heh heh heh.

As for ratings Canadian ratings can be found here:
http:://www.canoe.ca/TelevisionRatings/home_regionratings.html

For US ratings I use http://www.boxofficemojo.com/tv/ but they seem to be off, they're saying that Firefly only got a 4.0

What ratings place do you guys use?

I wouldn't worry about that. I'm sure The WB is well aware that they're putting Angel in a bad place. If the ratings drop sharply this season, they'll probably just go, "Well, that was dumb of us."
Actually, though, I think The WB may have a pretty good thing going on Sundays. I mean, I actually plan to watch three hours of WB that night--maybe even four if Everwood turns out to be as bad as Emily VanCamp's last gig. That's at least as much as I'll be watching the entire rest of the week put together. So that could be a good sign if I'm at all normal.

The premiere of Charmed did really well in the ratings, which could be a good sign for Angel, and I think the WB's expectations are modest. But it is the most competitive timeslot possible.

As far as the Firefly preemption in Toronto, I don't think Canadian ratings really matter to the show's chances.

I'm not sure if the show will be preempted for the baseball playoffs or not. I know episode 3 will air. If there are a few preemptions coming after that, that could be why Joss moved his episode up to third.

Ah another Emily Van Camp fan. I watched Glory Days just for her and Poppy Montgomery. I watched "Everwood" for her and expected it to be a 7th Heaven type show. I was glad it wasnt, it was actually really good. Much more realistic too.

4.0 is the final "hard" number.

Up until this point, all anybody had were overnight numbers. Overnights are in a state of flux as they're literally measured overnight, and since different reporting services have different deadlines, the reported overnight rating can vary.

Hmm... only 1 show on Fridays even cracked the top 20 (Law and Order). So Firefly didn't be *that* bad.

I think I saw it in that long article in the NY Times. Got to slayage.com and scroll down for a link.

Whedon is always saying stuff like this. He obviously has performance anxiety issues. I read somewhere that really creative people often have this problem -- in fact they often use it to drive their work. Like most really good actors have stage fright, but they don't push it back they build it into their acting.

JOSS, WHERE'S MY CHECK???!!!

FF will get preempted next week for baseball for sure because Fox is carrying the game nationally. What I can't tell is if it will get hurt this week because of the yankees/angels game which is on at 7:00pm EST and, I assume, will be carried in New York and LA (where it should just push back the start). Not that NY and LA are significant markets or anything.

Ah. I didn't realize it was being preempted here (NY). That basically makes the rating for this one irrelevant, and makes me wonder why they would air what is likely one of the stronger episodes when no one can see it.

It's from the New York Times article. He was saying it in jest, mostly. I liked it cause it's much to my sense of humor... something that I'd say about my work

That is the big question. Does Fox have a plan for FF or is programming as haphazard as it seems? I guess that's why I'm not a network executive. I just don't get it.

From www.zap2it.com:

At 8 p.m., CBS' "48 Hours Investigates" led the hour with 7.3/14 as
"Providence" returned to NBC in second place, 7.0/13. "America's Funniest
Home Videos" was third on ABC, 4.8/9, as "Firefly" finished fourth on FOX,
4.3/8.

The new CBS drama "Hack" continues to thrive at 9 p.m., winning the hour with
8.1/14. "Dateline NBC" was in second with 6.8/12 as FOX's "John Doe" took
third, 4.8/8. "That Was Then" still hasn't found an audience on ABC, trailing
at 2.8/5.

*********************

As far as I can tell, that 4.3 is compared to 4.1 for The Train Job and 3.6 for Bushwacked. If so, I'd take that as an encouraging sign that the show might be starting to build an audience. Although it's hard to say how the ratings are impacted by being preempted in New York and L.A.

I've read one opinion that the overnights may include the ratings for the baseball game in New York and L.A. If that's true, the numbers probably aren't that good at all, since the Yankees in NY may have easily drawn about a 15, which would seriously distort the overall number. But I don't know if that's true or not.

This is good. Two reasons, one, the audience that caught it apparently got a very good episode that will bring them back, and Two, the ratings went up. Even if it's slow, if the ratings continue to climb, we're good, and the fact that it and John Doe are getting roughly the same ratings (it got a 4.8/8) that means it won't be seen as a bad lead-in. With lead-ins, if the show after you get's lower ratings, it would be Firefly that is blamed for being a bad lead-in, not John Doe, and the fact that John Doe got a 6.0 in it's first showing is actually good for us cause they can't blame Firefly as a bad lead-in.

Lets hope the next episode improves further (although i think it might be the repeat of 'last weeks ep' on Wednesday(?) or whenever that might be a big factor.
