No. Joss Whedon once said that he would have added sound in space if FOX demanded it (if it meant he got to tell his story still) but from what I can gather the whole point of his deal with Universal is pretty much complete creative control. He simply wouldn't have signed up to ruining it like happened with Buffy if the execs were going to stick their noses in.

Plus I think Universal dig on the original and arty style of the show - they want the same: bad zooms, wobbly cameras, out-of-focus and bizarre shots, unconventional lighting and yes, no sound in space!

I LOVED the no sound in space! I'm one of those people who always complained about it- Took many a science class in college.

obviously this has been answered correctly above.

There are a lot of 'science' mistakes in Firefly, and there probably will be in 'Serenity' too...
but the silence in space has more to do w/metaphor (IMO) than science.

Joss' whole point, as explained in the 'OiS' commentary is that man is isolated and alone in a silent dark infinite and hostile universe. It is a strong existential metaphor and one he would never willingly abandon.

Maybe someone who saw the Serenity footage at Comic-Con can confirm whether or not the movie will have sound in space? I'm sure I read that there was some footage of the ship during that teaser/trailer.

From what I understand, this was teaser footage, and so wouldn't guarantee whether there was sound or not - indeed, until the test audiences (morons to a fault, no offence to the barrel scraping gene pools that they crawl from) leave it alone, nothing is certain:

"I liked the film, but the fact that there was no sound in space ruined it for me. I have seen Star Wars 17 times and there is so sound in space! I would not watch this film if there was no sound in space!"

"Someone forgot to put the vroom and ptchoaw sounds over the space ships - you should fix that."

"I threw up on your bed"

Yeah, I've often cringed at the concept of test audiences having any input whatsoever in the final state of a movie. I grew up close enough to Burbank to actually participate in the whole process. Not sure if things have changed but people used to hang out in front of theaters and hand out tickets to free test screenings. The major draws for me and my friends were: it was free, you got to go on a studio lot to watch the movie, the seats were really comfortable, and did I mention that it was free? The majority of the audience was just like me and my friends, high school students with nothing better to do that particular night. I never took the questionnaire at the end seriously and I don't know anyone who did. I would be surprised if any useful suggestions came out of any of the sessions I attended.

Maybe they've changed the process in the past fifteen years or so. But then again, we were the target demographic.

I shaved off my beard for you, devil woman!
