LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Fast National ratings for Friday, Sept. 27, 2002

The season premiere of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" pushed NBC to the top of the ratings Friday night, while CBS' new crime-fighting shows, "Hack" in particular, got off to decent starts.

For the night, NBC averaged an 8.4 rating/15 share. CBS followed with a 6.3/11. ABC, 5.0/9, was third, with FOX, 4.0/7, trailing.

Among adults 18-49, NBC led with a 3.9 rating. FOX, 2.7, finished slightly ahead of ABC and CBS, which averaged 2.6 each.

The first half of a two-hour "Dateline NBC" won the 8 p.m. hour with a 6.6/12. "America's Funniest Home Videos" took second for ABC, followed by the premiere of the revamped "48 Hours Investigates," 5.0/9, on CBS. FOX's "Firefly" earned a 3.6/7.

"Dateline" kept its lead at 9 p.m. with an 8.4/15. Close behind was CBS' "Hack," which premiered to an impressive 8.2/15. FOX's "John Doe," 4.4/8, dropped off some in its second week, and few people ventured back to the '80s with ABC's "That Was Then," which averaged a meager 3.0/5 in its debut.

At 10 p.m., "Law & Order: SVU" averaged 10.2/18, making it the highest-rated show of the night. ABC's "20/20" was second at 6.6/12, followed by the debut of "Robbery Homicide Division" on CBS, 5.7/10.

Ratings information is taken from fast national data. All numbers are preliminary and subject to change.

Let's hope FOX will be pacient! cause when you look at it nobody have impresive rating there other than Dateline/SVU and Hack

The ratings remain unsatisfactory. OTOH, looking at the big picture, I do see some things that at least indicate no immediate cancellation looming.

I think a modest dropoff is almost inevitable after the first week, since not everyone who watches a premiere is going to like it, and it will take some time for people who didn't watch to find the show. I think week three needs to be up from week two, though. I thought Bushwacked was really good, so hopefully it will get some word of mouth going.

This week's numbers were more or less in line with John Doe's, given that I'd consider 9pm the better timeslot. FF held onto more of it's week one audience.

There are some shows on the major networks (actually, just on ABC) that are doing worse.

All in all, I'm still not really optimistic, but I'm also not anticipating a quick hook just yet.

I wonder how the ratings will look after there are no more "premiers". Everyone knows the first episode of a new season draws more audience than most subsequent ones; that has to throw of the ratings for shows in the same time slot that aren't running a "first" episode. It's sort of like baseball that way (which smashes ratings for its own networks' shows, because people CAN'T possibly watch the regular shows).
