Nice piece. I do wish you'd folded in or linked to some of your previous posts on the subject, which are pretty educational.

One little quibble:
Quote:

The Alliance Commander was trained, but he didn’t know how to fight at close quarters.
I think it's more accurate to say the Colonel didn't understand what fighting is. He'd studied in terms of tactics and organization and logistic. But he had no mental preparation for the most common encounter between opposing military forces -- two people, each of whom has no priority other than making the other dead.

Obviously, the Colonel has led a sheltered existence. He's spent most of his life in places where people rarely encounter actual violence, and tend to assume "the peace" is a natural state of affairs.

It's easy to sneer at people like this. But how many of us are all that different? We can buy weapons and learn how to use them. But, as Jeff points out, training with weapons is not the same thing as learning to fight. And learning to fight requires a kind of mental prepartion that's very difficult to achieve. Many people, even whole nations, equip themselves with powerful, expensive armaments, and persuade themselves that they've achieved "security". And yet, more often than not, people simply lack any real ability to use these arms, or to face the consequence of such use. Such people hide behind an illusion, and illusion that is itself very dangerous.

JOSS, WHERE'S MY CHECK???!!!
