How do you set aside differences to work as a team? What makes a great team?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright go back in time to Cinema Therapy’s origin story when Jonathan and Alan bonded over Firefly. They discuss the eight principles for uniting a team as portrayed by the Firefly crew. The members of the crew all have different ways of living and thinking, but they come to form a family. Jonathan and Alan share why this diverse crew works so well together, they marvel at the perfect chemistry of the cast, and of course, they geek out a lot.

“We are going to solve all of society’s problems with this show. What does that make us?
Big Damn Heroes.”

“You can change hearts. You can change minds. Not every heart. Not every mind. But this is how you do it. This is the blueprint.”

Principles illustrated with scenes from Firefly:
#1 Serve without judgment
#2 See the good in those you disagree with
#3 Look after who you are with
#4 All relationships take work
#5 Create loyalty by showing loyalty
#6 Find a group that will reciprocate loyalty and love
#7 Trust is a choice
#8 Grieve with and comfort each other

It's the Family you make.

On an individual level, I have some good people in my family, but even reaching out to extended family on both sides, the whole "family" thing seemed like a dumb joke. Most of them are pretty lousy people. At least, most of them aren't any good at Family, anyhow.

But after my sobriety, and when I finally got my head screwed on straight enough to start tackling some major issues I'd allowed to pile up, my new family started when I reached out to an old friend for help. And even though it had been years since we talked while I shut everyone out with my addiction, he didn't think twice and was right there for me. Shortly thereafter I was invited to his big 40 year b-day bash and got an apology from an even older friend who thought I hated him for something he did half a lifetime ago... Something I hadn't really even thought about for almost that long, and I immediately told him that it was water under the bridge. Fast forward 3 years and I'm breaking bread with his family on the holidays.

I have a lot of free time in my life when I'm not working on my house or other projects, and it turns out that it really feels good helping people out with their own problems and not always asking yourself "what's in it for me". And through doing that you foster a sense of loyalty and obligation to return the favor. I spend a lot of time with both of my friend's families these days, and I've probably been told several dozen times by now that "you're part of the family" or some variation of that in the last few years.

I dunno...

Maybe I'm being too hard on my blood family. It's not as if I was a great person myself when they were in my lives. But to be fair to myself too I think you emulate what you see when you're growing up. Maybe someday there might be an opportunity to test that theory, but for now, I'm happy with my new family. And there is no longing for the blood family either, save for a vague sense of nostalgia that surrounds them... , making the whole thing seem a lot shinier in my mind than it ever was by painting this idyllic picture of that family while leaving out all of the innumerable non-working, dysfunctional and incompatible parts.

"It's the family you make."

That's what my friend's wife said to me.

Cheers to that.

Why don't you tell us about your story, Ted?

We'd all love to know what explains your situation and why you never got a proper education growing up.

SERENITY and Coping with Trauma

What happens when you're kidnapped from your family, tortured, and conditioned into being an assassin? You get River Tam. And also Alan, apparently. Alan Seawright, filmmaker, and therapist Jonathan Decker discuss what we can learn about coping with trauma from Summer Glau's character River in Serenity and Firefly. They break down some of the symptoms of PTSD she exhibits, and some of the things that help her work through them and start healing.

Even though most of us don't live in a sci-fi future with spaceships, space zombies, and space cowboys (along with psychics and lots of other fun), we can still learn a thing or two about how to heal from and deal with the trauma we do face in real life.
