Idea from a Browncoat on the Serenitymovie forum
http://www.serenitymovie.org/browncoats/forums/index.php?showtopic=871
2&st=0&gopid=283597&#entry283597
:

With September 30th (The 1st Anniversary of the BDM) coming up rapidly, I think it's high time we did something about it. It's a bit late to organize Theater showings nationwide, 'though we should applaud those who are attempting to do so. Given that we're still just scattered individuals, I'd like to propose two small projects that can garner BIG results:

1) On this date, every Browncoat as can should send an e-mail to Universal Studios, Thanking them for making Serenity, and requesting that they consider making a Sequel to Serenity. If done politely, and in great numbers, this will undoubtly get some heads to turn somewhere within that Organization!
Here's a link that should help:
http://www.universalstudios.com/homepage/html/contact_us/

The Snail Mail Address is:
Universal Pictures
100 Universal City Plaza
Universal City, CA 91608
(818) 777-1000

2) Those as can't organize or attend a Serenity Showing at a Large Venue can always "Think small":
If a couple thousand Browncoats scattered around the world were to throw small "Mini-Shindigs" within their homes or apartments, inviting non-Browncoats, as well as Browncoats, to watch and enjoy the BDM with them, the end results could be phenomenal.

Imagine; If 2000 Browncoats were to each invite, say, 4 newbies to watch the BDM, and half of those folks went on to be Browncoats... SHINY! ... 4,000 Browncoats recruited in one day! The end result would be thousands of BDMs purchased, along with BDSeries too, most like. Heads will turn, folks. Slowly, but they WILL turn!

Feel welcomed to cross post as appropriate! :)

Snail-mail has bigger impact than e-mail,
so use it if you can. Put "Serenity" on
the outside of the envelope, lower left
corner.

Also, does anyone remember that Sept. 20
is Captain Malcolm Reynolds' birthday?
Yeppers. 'Tis. Put a birthday candle

What might be a good idea for this is to compose a form letter that everyone can use. That way when they see the letters they know they are dealing with a United Community. We could have it posted on the Board for a copy and paste so that everyone has access. That would also help the people who do not have the time to compose a nice letter or are not as articulate and subtle. The last thing we would need is someone writing "Make a Serenity sequal you goram boobs!"

Just a thought. I am new here so if I over step let me know.

Actually the 1 year anniversary is on the 29th September, you say about Browncoats around the world doing this so that means the anniversay has to be the first country to have it released first and it wasn't America(30th) it was Australia which was released on the 29th of September,so you might want to edit your post to the 29th or their might be some Australians which want to talk wit you.

Our letter writing campaign to the Sci-Fi Channel involved brown paper. That way they didn't even have to read it to know what it said. I'm not sure that a form letter would be as effective, because they would know that each person didn't spend any time on it. It's easy to cut and paste. It takes effort to write something out. But you're right. We have to all be together on this, and they need to see that.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Definitely a great idea! Count me in!

I will organize some sort of Serenity Anniversary party here locally and invite some people who are not browncoats to the party. I will encourage the rest of the Richmond area browncoats to do the same.

I am also going to pick up some more copies of the dvd that week. They are only $13.74 each at Walmart right now. I can give these out as gifts, prizes, etc.

This could go a long way to giving us another much needed push and net us some new converts.

What a great idea!! I'll spread that idea around too! Or maybe, for people who can't find brown paper or don't want to buy a ream of brown paper for one thing, we could find someone to make a graphic that people could printout on the top of the page or something, & then we could handwrite or type on the paper still.

Exactly.

Australia had it a day earlier? Then Australians can do The Job a day earlier. Lots of Brit Browncoats are doing it a week later, when their anniv is. The point is to get The Job done and for us all to do it at, at least, around the same time for maximum impact.

I like this idea... local groups doing something for the anniversary. In fact I like this much better than another letter writing campaign. They've seen us do letter writing campaigns and I think that tactic may be wearing on them some.
Not trying to be down folks, but we need something fresh and new... something fun for all us fans too. Getting together in parties and celebrating and having a good time and then sharing DVD's and such with new converts.. prizes, I particularly like that idea!! This is all fun and it ain't the same old thing.

I think if Universal gets an idea that we're not desperate but growing the fan base and having a blast they'll be more impressed with that. I'm sure our local groups could plan big shindigs. Might get some press? Like the screenings..that would be different than our regular letter writing requests constantly wanting more.

Our Summer of Serenity has been about growing the fan base and having fun as a fandom. This idea would be a nice way to end with a bang the whole summer on the 'Versary.

Then we'd see whatever fun stuff we could come up with next

I agree with FollowMal. Writing a letter intimating that Universal should do a sequel is not a good way to help the Firefly cause. It would possibly do more harm than good. The standard operating procedure that is decided upon every time this subject comes up (and this comes up a lot among Browncoats, asking Universal for a sequel) is to keep any correspondence with the studio simple and limit it to saying thank you. You can include something shiny about Serenity, how great you thought it was, and how cool Universal was for funding it, and thanks for the support and the hard work. Don't mention a sequel.

Anything about badgering for a sequel should not be our job. That's Joss's. And I think he's better equipped to do that with grace than we are.

I think it would be better if all Browncoats from around the world do this on the same day that way Universal will get the most thank you notes(ever) for making Serenity, instead of them getting so many this day, that many another day, etc. But hey if Followmal thinks that we should split up into our own country's anniversay of Serenity then I'm all for it,anything to help the Browncoat community.

I've an idea and I want to run it by the people on this site. If we are here, we are by definition already sold on the 'Verse and Browncoats. The question of course is how to reach a wider audience. This is my idea and I want to float it by y'all to see what you think. By the 'y'all', you can figure I'm from the south and we have a saying: Preaching to the choir. Short explaination is talking to the already converted.

Now, we can all agree that Whedon writes incredibly strong women's roles and all members of Serenity are hotties. All, do a great deal of charity work in connection with their parts in Firefly/Serenity. Whedon's fave is Equality Now, a women's rights group, the rest are for children and disaster victims. Now, how is it possible that no women's service magazines have done any profiles on any members of the 'Verse?

I'm thinking a wide circulation magazine, you know the ones you see at the checkout lane in grocery stores, Border's et al? I'd have to try the profile(s) on spec and shop it around but this might be a way to reach a much wider audience. Summer Glau for a teen mag, Adam Baldwin as a hunk with a heart for any woman's mag - well you get the idea.

Does anybody else think this is viable way to expand the 'Verse?

Hi, Darkfly! I don't think we should split the anniversary up by our own country's day.. what I do think is we should have some parties and shindigs on the anniversary date, whichever one you want to choose. It's the partyin' I was promotin'!

As Browncoat1 said... each group, even 1 Browncoat alone could plan a party or a shindig or something to do as a way to celebrate the 'Versary. It's just a fun thing for fans to do. Since this whole summer has been about growing the amount of Browncoats that we have by tellin' folks about Serenity, inviting someone who's never seen it over for a viewing party or shindig might make for some very happy folks.
And we all know they'll fall in love with Firefly/Serenity!

Entertainment pieces are a little out of my line, I usually write about Child Support Enforcement but this is such a good cause that I could see myself writing about it with heart and vigor. I think that any good writer provided with the idea, facts, and a bevy of very pretty, strong, committed people - who along with being extremely good actors seem to use their influence for charities that benefit women, children, and the victims of disaster would find this an unbelievably easy sell. The only thing I can't figure out is why this hasn't already been done. Whedon writes some of the best characters out there: completely actualized men and women but it is treated as genre work with next to no general press coverage.

If there are folks who are itching to write a letter, why not write to one of the popular mags and ask for coverage for our Captain? Parade magazine has a section called "In Step With" and it shows up in every Sunday newspaper printed here in Charlotte. Nathan's new movie, White Noise 2, comes out in January '07. If a publication received enough requests over the next few months, is it possible he could get a feature article?

There are some highschoolers I know that have started a teenage magazine. The first issue came out yesterday, and I don't know when the next one comes out. Anyway, I don't know how anything about how the magazine business works, but if you manage to do the article, would there be a way to print it in more then one magazine? Because I'm sure they'd love to have a celebrity profile for their new magazine, and the BDH's would reach about 5,000 more teenagers in the Texas area. Tempest, I know this probably wasn't what you were thinking about, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Or if not, maybe I can just get them to put some sort of Serenity ad in their magazine.

Anyway, I'm definitely going to try to go to and/or organize some sort of shindig. Or at the very least, force some of my non Browncoat friends to watch the movie. And I think writing letters would be a great idea.

This is for Purple and Bun:

Who owns an article after first publication is dependent on what rights the writer contracts for prior to publication. The writer can retain reprint rights as part of negotiations, or some reprint rights, etc. Purple, do you know if any of the kids from the magazine are going to attend Dragon*Con as both Alan and Summer are attending? If not, I'd bet that both might be approachable for either an impromtu interview there or a phone interview.

What part of Texas are Alan and Summer from?

A few weeks ago I thought the best way to get the word out about the 'verse was to get Joss on Oprah. She can spread the word faster than anyone. I went to Oprah.com, and I wrote an e-mail about a show I would like to see.

Joss Whedon talking about his strong women characters. I even included Meryl Streep's introduction of him when he was awarded by Equality Now. I also included information about the Firefly Fans, and what the Browncoats have done to raise over $60,000 for Equality Now.

Reading this thread it came to me: what if everyone wrote to Oprah. Hmmm, they might take notice. I didn't mention our need for a sequel, but stressed all that is being done for women in need and the great strong woman characters that Joss writes.

Interesting, VE.

I confess I'm not sufficiently familiar with
Oprah's attitudes to know how she would feel
about a Registered Companion -- though I like
her fine the way she is, some might think that
if Inara were really so strong she would get
out of the Life and get a job behind a Taco
Boros counter or in one of those show-windows
near Eavesdown Docks.

Would Oprah call Joss out on the subject? Any
ideas?

Hmmm, I hadn't pondered her views of Inara. Oprah has had the cast members of Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City on at different times. They both have some strong women with peculiar ideas, experiences, and/or habits.

I can't say that I know what Oprah would think of a bona fide Companion, but whatever question she would ask, I would love to hear Joss' witty answers.

It was just a thought to get the word out to the main stream audience. Firefly is known in the Sci-Fi world, but when I mention it to most people, they say, "What's that? I've never heard of it."

Oprah is big on people helping other people, so I thought she would be interested in the money that the Browncoats raised for Equality Now.

VE,

I'm very interested in this idea. I too run into the " What's that, I've never heard of it before?" thing when telling folks about Firefly/Serenity. And you're right, entering Firefly/Serenity into the everyday world is what we need to do.

It's been my experience that folks who don't even like scifi will like Firefly. They do the same thing all of us do... they're hooked by the characters! The good stories!

The approach of having Joss go on Oprah because of his association to Equality Now and the work they do just might appeal to her.

Truly, approaching "getting the 'verse out there" from the direction of real life works, as we saw with the screenings on June 23rd. We don't need to be demanding more, or asking for more.... we need to show Universal that there are more of us. More of us to spend money, sit in those seats, buy the merchandise. They will see that as the general public becomes more aware of us.

How would you go about organizing a fandom wide letter writing to Oprah campaign? Let me know.
This is a good idea.

This is a good idea as well. And since I'm particularly drawn to the Cap'n. Ahem.. well... yes... let's see about this one too.

I thought about Oprah some months ago thinking she would go for the strong female characters and the charity fund raising, but then remember Oprah is an anti-gun nut. She would see all the fire power on FF/Serenity and go foam at the mouth, mad dog moonbat.

The week of September 30th, if everything goes off without a hitch, I'm planning on showing the entire series of Firefly throughout the week, then Serenity on Saturday, at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. With a very large screen.

Woo! : )

Arclight,
Please don’t judge me, but I hate guns. I don’t have one, and I don’t like to be around them. That said. I love my BDHs to have BDGs. It’s entertainment. I love watching Zoe shooting one of Patience’s guys from a prone position. I cheer when Mal walks in and shoots the Fed holding River. I love Jayne especially when he is affectionately holding Vera.

I’ve seen actors on Oprah promoting movies with guns and violence. One example is Tom Cruise and his movie the Last Samurai with tons of guns, cannons, sticks, and swords or Mission Impossible. I can’t say that she would like Firefly or Serenity, but she is interested in heart-warming stories. Part of me thinks that almost everyone might be a future Browncoat.

Hmmmm, how would I go about organizing a fandom wide letter writing to Oprah campaign? The 2 major things would be to set a date and then to get the word out to all Browncoats.

1. The Anniversary Date – June 30th (Australia, UK, and others can join us or use their own premiere dates) or we could choose a random date that would give us more time to spread the word. Maybe Halloween – October 31st.
2. Post on the Firefly/Serenity web sites, contact podcasters, and tell all the Browncoats that we know.

Oprah doesn’t have just one address. They have different Post Office boxes for all the shows that they have coming up in the future. There is an address for Harpo Studios to write for tickets, but they might be annoyed if there was a large amount of letters coming in for Joss. They take the requests for show ideas online.

In order to give a show idea, you need to be a member. All you need to do is select a username and password. There is no fee. It’s a small thing to ask of people that want more of the ‘verse. The note can only have 2000 characters including the spaces, so it doesn’t have to be a lengthy note.

We could ask others on this thread to see if anyone would participate in this campaign. I subscribe to The Signal, Firefly Talk, and After Serenity podcasts. If there seems to be support for this idea, I could call and/or e-mail them to see if they would spread the word. I can also post on the Firefly page of TV.com.

I live in the Phoenix area. I could get some of those great posters from 11th Hour’s web page to make flyers with information on the back. Then I can pass them out at the September 19th showing of Serenity. It will be filled with Browncoats.

Does anyone else think it’s a good idea? Does anyone else know of other Firefly/Serenity web sites that they could post information?

Just a quick note, VerseExplorer but it's late, so I'll go into more detail tomorrow.

We have the Browncoat Signal Corps set up to spread the word around the fandom. That will help too.

We also ship news to the podcasts. They pick if they'll use what we send them, but they did report on our calendar at The Signal this last broadcast, so maybe they would be interested in this.

Let me come back here tomorrow and post more.

FollowMal,
Do you think there is enough time to do letter writing to Oprah for the Anniversary, or would you recommend another time?

There is also a link to write in if you want to meet a hot celebrity. It might be fun to request a different cast member for several days in a row. There is an address to send in a video tape for this section.

Would you write in to meet Nathan?

If you decide to write to Oprah, make sure to mention all the wonderful things the fandom has done to show our love and appreciation, and also our sense of community,

here is a partial list just off the top of my head:

DVDs to the troops- money was raised to purchase the firefly dvds, and were donated to the troops (Navy specifically) I believe we were able to raise enough money to provide all the USO's? wtih a set, I know for a fact one made it to the Kittyhawk, my best friend reported back they were showing it while the ship was at sea.

June 23 Equality Now event raised over $60,000 www.cantstoptheserenity.com a worldwide event

Browncoat drive, browncoats collected browncoats which were donated to teh less fortunate

there was the sizeable donation raised for Equality Now in Nathan's name (the attempt to buy him the real browncoat)

AARG (Arial Ambulance rescue group) rescued a large prop from a scrap yard and are restoriing it.

www.niceguycomics.com browncoats helped him raise enough money to buy a new van

Individual browncoat groups have been doing dvd drives off and on donating sets to local libraries

also, lest we forget, www.donetheimpossible.com

Oprah is really big on charity stuff, and so are browncoats

Browncoats are the shiniest folks in the 'verse

Thank you Arcat81, perfect list.

I would only add the recent sales of Adam Baldwin's signed scripts for charity by the CA Browncoat group.

VE,
I don't know if we'd want to try to do it by the 'Versary or not. Not sure but she's already booked that short a distance into the future.

This is a good idea though. Someone has said that she's anti-violence and might not approve of the show.. well, Equality Now is anti-violence to women and a good cause. It's worth trying to bring to her attention.

The only problem I have with this is it looks as if what we're doing for the 'Versary is organizing a letter writing campaign around the Anniversary Job everyone is talking about. It might divide our attention to try two letter writing campaigns at once.

What do you think? Is this something better done right after the 'Versary, when everyone is still in letter writing mode and recovering from shindigs and such and turning their minds to serious stuff?

And.. oh yeah, I'd sure write in to promote Nathan! He'd make a wonderful guest.. she'd love him and also he has a movie ( White Noise: The Light) coming out in January.

Adam and Morena and Gina are working in tv shows this fall too, so getting them on to promote their shows and our charity is good. Particularly Adam with his recent contribution of his scripts. That went to something involving military families.. darn me for not being able to remember the name of the charity, but she might be interested in that.

Yep, you are right! I will be organizing my Shindig for the 'Versary, and I've already started my Thank You letter to Universal. I think it's best to keep that for the Anniversary Job.

i think doing it afterwards would be great. We can pick any date. We could start on Oct 1st, Oct 15th, or Oct 31st. It doesn't really need to have everyone writing on the same date. It's just that it would make a bigger impact.

Example:
Oct 15 - Requesting a show with Joss talking about the contributions of the Browncoats to his favorite charity.

I want to meet a hot celebrity:
Oct 16 -Nathan Fillion
Oct 17 - Summer Glau
Oct 18 - Adam Baldwin
Oct 19 - Morena Baccarin
Oct 20 - Alan Tudyk
Oct 21 - Gina Torres
Oct 22 - Sean Maher
Oct 23 - Jewel Staite
Oct 24 - Ron Glass

I'm sure that the shows are booked way in advance, but if there was a large request, I'm sure they would take notice and make arrangements. It might take awhile to get them on, but atleast there might be an e-mail reader or some of the producers that will take an interest.

So what do we do now? What do I need to do to make it a reality?
