Recently sites such as: http://tvlinks.50webs.com/index.html

that have been popping up across the web. Basically, so far as I can tell, what they're doing is entirely legal. As far as the law is concerned it is exactly the same as taking a video round to someone else's house.

Anyway, these sites bascially link to places where you can stream programs from online. It means you can watch stuff online.

Why don't we use this? Put the Firefly episodes or a few episodes online, get people hooked. Then ask them to go buy the episodes on DVD. It means we can show people the episodes without having to ask them to buy a copy/buying a copy ourselves. It also means we can probably reach a larger audience. Its a brilliant recruiting tool.

Whatchya think?

Yes, it would be an outstanding recruiting tool. However, if fans made streaming Firefly episodes available it would be a major copyright infringement. Firefly episodes are presently being sold online through different vendors, and Fox Home Entertainment would take a very dim view of any free online streaming of episodes... even though we have the best of intentions.

When pursuing guerilla marketing ideas, it's always best to steer away from anything that duplicates products which the studio is presently offering for sale. Also, this would go far beyond t-shirts and such, the episodes themselves are the source from which all else springs forth. They are the nest egg... you don't want to mess with the nest egg.

The shame of it is that offering one or two episodes of Firefly as a streaming online video probably would attract a lot of people, and then lead to actual DVD sales. But in this case, using actual full length episodes enters too far into copyright infringement land.

What we do have is iTunes, and other vendors, that offer Firefly episodes for only $1.99 each. That really is very inexpensive, and it still offers the extraordinary ease of obtaining the episodes online... plus, it's legal. Also, the money made shows that Firefly continues to be something people will pay money to see. And that is what studios pay attention to, and what helps to encourage the continuation of the 'Verse.

If you truly want to help spread the word with online downloads, it's very easy to make gifts of the ITunes episodes available. When we had the ITunes promotion I did that with several people and it was simple, you just follow the instructions and easy peasy.

$1.99 is so easy to spend on a soda, a coffee, etc... it was enjoyable to spend it on something I knew was going to hook someone else to the 'Verse and be fun and wonderful for them. Where else can you give someone something with the quality of a Firefly ep for $1.99!!??

As far as I can tell, the whole streaming of episodes is entirely legal.

The videos themselves are all hosted on sites such as YouTube and DailyMotion, those are big sites with a lot to lose by breaking the law, surely?

Meh. As of yet, none of those sites have uploaded Firefly, but when they do I reckon its going to create a boost to the number of people buying the DVDs, illegal or not. So all is good in my eyes.

Well I agree that if people get to see tjhe episodesor clips of them at least people get hooked, but I figure its better to hook people in with the fanmade trailers(check out another thread i bumped, winners of fanvid contest). The problem of uploading whole clips from Firefly, Fox can clamp down, and will ask youtube to remove those clips, or Youtube ,may do it themselves t oavoid legal problems...so...
