Let’s get Joss on Oprah. He’d be a great guest, and it would help spread the word about Firefly/Serenity to people that don’t watch sci-fi shows. When I first mentioned this idea, some were afraid that there was too much sex and violence in the ‘Verse. Oprah has had a lot of actors, actresses, writers, and directors as guests on her show that have been connected to movies and programs with more sex and violence than the “Movie that We Like.”

What she does like is sharing stories of people that are helping people. What better way to get others interested in the ‘Verse than by telling them about all of the things that the Browncoats have been doing especially like raising over $65,000 for Equality Now.

When I first posted the idea, I thought that it would be great to have everyone post on one day. I have reconsidered that part. I think it would jam up their already busy e-mail system. I have been sending in an e-mail request once a week. If you’re interested in this, it would be great to send 2 or 3 (or more) e-mails to them during the months of November and December.

Go to www.Oprah.com and click on “Inside Oprah.com” on the top left.
Drag down to “The Oprah Winfrey Show”
In the center there’s a link to “Be on the Show”
The column on the right says, “Regular Features”
Click on “We want your show ideas!”
It will ask you to sign on with a Username and Password. (I think they ask for - e-mail address, age, address, phone number, etc.)
Then fill in the box labeled “Tell your story.” Tell them why you think having Joss on Oprah would be a good idea. It has to be less than 2,000 characters (including spaces).

When I first posted, I got great comments from ArtCat81 and FollowMal.

If you decide to write to Oprah, make sure to mention all the wonderful things the fandom has done to show our love and appreciation, and also our sense of community, here is a partial list just off the top of my head:
1. DVDs to the troops - money was raised to purchase the Firefly DVDs, and they were donated to the troops (Navy specifically) I believe we were able to raise enough money to provide all the USO's? with a set, I know for a fact one made it to the Kittyhawk, my best friend reported back they were showing it while the ship was at sea.
2. June 23 - Equality Now event raised over $65,000 www.cantstoptheserenity.com a worldwide event
3. Browncoat drive - Browncoats collected browncoats which were donated to the less fortunate
4. There was the sizeable donation raised for Equality Now in Nathan's name (the attempt to buy him the real browncoat)
5. AARG (Arial Ambulance rescue group) rescued a large prop from a scrap yard and are restoring it.
6. www.niceguycomics.com Browncoats helped him raise enough money to buy a new van
7. Individual Browncoat groups have been doing DVD drives off and on donating sets to local libraries
8. Also, lest we forget, www.donetheimpossible.com

Oprah is really big on charity stuff, and so are Browncoats

Thank you Artcat81, perfect list.
I would only add the recent sales of Adam Baldwin's signed scripts for charity by the CA Browncoat group.

If you’d like to meet Joss or any of the BDHs, you can scroll down on the “Regular Features” list to the “Do you want to meet a hot celebrity?” You can fill one out for each person that you’d like to meet. You can fill in the form, and then if you’re serious about meeting one of them, you do need to send in a tape.

It might be fun to send a link to a favorite fanvid at YouTube. We might make a convert of the people that open the e-mails for the show.

Brilliant idea VerseExplorer - Oprah has a heart bigger than Texas when it comes to charities and fund-raising, and she is always looking for those 'different' stories' - especially when they are 'feel good' stories!

I will be sure to do just that!

Thank you for resurrecting this Verseexplorer!!
With all the hubbub lately I'd put this wonderful idea of yours on the backburner.. now it's time to bring it to the forefront.

I think it's a good idea to do it in littles too, if we all wrote the same day it'd clog up their inbox and not endear us to them, I'll bet. This is better... with a steady stream of them coming in requesting Joss on there they surely must notice.
I'll share this with the Appreciatin' Nathan crew over on the other board, too. They will want to put in Nathan for the "hot celebrity" to meet. With "White Noiser" (giggle!) coming out in January and his upcoming stint on "Lost" under his belt prior to Christmas, that may be interesting to the Oprah folks too.

But!....

Joss is the most important person to get on there, because I think once their producers and Oprah find out about Equality Now and all the charity work that Browncoats have done, they'll be interested. And Oprah seems to like fightin' stories.. the kind where the little guy fights for recognition and for fairness. Browncoats are good at both of those.

I'll be writing frequently and we'll spread this around with the Browncoat Signal Corps.

YAY for a wonderful guerilla marketing idea!

"You hold. Hold 'til I get back." Mal

Ask me how to join the Appreciatin' Nathan Crew.

On the picture thread MRSELLARS added this story about his actions after Katrina hit. I asked if I could share his story in case anyone wanted to add it to their note to Oprah about all of the charitable acts of Browncoats.

Quote:

MRSELLARS wrote:
Since we still seem to be tossing pics up, here I am back in NOLA post-Katrina, working on a cleanup crew at a cemetery. Clothes weren't quite so shiny.

It was, in a word, awful... Another author and I were on tour together when the levee broke and we watched it on CNN--horrified not only due to the scope of the disaster, but also because we have several friends living there.

We ran an auction that raised 10K+, then loaded my truck with physical donations (water, food, clothing, etc) and drove down from STL. Spent 10 days doing cleanup, then returned home terribly depressed by everything we witnessed.

Fortunately, the city is coming back. Slowly, but it's happening...

When I asked if we could use his story, he added:

Well certainly. I'd be happy to give you any details you might need.

If you've written to Oprah, you might want to add something new next time. I think the Good Works campaign is a great way to show how our Browncoat community is helping to develop the arts thanks to FollowMal and her friends. If you need more information about the campaign, here's the link.

Isn't it about time we did a BSC post about this?
Next week after Thanksgiving?
How does that sound? I'm afraid most of our BSC members will be gone home for visits.. so next week may be pretty quiet.

I think the week after would be better.

I'd need you to write it up and submit it to me, via email. I think you have my email addy.

I finally got around to listening to the commentary on "Done the Impossible." About half way through, one of the producers had a great idea. He said we should write into Oprah and tell her about what a group of Browncoats have done.

It takes so little time, and it costs nothing. If you've written one note, another one would be helpful. Ask to see Joss on Oprah, ask to meet one of the BDHs, and/or tell her about "Done the Impossible." Let's get the word out to those that don't know about the 'Verse.

I just read on Whedonesque that Gina Torres is in Chris Rock's new movie: I Think I Love My Wife. Oprah loves Chris Rock, so this would be a great time to ask to have Gina Torres on the show. It would be great to add that you know about Gina because you are a HUGE Firefly fan.

The movie does look good. You can check out the trailer at:

Thanks, FollowMal,
No problem. I've been a bit crazed with the holidays, too. Thanks for remembering to do it now. I am still writing about every other week. I figure sometime someone will take notice.

I was pleased to see that DevonNite started a thread about writing Oprah about the BDHs that showed up at the BBB (Browncoat Backup Bash) in Burbank when Flan 2 was canceled. (It's at http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=25913 if you want to check it out.) ZZetta13 wrote a letter, too. I do believe it's the volume of letters that will get us noticed.

I feel that the Browncoat community is something that would help to promote Firefly/Serenity. Although, I really would like everyone to know about Joss Whedon and his great writing ability, all of the BDHs and how committed they are to the show, and how charitable the Browncoats are.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello all,

I'm not sure sending Joss to appear on Oprah is a good idea.

I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise, but I'll never forget what she did to him when Interview with a Vampire came out. She practically put him on trial in front of the world. To this day I think she's the reason he didn't make a sequel. (And while I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise, I am a fan of Interview with a Vampire.)

(Does anyone else remember this appearance?)

Well, anyhow, Oprah can be a force for good, but she can also be an unyielding force for evil. I'd hate to see Joss come out on the wrong end of that.

AnthonyT, I can understand your feelings. I just think that Joss could certainly handle a conversation with Oprah on any topic. I'm not a Tom Cruise fan either. I personally think that Joss is far more witty and intelligent, and that he could handle anything that would come up in the interview. He is the one that would have the final decision. If he didn't want to do it, he can always turn down the invitation to appear. I just think that we should make her aware of how great he is.

If you still don't think that Joss would be a good guest, how about one of the BDHs? I think any of them would be great especially with some of the new projects that they have coming in the future. You can write to ask to meet one of them.

Finally, I do believe that writing to her about the Browncoat community is a great way to let other know about the 'Verse. Even if you don't want to write to get Joss on Oprah, consider telling her about all of the charities that Browncoats have been involved in the past.

I've been starting a lot smaller, trying to work Firefly into any conversation.

"You ever heard of Firefly?"
"You like westerns?"
"Tired of too-distant, too-chrome and plastic SciFi with cheezy latex aliens?"
"You want a character driven drama/comedy/action-adventure/with a story line that actually builds from one episode to the next and really goes somewhere?

Phew!

and on and on...all while wearing my new Jayne hat :)

SpaceGirl,
I am still sending in e-mail notes, and I have heard from others that have also. Sending a copy of "Done the Impossible" is a great idea, but I'm not sure of where to send it. There are different mailbox numbers for different shows. I wouldn't want it to be set aside and not viewed. Since I can't make any guarantees, I wouldn't want to ask anyone to send it, but if someone did, you never know it might be viewed.

I just sent this to opra i'm not the best writer but what the heck.

"The story of Joss Wheton and the browncoats.
Firefly a series joss created that touched the lives of many of its viewers and spawned the browncoat fan empire. Despite being canceled after a single season became so popular that a major movie, serenity was created.
This is remarkable in itself but firefly fans have gone far beyond simple fans and have also suported several important charities like Equality Now (equil rights for women of the world) to the tune of thousands of dollers ($60,000 I understand so far)
Joss Wheton and the browncoats are by definition heroes worthy of recognition.
Brent

P.S. firefly was not given a fair chance at fox. it was rumored that some of fox's execs didnt get it, as a result the series wasnt advertized well, was shown out of order, and was prempted twice I understand, but in all fairness they did allow joss to take the show with him.
this is a people's show in the fronteers out space with western and chinese influences with a rich world and deep charactors that resonate with the viewer.
this was a show I could see opra being part of, it reminded me of the color purple.
