After much debate and pondering and some outside influence (you know who you are), I've started a new thread since the other is a bit too large for dial-up to download well.

Also....many of you should be pleased to note I have changed the title on the old thread to 'For All FF Fans' from it's previous and inflamatory (but did get a lot of response!!!) title 'For serious FF fans only', which of course we all are.

However. Do not let this lull some of you into a false sense of security. I refuse to change the title to 'Organize', just to keep those who do not spell proper english (Americans) happy. I do have my bounderies!

So keep the bleedin idea's flowing. Spectacular stuff!!!

for historic purposes here is the link to the old thread

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=20&t=28587

fondest regards to all,
Anduine (Sean)

Guerilla marketing promotions always get an extra boost when they can be tied to something new happening in the 'verse.

Since we have our super shiny special edition of Serenity coming out this Summer, it's not too early to start brainstorming some ways to help make the most of this.

Naturally there will be a ton of Browncoats buying this set, and we'll be spreading the word to the folks we know, but let's start giving some thought to making the release even more of an event.

Just gettin' the ball rolling for y'all... I'll toss in some more ideas after I've had my thinking cap on for a spell.

Please feel free anyone to contribute any positive thoughts or suggestions.

11th hour - I have had a few more ideas to tie in with the special edition release.
1) If someone with the tech savvy could create us some myspace layouts especially for the SE release that'd be shiny!
2) Also, these same afformentioned people could make us all some avatars/sigs/banners for the SE release... which brings up my next question. How many people here use their Serenity/FF banners on ALL of the sites they go to? Is that considered poor internet ettiquite? I myself am a member on about 10 boards and wouldn't mind using the FF banners on all of them. Might get some new people asking some questions.
3) Another thing to keep in mind with trying to convert people over to our fandom is that some people that might not want to watch the movie or the series, might not mind listening to the music! If you think someone might be a fan of the music style you might be able to draw them in that way!
4) Another cool option could be if someone could create a tshirt graphic for the SE release, people that have the resources could buy some of those inkjet iron-on transfers and make their own tshirts! I know I'd sport one!

What you thinks?

Hey 11th,

There's also the Firefly / Serenity DVD's going up on the shuttle to the space station. Although I think the Special Edition release is probably the better event to plan a campaign around.

Excellent idea! Ever since Nathan started his MySpace site, giganimous numbers of folks have signed up to be part of his friends list. Jewel has a MySpace site too with lots o' friends, so we have two wonderful crew members, with great word spreadin' potential, on MySpace. Perhaps they could be asked, politely, to give a shout-out on their sites to let folks know about the Serenity SE MySpace site, once it's created of course. A lot of traffic and interest could be generated that way.

I know there are free online custom templates for MySpace, perhaps one of those could be tweaked a bit for the Serenity SE DVD site. Or if there's some brave, as you say,"tech savvy" soul who would be willing to put one together, this could be a big boost for promoting the 'verse!

Folks on the boards are always up to the task of creating avatars and such for FF/S. I'm sure there would be some here who could create some cool promotional images.

As to posting on outside forums, I would like to mention that when the banners get too large they might begin to become a bit heavy handed on sites that aren't specifically related to the 'verse. Remember, often less is more.

For those who making avatars and banners is not their strong point, then we can have some ready made ones available for anyone to use. Perhaps I could contribute something myself...

Another great suggestion. The soundtracks of the show and the movie are very enjoyable to listen to. I wonder if folks who work in some business, or somewhere at school, that plays music in the background could be allowed to pop in a Firefly or Serenity CD? Then new folks could hear it, hopefully really like it and get curious and ask about the music... then spread the word!

Wow, you're on a roll!

T-shirt graphics are a very cool way to promote the SE... fans can be walking (and talking) billboards. As we get closer to the release date, I'll be updating several of my guerilla marketing posters to promote the DVD. As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to download the art and use it to spread the word.

I've also been working on a new project that could allow an expanded avenue for fans to do promotional work. But it's still in the planning stages, so more info later...

Hey, the more events to promote the DVDs the merrier!

The shuttle/space station event is so ultra cool... makes me tingly all over. This is definitely something to celebrate and shout about, just like the upcoming SE release.

As has been pointed out on the other thread, there are most likely fans already who have been making plans for certain promotional activities. So instead of inadvertently duplicating efforts, or worse yet, accidently conflicting, we should first find out about any promotional activities which are already in motion. So much more can be accomplished by joining forces.

Sounds like a good first step is to organize the website which brings together all the current FF/S promotional and fan activities. Then people can be informed, stay current, and pool their resources.

I haven't been able to keep up with everything myself, but I'm thinking that the shuttle/space station event probably has people who are working on something for it. So it would be good for interested folks to look into this and help give it a boost.

The release of the Serenity SE DVD can have several different promotional activities tied to it. The more varied the promotion, the better it will reach out to new people. It's always good to keep in mind on how to reach people who don't frequent all the regular places that we do. There's plenty of "offline" folks who would love Firefly and Serenity if they knew about it.

One of the most surprising things I discovered early on happened at Dragon*Con 2004. There were several Firefly fans who participated in a costume contest. They did a great job! Very authentic recreations of the crew. I took a lot of photos and then started talking to them. I was amazed to find out that they NEVER participated in message boards! Here were obviously big fans of Firefly who had no knowledge of this message board life we know.

So if those big fans were out of the news loop, can you imagine how many others are unaware of what's going on with the fanbase?

They're out there. Current out-of-the-loop fans, and fans yet-to-be. Gotta find 'em. Gotta get the word out.

Here's one ~

Also, there are a few more pics of this great group in my Dragon*Con 2004 photo album... along with lots of other fun pics from that legendary convention.

(Note: The good lookin' guy on the far left in the above photo is Matty... Jewel's hubby!)

Here's the link to the album, just click on the "Photos" tab. Watching it in slide show mode displays the pics larger, along with my droll captions... heh...

Oh I'm sure there are all kinds of FF/S themed bumper stickers around. Many of them were on Cafe Press, but they might have been pulled since the big Universal legal crack down.

There might be some officially licensed bumper stickers, but I'm not positive about that. It would be good to create some though to promote the upcoming SE Serenity DVD. If there aren't any official bumper stickers available, folks may have to create homemade ones (not Cafe Press) in order to avoid getting jumped on by Universal's legal department. I am looking into ways for fans to create items in an official way. I'll post more info on this as it becomes available.

Keep the ideas coming!

I hate to step off subject, but as an American I take offense. Firefly was an American show so not only should you adopt American English spellings, you should start wearing white tube socks, chewing lots of gum, eating lots of hamburgers, and talk loud in public locations.

Ok. Went out and bought some tube socks and chewing gum and practising sayin y'all.
So havent been through here the last couple.

But here's an update. Looks like the top 2 projects (meaning most discussed) aside from ongoing efforts that we can throw ourselves behind are:

(1) Newsletter-either electronic or hardcopy or both

(2) Blog-site or Website that can enhance the other sites out there.

(3) Efforts that are ongoing to aid.

A core group of sorts has been initially formed (and I mean initially) and I've responded to those who have expressed solid enthusiasm and the offer to help. IF I'VE MISSED ANYONE PLEASE PM ME!!

In other words if I haven't sent you a PM with my email and/or you havent responded back, please let me know so I can include you on the list.

We will be having an 'official' chat discussion within the next week. A temporary leader will be picked for each of the 3 groups or sub-groups listed above.
These groups will be able to discuss between themselves off-line to begin to develop a workable plan and strategy.
Veterans will be enlisted to act either in an advisory or working capacity (so we're not going after something already being done and help us to understand existing politics).

Once a workable and reviewed plan is complete...we'll take it to the next steps.

Really good idea's and discussion from all this. Now let's 'start doin'.

Ok, I can't take credit for this one. One of my old boss's and I did it as cheap local advertising a couple years ago (he suggested it).

He got a bucket of side-walk chalk and we went around in the wee hours of the morning creating a little bit of art adverting our stuff. We targeted side-walks around the local universities and bus stops.

Just a thought for those that have an extra $5 and some (or more) artistic talent. That and not an early morning or insomnia

Yup , 11th , there are some really good folk working to commemorate the Shuttle ascent and ISS DVD's...

A stealthy Browncoat Astronaut is on our side...

The INDEPENDENT SPACEBORNE FORCES have enlisted Film / Video Game Composer Austin Wintory to create New Browncoat Music especially to commemorate the Shuttle /ISS event , plus we have a flight "to the Edge" scheduled for June 2nd to kick off 2007's 'Summer of SERENITY' !

We are tentatively scheduling a flight trial of a particular airship design for the window of September 20th-30th , 2007 !

...Browncoat payloads will also be aboard this experimental flight in what is also a mature program !

We intend to raise the profile of Browncoats to new heights ALL SUMMER LONG in our endeavor , which we have titled ,
" Browncoats Rising !"

11th , we want an art piece from you to ride along June 2nd !, and on the subsequent flights , also . No pressure , though , just has to be fun !

Small is fine , as weight is a big consideration on these missions...

We would be so gorramn proud if you'd join us for this !

Also , Bless His Soul , B!X is working on a website , called 'Breaking Atmo' , Opening Soon !

Another great way to promote the DVD release if you've a local pub or bar you and friends attend.

Here in Chicago I've what we call a local and friends and I generally gather there a few times a week for a few pints an general discussion. Over time since we're regulars we've gotten to know staff and owners quite a bit.

Last year we asked the owner to show Serenity on the regular pub 'movie night' on Thursday. Which he did gladly for us. Quite a few of the regulars really enjoyed it and I got to join a lot of side conversations and direct them to the FF series.

This year I've already talked to him about doing it again, and I'll get some table tents and what not (I'm a printer by trade) to inform those watching about different websites, etc., they can go to for more info on the movie, series, what not.

I'll post the event on a few web threads when we pick the date.

So if youre like myself and go out with a few friends for a social now and then and have a local, or establish a local, get to know the owner (theyre generally glad of your patronage if you frequent the place), and ask for a movie night and or to pop it on their DVD player for one. Usually if there's no sports or other they'll oblige.

You can then promote the event within the bar (posters, simple flyers...), get the local browncoats to attend and support. It usually makes a big hit with the owners if they get the patronage.

The biggest benefit is that people who have never seen or heard of Serenity or FF will get some interest and may join ranks. Plus it's just good fun.

Just a good idea that's been tried and tested.

I digg the idea but I think it could stand to get some folk in trouble. I guess it would depend on the laws in your area but that could be looked upon as vandalism, washable or not.

But you did give me a great idea... might be a little far-fetched but it's worth throwing out there. I came across this guy on the net a while back, he does some AMAZING forced persepctive chalk drawings, usually on city streats! These drawings are simply incredible! I think he's even done something for a Chrysler commercial recently.

Checkout this page for more of his stuff http://users.skynet.be/J.Beever/pave.htm

His name is Julian Beever. He's an English artist that has traveled around the world making these drawings.
Anyway, it makes me wonder if this guy is a Serenity fan... or if he can be converted! How cool would that be to see Serenity flying around downtown! I wonder with all our resources in thsi community if someone knows how to find this person?

That guy's good! But, getting him to do something would probably be prohibitively expense

Regarding the legal aspects, don't know. Definitely something to check out.

But, perhaps if it was a class project. Art classes regularly let there students do there own thing. I remember getting out of doing a couple "required" things when I was in high-school b/c the teacher liked what I was doing/suggested. And I wasn't the only one that got this privilege.

This would also get ride of the stealth night thing on top of getting credit for it! If a cop did happen on students and it was illegal in-front of the school I doubt anything would happen. More likely the teacher would get a taking to. That is if chalk was used. Paint would most likely cause a ruckus

I guess it's different living in different places. I just don't want anyone to get in trouble and Blame the Firefly crowd for it! If students were to do it at their school it would be fine as long as they had school permission.
Again, I just gotta say, if you don't own the property or have the owners permission, it's considered vandalism. It's been said before and I agree... the firefly fans need TONS of positive press, and none negative.
As far as the street artist... if we could track down an email address and start some communication, tell him about the fans story and everything we are trying to do... you never know, he might do it for free. He might not, but who knows unless we make the effort to find out?

Very true. But, I think that it might be different for public property. Though as you say, different location == different laws.

Are there any lawyers or city office people about?

Thought I'd repost to remind everyone since there's some questions. Just a quick update.

Wolf and Red and I plan on checking out a chat solution tomorrow to see how it works. Ease of use, etc. Once we're satisfied, everyone that's responded (and I havent missed) will get an email outlining efforts and initial discussion points for a scheduled chat. We'll give it a day or two so I can collect any feedback and then we'll send out an email with the chat site, time, an such.

I should have reposted this yesterday, but was watching the DVD of Serenity.
