In honor of the Serenity movie 'versary, and just cuz I can't seem to help myself, here's some nifty new ammo for fighting our good fight...

Guerilla Marketing Bookmarks!

These lil' darlin's are geared just for promoting the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD, because we heard from Mr. Joss Boss hisownself that healthy sales of this DVD would have a positive influence on Universal's decision for future incarnations of the 'Verse. It's a matter of numbers and profits now. Movie studios have a tendency to say "yes" to money, so let's make it worth their while.

So what difference could some bookmarks make you ask? Well, not as much as perhaps a national commercial advertising campaign, but since we don't have the budget for that, we'll find other ways. Never underestimate the power of many devoted fans keeping the faith and finding new fans person by person... and remember, each excited new fan who discovers the 'Verse is inspired to spread the word too. So, every new fan actually means several more potential new fans. It's math, and it works. How else has the Firefly DVD been selling all this time? It doesn't get advertised at all, unless it's an article about how well it's been selling! It's word of mouth, and it keeps growing.

Hey, we got mouths, and computers, and access to copy machines... so let's keep usin' them.

Guerilla marketing bookmarks are great tools because they are small, yet still quite effective at communicating. The pluses are you can get 5 of them from a letter size page, which muliplies the word spreadin' power. Also, they are something useable, and can be placed where people would find them handy:

• Schools
• Libraries
• Book Stores
• Coffee Houses
• Comic Book Shops
• and more, use your imagination!

People often need something to mark a place in what they're reading or writing, or maybe just need a piece of paper to make a note. These are eye catching and grabable, and once people have them they're bound to read them. The message will sink in!

There are two different bookmark page designs, each fits on a regular letter size page, and each can make 5 bookmarks. The first set is designed to be more visual much like the guerilla marketing posters. The other set is more text oriented, and has 5 bookmarks which feature several glowing reviews of the Serenity CE DVD, paired with a blurb at the base showing the recent acting credits of Nathan, Summer, Adam and Alan. The theory being that for people who aren't familiar with the cast, they would be impressed with a roster of their accomplishments. This could be additionally persuasive for new folk to check out the DVD.

These new bookmarks are available on my guerilla marketing website (link below, and in my signature line), but here's a preview now:

Guerilla Marketing Posters for Firefly and Serenity ~
http://the11thhour.home.att.net

The bookmarks can be used three different ways: One sided photocopies using either the all graphic design, or the "reviews" design. Or, if you're feeling especially ambitious, do two sided photocopies for bookmarks that have the graphics on one side and the reviews on the reverse! Each page has little guide marks at the top and bottom to show where to cut them into five equal strips. A paper cutter is recommended to speed up the slicing process, and, as with the posters, using colored paper when making photocopies will really help give the bookmarks more impact!

So if you're itching to do something extra to support the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD, and help bring us closer to SEQUELS, then please feel free to make some of these nifty bookmarks. You can carry some with you, and then leave them around when you see good guerilla marketing opportunities... like Johnny Appleseed leaving them to sprout new fans.

It feels great to spread the word to new people. The new fans who discover Firefly/Serenity will be so glad to find out why people can fall so hard in love with the 'Verse. There are plenty of people out there who are Browncoats, and don't know it yet.

Yer Art Companion,

A bump to the thread, with some examples of what the bookmarks can look like when photocopied on color paper and then separated ~

I've found that the "neon" types of color paper works especially well because of their brightness, good contrast and eye catching factor. Regular color paper works great too, just make sure the color isn't too dark or else it's hard to see the design.

Give it a try!

Appreciate the positive response.

This thread is on the quiet side, which makes me wonder...

Have fans become disillusioned and don't think guerilla marketing has any effect?

I know bookmarks aren't the magic bullet that will instantly skyrocket the DVD sales... but I've seen the guerilla marketing posters and mini posters get peoples' attention. Bookmarks are subtle, but perhaps that's what will make them effective.

People are inundated with flashy big advertisements all day long, and we often zone out just to keep from suffering information overload.

But the bookmarks are something to hold in the hand, up close and draw a more quiet, direct attention. Plus they are made to be items that people use when they're taking a break to read a book, have some coffee, or do some writing. That's a great time to make a quiet, direct connection with someone when their mind is in a state that can focus better on the communication.

We have new fans joining up quite frequently. So often they are highly motivated to "do something" to help keep supporting the 'Verse and get us closer to another movie, mini series, direct to DVD... whatever! If they've never tried guerilla marketing before they might not realize that it can be very effective, and it feels great to take all that energy of loving FF/S and turn it into spreading the word. I hope the new folk, along with us vets, will give these bookmarks a try.

Thank you. I always work hard to represent FF/S, and that gorgeous cast, in their awesomeness as best I can. (That sentence was a bit awkward, but the feelings were sincere... heh...)

I hope not! I still walk around with your guerilla marketing pictures on my shirt. And I carry stickers from our local group and hand them out to anyone who's interested -- and some who aren't.
Guerilla marketing is about the only reliable way we have to reach people who aren't already acquaintances. Now that I've told all my friends, who else am I going to tell?
Your artwork is a fabulous way to start a conversation with someone. It's impressive in its own right -- and then you get to tell the story behind it.

Thanks for posting that!

Over the years I've heard wonderful stories from folks in regard to how the guerilla marketing posters have spread the word. I also always carry a batch of mini-posters with me ready to give out to folks I talk about Firefly and Serenity to. When someone can take a mini poster away with them, it really helps to remind them to check out the DVDs.

I know that the visitor count on my guerilla marketing website really jumped when I announced the bookmarks, yet the threads stayed kinda quiet. So it could be a matter of people going to the site and downloading them, they're just not posting about it.

Even as individuals, we can each make a real difference in spreading the word. If each fan got one person to buy a DVD, that would double the fan base right there! Individual guerilla marketing may take time, but it keeps building. Folks also need to remember that every person who becomes a new fan will want to spread the word too. So every new fan represents several more.

I even still use a canvas bag from my own Cafe Press that has Serenity designs on it. This bag is nearly 2 years old, but it's still in great shape and I use it when I go to the market. Often people will look at the designs and ask me about them... heh heh... that's my cue to talk up Serenity and Firefly! I then follow that by giving them a mini-poster or art gallery card to help them remember to look into the DVD later.

Muahahahahaha... I'm always ready to convert folk, and it's fun!

That would be shiny.

They also would be great to use at libraries where there's lot of opportunities for the bookmarks. They can be left out for people to use, or placed in books that are about subjects that are likely to attract people who would enjoy Firefly and Serenity.

Or people can just carry a batch with them and be ready to leave them in strategically useful places, or give them to people that one has been talking to about the 'Verse.

It feels great to guerilla market.

Hopefully the extra visibility will catch more attention.

Also, thought it might be fun for folks to see what the guerilla marketing posters can do "out there in the world". Here's a pic that was posted on FFF.net a while ago...

It's what I do.

Glad to hear you'll be making use of the bookmarks. As to "tipping point", I heartily agree. It's a matter of critical mass and heat, and everytime a new fan discovers the 'Verse, that's another person who'll spread the word.

Comes down to math. Shiny math.

Hiya, miz 'leventh, what funny coincidence! I just stopped by the board since, well, not very often these days, we'll just sheepishly put it that way, and here I get to see the pic I took a coupla years ago! Wow, I guess it really has been that long.

It always tickles me that you like that shot; your art is magnificent stuff to use for such purpose, because it's crisp and striking and all crunchy like icicles are when you break one off the barn roof and chew on it. Or so.

I remember that damp and foggy morning in Nashville when I put those posters up; big can o' spray adhesive and they went right on the big power box at the traffic light at a very busy intersection in the university area where I live. It was fun to drive by it and see folks looking at it. Man, those were the days: the movie was about to open, and we were all legendary. Guess we are still.

Thing I got out of guerilla marketing was that it was just fun. Just fun, which is worthwhile for its own sake. A quick and easy cheap thrill that gives you a good feeling for hours! And relatively communicable to boot!

Oh, also wanted to tell you, miz 'leventh, that it's great to have gotten to 'meet' you by seeing you on the Done the Impossible DVD thing (which is very cool itself). Keep up the great work and thanks for letting us do fun things with your art! (wait, that didn't sound right, but I'm not sure how to repair it...)

Awesome 11th! Thank you. You rock.

I haven't been by FFF in awhile, but glad I stopped in. I'm a big library user, I like to have bookmarks to leave tucked inside larger books for the next person to find. Or even in some dvd cases... the trick is they shouldn't be obvious to the staff checking materials in but the next library patron will find.

These will be great for a local convention we have next spring too.

We all want to keep the signal going but you're the one that gives us the materials, 11th! XIE XIE!

ADDED TIP: For single-sided (image-heavy) bookmarks, overhead transparency sheets work well too. Be sure that the kind you are printing can go through your printer or copier (the "wrong" ones can melt if not matched to the machine right). They make thick, durable bookmarks that look "space-y" or "sci-fi-y."

You got your marching orders- GO GET 'EM 'COATS!

Zipply,

So glad you moseyed on by and saw this thread. Yep, that shiny pic of your guerilla marketing genius does my heart good. It conjures the spirit of our fandom, fan made posters and fan powered word spreadin'... we Browncoats make our own way outside of the high falutin' mainstream advertising.

(I would have given you photo credit, but I lost some of my record keeping in the great hard drive disaster of '05.)

Damn, that's pretty... and right poetical too.

Beautifully stated, romantical even.

That's the spirit of guerilla marketing right there. Ain't nothing feels quite like it, and a person has to do it to really "get it". I've had me some mighty fine "midnight adventures" puttin' up my own posters... it's truly makes one feel like one of our shiny crew. We don't need no big budget, thank you very much... we can make our own kinda advertising. (Just don't get caught doin' it... heh... )

Ah, the Done the Impossible DVD... yes, t'was fun to be a part of, though I was not at my best at the time. Interviews were done at Dragon*Con '05 I believe, and I was dealing with a toothache that had literally manifested on my flight to Atlanta! Luckily an especially shiny Browncoat had some "Spanish pain relievers" to help take the worst of the pain away.

Btw, there's some Easter Egg thing on the DVD that taps into a more extended bit with me. I haven't watched it yet, but some of it was shown at the Browncoat Back-up Bash last year. I really should check it out, who knows what I was saying under the influence of toothache, lack of sleep and "Spanish pain killers"...

Knowin' that folks are using the posters makes the work worthwhile, and it's great to know y'all are having fun with them. Just, if'n you're gonna have a lot of fun with them, make sure they aren't so crinkly that no one can read 'em...

I'm still telling folks about the bookmarks, 11th, and suggested a new use just the other day.

A friend said that we should Target groups that would be inspired by Serenity, such as Libertarians (There's a comparison of Libbies and Mal in "Serenity Found"). So I told her, "why not target special interest books at the Library and bookstores, inserting Serenity Bookmarks in them?" Put Bookmarks in books about politics, spacecraft, westerns, general sci/fi, etc. You don't need to "push" folks into watching Serenifly; sometimes a nudge is all it takes.

I will be purchasing some colored paper (maybe like, thick, or hard paper even..?) and inserting these in a bunch of books at the library.

Genius. The only guerilla marketing I've done in the past is moving the Firefly DVDs so that there was one in front of EVERY OTHER DVD on the shelf. I also work in radio, and - while my audience is small - I suggested Serenity as a good purchase...Now it's my turn to help even more. Thanks for the oppurtunity! I love to help a good cause!

No it's not your computer... and thank you for letting me know the links weren't working.

The problem was connected to a huge overhaul I just did to the site. I've been making Firefly/Serenity stuff for a while now, and the files were kinda all over the place (I have multiple AT&T locations). So I went through everything and did a big purge of files that were no longer needed (like FF/S guerilla marketing posters I did in Portuguese, French, German, etc. for marathons taking place in other countries last year... yeah, stuff like that... heh).

So I deleted great swaths of files and then moved almost all the guerilla marketing files to a more centralized location. It's a job... mostly due to the thumbnail/view/print versions of each one. Well even though I was trying to be very careful, looks like a couple of links didn't get updated. Sorry about that!

I definitely don't want to make it harder for people to guerilla market. Heck, I get all tingly when folks get enthusiastic and want to give it a whirl... so I want the posters to always be available.

The links are corrected now, so download to your heart's content... and thanks.

Another great suggestion TD! There's definitely crossover potential by placing the bookmarks in books that have topics that somehow tie in to the 'Verse.

Firefly/Serenity is such a rich canvas there are a lot of worlds it touches upon... even costume designing! Use your imagination folks, there's LOTS of opportunities out there to spread the word.

Thanks for fixing the little glitch, 11th!

Now I think there actually might be a problem with my computer this time - I click on "bookmarks for printing" and the page opens, but the picture doesn't show up and won't let me "show picture." Anything I can do?

I just printed off the ones from "bookmarks for viewing" and they come out finr, but a little fuzzy - I assume that the only difference is that the printing ones are a little higher resolution...?

Any suggestions? If not, I could always just use the viewing ones :)

Thanks again,

My first suggestion would be to try the function "Save As Target", which people have mentioned will download the file when the browser isn't displaying the file. This suggestion applies to Windows system though, so I'm kind of assuming that's the OS you're working with. I use a Mac so I'm not familiar with more ways to solve the problem when using Windows.

If this suggestion doesn't help, perhaps some computer whiz knows another approach. But please check back and report what happens.

Yes, the only difference in the files is the resolution. It's really best to use the print quality files, especially for the "reviews" bookmarks which have a lot of smaller text on them. There has to be a simple solution for this, we'll figure it out... and then you can post again... and that time it will be about using the bookmarks!

And, as usual, they're beautiful.

Thank you. I always work hard to represent FF/S, and that gorgeous cast, in their awesomeness as best I can. (That sentence was a bit awkward, but the feelings were sincere... heh...)

oooh

I have some double-sided glossy paper, like they print pamphlets on. That would be GREAT for this! :D

A gentle nudge to the thread to boost it back...

Every day is a good day to guerilla market Firefly and Serenity! Bring the word to new folk so they can discover the awesomeness of the 'Verse. They might be hesitant at first, after all we're all bombarded with messages of "try this" all day, but the 'Verse is one of those things that's so worth the tryin'.

Take a mosey over to my Firefly and Serenity guerilla marketing website (link in my signature block) and download a poster, bookmark, mini-poster, or two, or three... or, collect 'em all! They're much easier than pie to make. You already have a computer and Internet connection, or else you couldn't be reading this! Then just download the files, they're black and white small files and get to you lickety split. Then just print out an original, and photocopy like you mean it!

There, now you have a bunch of nifty guerilla marketing ammo to put extra power behind your word bringin'! It always help to give someone a bookmark or mini poster to help remind them to check out the DVDs. Plus when you're out there in the world and have some of these beauties with you, they can be placed in spots you think will get attention. Check out the website, lots of ideas there!

Remember each DVD sold and new fan made puts more strength behind the argument to revive Firefly/Serenity! Plus, guerilla marketing is awesome fun.

Boosting the thread back on the radar...

Even during the quiet times, it's always a good time to spread the word of the 'Verse. Guerilla marketing isn't just for a special release or event, it's something to find a way to do at any good opportunity.

Download the mini-poster sheets or bookmarks to create some handy, and oh so portable, guerilla marketing items to carry with you. They're so great to give to someone when the subject of Firefly/Serenity happens to come up. (You do know how to make sure it comes up, don't you?)

It's always great to be able to give someone a mini-poster or bookmark to help them remember to check out the DVDs. Plus, you can leave them here and there while you're out and about in the world. Place them like seeds ready to be discovered and grow more fans. (You know, if the 'Verse wasn't so awesome and cool, this kind of advice would have a spooky side to it!)

Anyhoo... just sayin' that guerilla marketing is an ongoing quest. The way to revive interest in more of the 'Verse for some studio is to keep building the audience and keeping the DVDs strong. We hold 'till Mal gets back.
