The October 26th episode of Castle was a giddy slice of heaven for all the fans of Firefly. Seeing Nathan dressed in his classic Malcolm Reynolds duds, swirlin' that browncoat and doing some mighty fine pistol twirlin' to a music video beat, warmed the heart and lifted our weary Firefly-starved souls. The show even added Fireflyesque music "twangs" when Castle/Nathan/Cappy made his exuberant entrance... pistol drawn and striking a Mal pose right out of our beloved Firefly.

The "excuse" of a Halloween costume was a great idea so Nathan could play Mal again... even for pretend. He even kept the gear on for a while for the first part of the show... and we got to drink in every moment.

So, wanna be able to watch these awesome scenes over and over AND give a vote of support for Nathan and Firefly?

(If you're not saying "yes", you're either a gorram Alliance spy or have somehow died inside... )

Anyway, back to the guerilla marketing notion...

This episode of Castle, "Vampire Weekend", is available for individual purchase on iTunes! For only $2.99 you can make a solid statement that you'll put money behind Nathan's popularity as a lead actor AND that you'll pay coin to see him any way you can in some new form of Firefly! Sure you can watch the ep free on Hulu, and the studio/network takes that somewhat into account, but paying actual money speaks a whole lot louder. (Which might be why Hulu will eventually become a pay for service in the future.)

Money will always make the difference to a studio. Actors and projects become desirable when the promise of profit is there. So whenever an opportunity comes around where the fans can make a statement that speaks to a studio, then we need to make use of that opportunity. It would be so cool to see this episode of Castle rise in the sales ranks of iTunes, and much higher than the regular eps. Then the question of, "Gee, why is THIS particular episode so much more popular?" begs to be answered... heh...

If you don't already have iTunes, it can be downloaded from the Apple website for FREE. The program is available for both Mac and Windows platforms.

'Scuse me now... I'm gonna rewatch some of that episode now. Seeing Nathan enjoying being in his Mal duds just never gets old... *sigh*

Another Guerilla Marketing ploy, to either do in lieu of the Itune Job, or in tandem, would be to write ABC and let them know what a great Episode it was, and WHY! feedback@abc.com is the e-mail, I believe.

Writing to ABC praising Nathan will certainly do good things for him as the lead in Castle. The only thing is that it won't do as much for the Firefly part of this guerilla marketing notion. ABC has no connection to Firefly or Serenity, so that part doesn't show up on their radar. The show they have a vested interest in is Castle.

That said, I'm sure that ABC would like to hear that Nathan has a loyal following... especially since the last news we heard was that Castle hadn't been confirmed for renewal yet. Now I'm wondering if the ratings for that ep were a little higher that week?

Hope so!

That's why I suggested writing ABC. To let them know whgy this episode was so appreciated. It just might get them to look at Firefly as a "property of interest". Y'never know, right?

I'm all for the itune idea, 11th. Firmly onboard .

I'm always up for imaginative possibilities. It's just that Firefly/Serenity already has a kind of tangled copyright going on because it's split between 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios. A third entity trying to join in could pose a legal nightmare... then there's the issue of ABC(?) having to either pay off, or share profits with, the other studios which could make the deal less attractive from a business standpoint.

I'm starting to think a revival of the 'Verse is destined to wait until 2012 when the Firefly rights expire with 20th Century Fox and things loosen up more. As for Universal, the three picture contract already expired, but they still of course retain rights because of the Serenity DVD and licensed merchandise. As for production rights, don't know for sure.

However, between now and then the more we can help build up the audience for the 'Verse and keep it alive, then a revival will be a very attractive notion for a studio. Or... maybe by then there will be a way for Joss himself to regain the rights and produce the revival himself! Either way, it continues to be important to keep spreading the word, in big ways and small.

I tried to email ABC at that address and it wasn't a good one. Does anyone have another?

And the iPod is being lent at lunch to a friend that forgot to watch the episode last Monday and doesn't have internet access.

Yes, some people still don't have internet at home.

I would suggest you go to ABC's Castle page, and click on "contact us". I could've sworn it was the address I wrote down... ah well. I guarantee there's a way to thank them from there, because I've done it.
