she´s not a very good actress and she´s not half as hot as Summer Glau for example.. Which Summer proved beyond doubt in her DH episodes..

That said, she´s not ugly or anything. Attractive but not anthing special..

This is what makes Dollhouse less appealing than other Joss shows for me. Eliza Dushku,or rather the character of Echo,just isn't likeable enough to grab your enthusiasm.I don't feel any wish to be rooting for her.I feel more empathy for Adele de Witt, who,in my opinion,would have made the better main protagonist.

I agree, the character of Echo failed to snare empathy from the audience and I believe that might have been what doomed the series in some respects because the first like 8 episodes fell solely on her experiences. Other dolls were just passing shadows in the background.

Had they done an ensemble piece from the beginning (which is what Joss is so good at) I think there might have been a better shot. Not to draw too many direct connections between Joss's work, but in Firefly, you had a girl, who's thoughts were undecipherable who in the end, the whole story was going to pivot on, but you didn't rely on her to carry the story.

Where as in Dollhouse he tried to have Echo carry the story, or at least carry the prolonged introduction to the series, a concept that has gotten him burned before. Many critics even said once the story really got humming and the ensemble was really brought to the front and center, and Echo's "adventure of the week" was put down as something of a given, background item until something interesting happened, the series definitely was more ensnaring.

Personally, on my reflections of Joss's work both with Firefly and Dollhouse, he seems split between two ideologies, and sometimes they come to conflict, at least in finding an audience. Those two being

1. "Reset Button" This includes shows like Star Trek, Stargate, and others. Having a weekly episodic adventure that at the end of, we've looked maybe a little bit into what makes the characters tick, learned a Star Trek-esque morality lesson perhaps and you can watch most of these episodes in any order because no one dies or changes very quickly (usually takes an entire season to accomplish a major character change, unless an actor bails).

2. Serious Serial. This includes shows like Lost, The Sopranos, Dexter, and others. The concept of these is one episode directly feeds from the last, perhaps not every episode, but most are going to require a "Last time on..." to help both refresh the viewer and catch up those who missed a week. These series' tend to dive deep into character development, have the more involved and deep storyline and themes.

Now most shows fall on a spectrum, Dexter for example ran on the "kill of the week" with a rising backstory that would eventually tear Dexter out of his comfort zone in some new direction (that's when they were following the novels, all episodes after season 2 or 3 (I can't remember which) is new content.) And Stargate Atlantis had 2 and 3 part episodes that instigated more direct change.

But it's the fact that Firefly and Dollhouse seemed really torn over which way to go with that may have hurt them. Firefly wanted to lean toward #2 from the get go, and Fox's skittish nature forced Joss to attempt to pull it back toward epic episodic adventures and try to build the backstory on his own time.

Dollhouse (barring the pilot that was sliced up and dispersed (I actually like the way it aired better than the pilot which I found confusing) tried the other attempt, it went with weekly adventures with a building backstory right from the get go. However, the inability to make an audience care about Echo (I dont' know if it was writing, or Dushku lacking charisma that someone like Nathan Fillion has) this didn't work, and feeling the thumb on the "cancel" button drawing ever near, Joss slammed into exposition mode and told us a story designed for 3 or 4 seasons in a little under 2. Hence the strange hyper-descent of DeWitt into alcoholism among other time compression elements. Even under this ratcheted up state, the show continued to entertain Joss fans and even more than before, left outside viewers in the dust.

Joss has great ideas, with some unfortunate complications with execution. Unfortunately, until he figures out what he's doing wrong (in terms of games in the industry and the chess match of deep story vs. catching an audience) he's going to continue having difficulties I think. Because it is possible to do a deep character story with mystery on a network, just look at Lost. (not a fan of it myself but it definitely got it's time in the sun).

If adapting his work to the hyper-competitive arena of Network Television that Fox operates in is proving this difficult, I think seeking out a Browncoat who works at HBO, Showtime, or maybe even FX (since that's a fox network) would better suit him, the competitive-ness of cable is a bit lower (though I would advocate keeping my nose out of SyFy, their scope and audience is a bit limited, as is their reputation to be honest.)

Liked her as Faith, liked her as Tru, but disliked her as Echo. Which I think means she wasn't the problem with Dollhouse.

It does leave a bad association in my mind though. Echo was just a crummy character IMO. So, when I see her now I think of the crummy.

Still if they made a Faith mini-series I'd be watching in an instant. Even if it didn't feature a single other Buffyverse character.

Well, of course it´s all about opinions but Eliza has never been as hot as Summer is in TSCC or that tv movie The initiation of Sarah. Imo

Finished Season 1 on DVD

Yeah, I know.... a bit late to the party. I'd always planned to go back and catch up on EVERY ep, on DVD, as is my fav way to watch really good shows.

Looking back, I can see why this show never really grabbed me from the start. It has classic 'Joss' elements, clever twists and such, but it was missing that binding piece which draws one into a show and has 'em coming back for more.

The show was kinda like taffy. Nice, but doesn't really do much for me.

( no idea where that analogy came form. It's been years since I even HAD taffy. )

I am looking forward to seeing how the series wraps up, but more out of respect to those involved ( writers, actors, etc.. ) than the story as a whole. If that makes any sense.
