With news of Dollhouse being 'renewed' (I'm still going to wait for the officially official announcement on Monday) I've been thinking about what Dollhouse needs to be successful. Now I know that right out the gates Dollhouse wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but the show did get better by episode 6 ('Man on the Street') and shows great potential for season 2. A problem is that too many people bowed out and gave up on the show before that. Another is that not enough people, in general, watched it. I think two factors that attribute to this are the night it aired (Friday, which we can do really nothing about), and the advertising that was done for the show. In this case, the lack thereof.

I'm not saying FOX was out to get Dollhouse through poor advertising. I watch 5 shows on FOX (House, Bones, Fringe, Dollhouse, and Terminator: SCC) and I think in general FOX does a poor job at advertising it's own shows past the initial push when the pilot airs. FOX did the grindhouse advertising for Terminator and Dollhouse for what, about a week or so?

What I suggest is this: Those of us who want to see Dollhouse succeed will do what we do best, mainly viral marketing. I was thinking about fanfic contests, music video contests, making banners and posters, original art, essays written about the many ethical dilemmas involved with the show, even short films. All aimed at getting more people to watch Dollhouse or buy the DVDs.

We've done stuff like this for Firefly, but in this case I think our efforts would be more likely to be rewarded because this show is still on the air.

Any thoughts?

I agree, but putting on after a hit like "24" or "BONES" to get some new viewers to have a look at it will help. It may do better pairing it with "FRINGE" or "Lie to Me" if T:TSCC is not renewed.
