Today, on Philly's NPR station ( www.whyy.org), there was a TV critic on "Radio Times." Despite the thoroughly unjustly broad-brushed diss-fest on Star Trek which he'd perpetrated, I saw fit to swallow my wounded Trekkie-American pride and do my Browncoat duty.

So I called in and managed to snag an open line. The results can be found here ( http://www.whyy.org/rameta/RT/2005/RT20050222_20_2.ram), at time index 38:48.

I must contritely report that I was a mite flummoxed by how rapidly I got on air, so I flubbed a bit, and not only failed to mention the title of the BDM, but actually said that it would come out next year. Even as I realized what I'd just said, I made the command decision to keep the composure in my voice and leave the error, rather than come off as a stammering fan-boy. Bollocks.

Still, the guest picked up the ball in grand fashion and said some mightily purdy things about our BDS. And at least some more people know about the DVDs.

Humbly submitted.

Excellent work, Noocyte!! It was a great question and got the word out nicely.

As an exercise in my rusty transcription skills, I took a stab at the dude's response to your question:

response by radio show guest to Noocyte's question
Yeah. Firefly was created by Joss Whedon, who did Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and was a really interesting idea, which was to essentially make a western in outer space. Now you’d think this would be a show I would hate … But it was actually very engaging and extremely frustrating that, just as we were beginning, in this Joss Whedon way of slowly unfolding the layers of these characters, that the show was yanked from the air. And so, as the caller correctly points out, the whole series came out on DVD. I’ve watched it. And, and actually that’s a good point, which is, I find that a lot of people now are waiting and watching shows on DVD because they, especially serialized shows, they like to sit down and watch three, four, five hours of a show in one sitting and you get a sense of where the story’s going, how the characters are developing. And so I think that, that kind of, and I love it when viewers organize campaigns like that. You know. And I’m not talking about those kind of, everybody signs a form, the same form letter, and sends it in. Because that’s what sunk an organization like Viewers for Quality Television. Eventually networks said, “Oh. That’s from that committee. We can ignore them because they just send in the same thing.” When it’s real, kind of grassroots, individualized pleas, the networks listen to that kind of stuff.

Bravo Noocyte, you helped spread the word! The only time I ever called in to a radio show, I suddenly couldn't seem to form any sentences longer than four words of two syllables each!

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Thanks for the kudos, folks. And thanks muchly for putting in the effort of transcribing, Soup!

Actually, DarkJester, it was the first time I have ever called into a radio program (Just as Firefly was the first show for which I have ever participated in concerted Fanac), and I was fair certain I would come across sounding like some amalgam of Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig. Goes to show that stage fright is never worse than it is when you're waiting in the wings!

If I had it to do again, I would have gone for the slight stammer with titular plug and factual accuracy on the BDM, and used some adjectives other than "peculiar" to describe our glorious, marvelous, brilliant, groovy, captivating, SHINY BDS.

Sigh.

Reckon it's true what they say about steak.

Yeah. That's the problem I have with dialogue. It's always ambiguous to me when to put the sentence breaks and I usually just default to when the speaker pauses.
