Come on NBC... you've got a few quality shows... pick up Firefly (no matter how much it costs you to buy out the rights from Fox) and get this great series back on the air in 2006 (I don't think we can survive another "BDM"!).

HARTMEISTER

I think that Sci Fi channel is a better location than a big network. Genre (sci-fi in particular) programs tend to do poorly on the network. Sci-Fi works better in the movies because people tend to pay money for special effects. Of course, I can see a day coming up where sci-fi wears out its welcome in the movies as people become jaded about eye dropping special effects.

Even if Serenity had been a box office blockbuster, I don't think the networks believe that Sci-Fi is an exact fit with their audience. There audience tends to like paranormal shows and hates genres that offer either past (think Nero Wolfe on A&E which was described by many as the best show on television yet only survived two seasons on a minor channel) or future (Star Trek, Firefly, etc). They think their audience likes sci-fi only if it is a separate world, like a movie theatre and there is no good way to lead into a sci-fi series. One of the most common ways to build viewership is to have stars from other programs guest star in another program in either their same character or in a slightly different one. This doesn't work as well with historical genre programs, as the stars look weird in a different timeline

Just imagine this promo if Firefly was on ABC:

"On this weeks's Firefly, Desparate Housewives' Tori Hatcher guest tries to kick Inara off Firefly as a companion with something extra..."

I think what will happen to Firefly is very dependent upon what happens with Joss and Wonder Woman. If it is a big success, I don't think Firefly will get much of his attention. Less than bog success Firefly will get some of his attention IF Universal want's it done as either a TV series or movies. But don't be surprised if his role becomes more like an executive producer role and he turns it over to someone else. I think that Joss is now a big time director and would probably want to turn part of the project over to someone else.

I don't know if many people say this but I think there is a real difference between Joss Fans whose who believe is ultimate creation is Firefly and Firefly fans who may (or may not) like Buffy and Angel. I think the general public really has never seen an episode of either Buffy or Angel hearing that they were teenage supernatural programs on Fox. One of the dichatomies of Firefly that its insistence of realism in its depiction of the future makes it quite different than Buffy or Angel in which you have to get past the premise that vampires exist. and that its as much a western as it is sci-fi.

Firefly with its very western appeal (the government is evil) and southern agrarian (corporations are out to get you) message might very well play with southern and western conservatives that wouldn't be caught dead watching a show about a teenage vampire slayer. I'm beginning to think that this may be a slight problem with some of the marketing was that it didn't quite appeal a broad section of the public. One of the wallpaper's for Serenity stated:

From the makers of 'Buffy' and 'Angel'

when that might mean nothing and might actually turn some people off.

What I'd like to see is a demographic breakdown of Firefly fans to see where we need to market this to others. I suspect that we'll find that the bulk of the fans of Firefly are sci-fi or edgy TV fans. But I think the real explosion will be when we expose this show to a broader segment of the public. And I don't mean by TV. Many of those won't watch Sci-Fi channel or wouldn't watch it on broadcast TV either. Instead of reaching out to your neighboor who is a geek, look to that neighbor who likes country music or hunting. Ask them if they've ever seen a sci-fi series with country music ballad as its theme song.

Good comments Hartmeister.

I'm favoring NBC since apparently the are part of Universal's corporate network and thus closer to Firefly than ABC or CBS.

"Lost" is considered "Sci-Fi" and it is extremely popular and does great on ABC. Much of what you state reflects what I think the network corporate view of viewers is not the actual viewership themselves.

If NBC put Firefly back on the air I think it would be a smash hit because NBC would bring a large audience (even in today's world of cable TV the three big networks still pull the largest audience shares by a large margin). Once a decent amount of people actually see Firefly it will become very successful (assuming it is made with the same quality as the original series.

I do think marketing Serenity as "by the maker of Buffy and Angel" was a bad move. I know there are a lot of "Joss Fans" that love Buffy and Angel, but seriously I love Firefly and knowing that Joss is responsible / involved with Angel and Buffy turns me away a little. If I'd never seen Firefly and read that I probably would dismiss and ignore Firefly.

From the five times I've seen Serenity the demographic audience seems to be extremely "old" (not the typical "male 16-35" audience!). Serenity seems to be pulling the 50+ crowd (Star Trek fans?). Firefly draws a lot of female viewers. So if I had to sum up the Firefly demographic in super simple terms: "mature, intelligent females". (not to imply at all that there aren't a lot of us "mature, intelligent males" also watching)

Release some action figures (ignore the crappy ones they did release), cool models, a Lego set, some guns, make a PS2 video game and bingo you've got the young male audience. What the networks seem to fail to realize is that Firefly has appeal to every age range and gender! Firefly well marketed on NBC could be one of the top series of all time.

The only negative working against Firefly being phenomenally popular is virtually zero marketing!

YT

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

There were a couple of news items on IMDB yesterday (2005 November 9) that relate to a couple of recent posts in this thread. One is that Blockbuster may be on the verge of bankruptcy. So, you can either say 'Never mind that they won't carry Firefly', or you can write Blockbuster corporate & tell 'em you'd like to patronize their local store, but they don't have Firefly.

The other (Death of Primetime) is that the big three broadcast networks have announced plans to make their content available on demand (VOD / PpV / subscription). This is great news for us. While I don't suggest anyone give up current efforts to save Firefly all on its lonesome, lets look for ways to show our support for this concept. It makes Neilsen ratings obsolete.

Keep the Shiny Side Up . . .

I believe the FOX network has shown the Firefly/Serenity fans that they don't understand the show/movie like the fans, cast and crew understood them. therefor, FOX will never be the loving home for either a series return or funding a sequel ever again. the SciFi Channel IS a perfect fit for Firefly's return!

Yup! FOX owns "Firefly's" Rights, but NOT "Serenity's"

FOX messed up the order of the original airing because they had no real cares about STORY/PLOT, they just wanted something to fill the friday night line up!

Also, just a thought, you might want to rethink your dream sequence, in case an under 14 year old stumbles onto this post.

I think that's because you're two or three years too late. When it was first cancelled, not only was there a massive letter-writing campaign, and not only did Joss Whedon wear himself ragged by taking it to all the other networks, but the Browncoats took out a full-page ad in Variety (I think it was Variety) in which they thanked the cast and creators and vowed to bring the show back. Fast-forward to 2005, and you've got Serenity, because Universal exec Mary Parent is a "Whedon-stalker", and because the DVDs sold so well. As one of the earlier posts mentions, it was probably the initial campaign that got the DVD set made. So the first wave of Browncoats has done an awesome job, one that the latecomers might not know anything about.

FOX was always the wrong network for the show, and Joss knew it the second they sent back the pilot and demanded something with more jokes and more action. (Though...I kinda liked it better when Mal lightened up.) The sticking point is that they own the rights. This is presumably neither here nor there to them, since they don't seem to be considering bringing it back, but it would surely represent an extra impediment to any other station, even if they could be persuaded. It would be an extra expense, another legal hoop to jump through, etc. This is why the Browncoats' strategy is split on the issue, and some are still looking at FOX while others are looking elsewhere.

I personally think that a unified approach is the only way to go, and we should try to find out what the process is for one network selling their rights, how much it costs, how hard it is, etc. Depending on the answers, we should either stick with FOX (which has a history of bailing on quality shows, but also a history of being the only one to show them to start with) or settle on another network, such as ABC or NBC. Or, you know, HBO, which has a history of creating, airing, AND sticking with quality shows.

Vancouver

by the way, you're at least a year too late if you want to make 2004 the year we bring back Firefly.

I have seen about a couple of online petitions for FireFly, someone has a bright idea then creates one and tells 5 ppl, then someone else creates one.

Instead of creating a thread first telling everyone where the official one is.

online = waste of time unless its organised so that there is only 1 out there for ppl to add names too. Even then I doubt they take much notice.

It's the irony of the growth of the internet. Back in the day ('95 or so), a petition made a lot of sense because there was usually only one effort, one bullhorn that everyone flocked to. Now there are multiple distinct and diluted efforts. But you're right -- even just the one sometimes doesn't help much, such as was the case with Space: Above and Beyond. (Hey, it was the only thing on.)

Forget Fox!

They've pulled this kind of stunt before. They Dropped Doctor Who in favor a Pauly Shore Gag Show. (Gag, how appropriate).

They're the ones who thought they pulled a major stunt on George Lucas when he negotiated their continuing to bankroll his first Star Wars movie. They are the reason he's so damned rich in Star Wars now.

I would say the Joss Wheedon should approach Mr. Lucas and see if he's interested in rubbing the nose's of the Fox executives in their stupid mistakes, again.

everbody is talking and nobody is doing. I think that SciFi looks like our best hope since Joss won't work with Fox anymore (not that i would trust them with the Verse myself) So here is the Info for doing a mail campaign. Also, point of fact, there are a lot more of us now, why not try an organized, pointed campaign again. With any luck JW might have some fertile ground to sow the seeds of a new show once he finishes with WW.

Also, another point of intrest, SciFi.com has there own BBoard. It might be a good idea to get everybody here to register there and start chatting up about our beloved Verse. If there own site is clogged with Firefly fans then they have to know that we exist. And that we like them. Just a thought.

I think I started this the wrong way around, but no matter. Serenity was my introduction to the Firefly universe, and I fell totaly for the consept. I quickly got hold of the Firefly DVD to see more of the universe and to get to know the characters better.

I can't say I understand their reason for closing down the show. There is so much more I want to know about the characters and the universe.
What did they replace Firefly with? Since I'm not from the US I have no idea, so if someone could tell me I would appreciate it

Now the topic issue. Is there any way I can help to try to get Firefly back on the screen? Since I'm rather new I haven't had time to read everything that has happened yet.
Any and all pointers would be great

I am a newly converted Firefly fan. I just bought the series on iTunes, watched the first episode, and then I couldn't stop. Went straight through all of them.

The reason I did this is because a friend persisted until I gave in and bought the series. I think this is the most effective way of helping to bring Firefly back. Word of mouth, increasing the fandom exponentially until millions have been converted. If every Firefly fan got three people hooked, and then those three people, etc. it'd be a madhouse. We need this show, we need it. I know I need it.

So let's spread the word. I'm sure this has been said a thousand times, but a thousand more couldn't hurt.

Welcome home, by the way, because that is where you are.

We all fall in love with Firefly.. thank you for sharing your story. I saw my first ep and ordered the DVD's that night. When I got them I couldn't quit watching until I was done. My life has not been the same since.

This is a shiny site... we're a pretty friendly albeit weird bunch around here.

When a new person joins the site we have a tradition of greeting them with food and drink ( virtual, mind you.) and with a browncoat of their very own. You needs yours...

*hands Amneeziac a browncoat*

There you are. You have your gear. We are currently fighting hard to get Firefly/Serenity back. We have a campaign going called the Serenity Summer Campaign. Starting next week we are going to be very busy posting at other sites to share the news that Firefly will be on all day long on a marathon on SciFi as the lead in to their big Stargate premiere night. I think it's a very wise choice they've made and we're gonna write them and thank them and ask them for more.
We have much more planned for the future.

Join us?

Oh, and make yourself to home... we'll be nearby.

How could Firefly come back when so many of the threads that made the show compelling were closed off in Serenity? River's secret is revealed, Shepherd and Wash are dead, Kaylee finally gets laid, the Reavers are mainstream and mostly dead after clashing with the alliance.

How Whedon could resurrect a series that his film looked suspiciously designed to finish I don't know but I am no film maker. Maybe he could pull it off, but I don't think he actually wants to.

I thought the series was excellent and wasn't happy when it was killed-off before being given a chance, but things move on and I think it's for the best to wave g'bye to an excellent show.

One of my employees loaned me the first disc from the series a week ago and that very evening after watching it,I ran out bought the series and the movie. I love it and feel akin to the characters and stories. I know all of this has been said one way or another and might sound a bit goopy. How do we go about getting more?

There are many storie lines that could be explored. How about after seeing the truth of what happened on Meranda there is a second Brown Coat rising lead by.... Mal and the crew. I think that that would make a very good second season. The River storyline is far from over, Heck if they wanted to they could persue a story that involved the Allance using the Reavers as berserker soilders. the possiblilities are endless.

If there is no spoon, What the heck am I eating with?

SUMMERDREAM

There is so much life left in firefly and serenity it could explode. I want the show back; I want another movie and more. I am sure everyone ever involved wants more. Some characters died in the movie but there is still plenty to be said. Thankyou joss, I love the world and the universe of firefly so much and I dream and hope for more to come.

Lets keep it going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd want to see more, too. It's a pity I only got to see both Firefly and Serenity recently (not more than a month's span, I think).

As for Wash/Book reappearing: as flashbacks, I guess...I mean, there still seems to be a fairly large gap between the original series and the movie (or will the comics fill that up?)

I absolutely concur that we must do everything to bring the show back. I'd ask y'all to check out the Guerilla Marketing room on this board and share your ideas there. Lots of good ideas there on steps we can take to turn our desire for MORE!!! into action. Do what ever you can to loan the DVDs out to friends and when they're hooked, invite them on over to the site and hand them a stack-o-handbills to give to all THEIR friends. KEEP THE SIGNAL GOING!!!!!
