I haven't seen a release date, but most DVD players will play any region discs, with the proper encouragement.

Check the site http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php for your specific model to see if they have any advice for playing region 1 discs on your region 2 player.

Also, if worse comes to worse, you could buy the Region 1 set, and get someone (local would be best) to burn you a Region 2 copy with a DVD+/- drive.

Good luck!
Rob

Thanks for your reply!

I did find out that my DVD player takes Region 1, but then I couldn't even get Region 1 in the UK, so I'm getting it sent from the States!

Another possible route for you, and any other UK fans: I got my (R1) set from http://www.playusa.com, the region 1 arm of play.com. Prices are in sterling, and they don't charge for postage. I've used Play many times before and have always had good service from them.

However you get it mailed to the UK, you'll almost certainly have to pay some customs charges at the Post Office if you've paid over £25 for it.

Oh, shuck's had I known you needed a set I would have mailed one to ya! (have to pay for it of course, but i would have been glad to do the legwork!)

In fact, any of you brits (or other r2 folks) looking to get a copy, you should make a post, as i bet there's dozens of us willing to ship 'em over the pond for ya (should avoid import taxes, no?)!

Good news! There is to be a R2 release of the Firefly boxed set. According to Play.com, it will be released on 19/4/2004 :-)

I have already bought the R1 set and payed the import tax (£9) which it was easily worth.

Apparently the extra features may differ on the UK release. Any changes are TBC...

I have leant my R1 set to a friend who works for SFX magazine, which is produced in Bath. It looks like they are going to review it for the mag in time for the R2 release - those guys are massive fans of the show! Should mean lots of shiney new boxed set buyers...

You could order an american DVD player, have it shipped to the UK along with Firefly, then there would be no wait.

I'm not saying America is the greatest country ever to grace the surface of the Earth. I'm just saying you can get a good DVD player for $69 at Walmart located in every neihborhood in every town in every state in America. And they all play Firefly today, not on some mythical future release date. Not to mention the great t-shirt I bought there last week for $4. And some lighbulbs and batteries.

But cheer up, as I've said before the UK will be the first to see the new Doctor Who.

I've had nothing but trouble trying that. I bought a DVD player in Germany and brought over some region 2 DVDs. Even though the player was NTSC and PAL compatible, I didn't think that the movies would only be in PAL. I couldn't play them on my NTSC TV.

My recommendation is a computer with a DVD player and video card that has TV outputs.

I am an ignoramus in this area: I live in the US, and have a PC with a DVD burner; can I burn a region 2 copy from my region 1 original? I have a friend in Austria who would love to see the series, and her birthday is soon. I hate to have to wait till April to give her Firefly!
