i haven't read too many waves from other browncoats writing about letters they've sent to networks and tv studios about bringing firefly back to the airwaves. are we pinning all our hopes to an iffy movie coming out of universal studios? what if this falls through? i think we should ban together and double our efforts and innundate studios/networks with MORE correspondence than ever! is there a way for fans to petition this with the help of joss and the cast and crew of firefly? i, myself, have written to scifi, universal, upn,wb,etc. i don't think that dvd sales alone are enough to assure the hollywood money people that firefly is a good investment! i think we should continue to stand up and represent our fan interest as well, now more than ever! BROWNCOATS UNITE!!!

LETS MAKE 2004 THE YEAR FIREFLY RETURNS! (signed as always, a loyal browncoat)

there is a petition site, that you can get people to sign, and send it off as one big package to Fox and such. Or maybe start one here. Just make sure those blue-handed Fox execs get it.

Here is my signature-ish thing if you start a petition:

Name: Teela Brown (I might offer my real name, but not now)
Reason: BRING BACK FIREFLY!!!
Comments: "I don't give half a hump whether you're guilty or not. You're going to burn in that very special level of hell. A place reserved for network executives who cancel intelligent shows and instead embrace ben-dan go-se reality programming." (Sorry, Zaphod, I had to.)
YOU CAN'T TAKE THE SKY FROM US!!!!!

Well, that is that. I hope you do start a petition, and I'm not kidding when I say I will sign it like that. Any way, Keep flyin'!

Get the Gorram petition going and i'll get 50 people to sign it over here in Australia where Firefly has never been aired. Everyone (and I mean everyone) I have shown the show to has been absolutely amazed that this show could be cancelled while all the other TRIPE stays on air.... Hey Calhoun,

I am not ever sure if we had anything to do with it, but a bunch of us Canadians did an E-mail campaign to get our Sci-Fi channel, the Space Channel to air Firefly. I recieved an Email back saying they could not comment on their scheduling, but my input was welcome and would be considered. Then sure enough, Firefly was in the Fall Schedule unairred eps and all, Mondays at 7PM,8PM,9PM depending on your timezone ( better timeslot than Fox gave it )

I recall a post saying that in Brazil there is a strong fan base as well. perhaps you guys can get a local network to air it, more browncoats for the cause.

Good Luck

Whoa--do we really want to be petitioning FOX on this? Not only did they kill "Firefly" after apparently never understanding it or supporting Joss's vision, but one gets the definite sense that Joss is not feelin' too kindly towards that network and wouldn't much want to take the series back there.

It would make much more sense to target a network that would support the show. Just as Joss moved "Buffy" over after FOX killed it, we should consider a move. (Of course, this assumes that FOX either doesn't have the rights, or has them and is willing to sell them for a price that another network is willing to pay.)

If Universal is interested in the movie, maybe they would also buy a series. I don't know if that studio does make TV shows--does anyone? I gather that the show was pretty expensive to make, which may be why it didn't get shopped to the SciFi Channel in the U.S., as their budget isn't exactly equally to that of big studios and networks like FOX.

It would be great if Joss would give us feedback on where he thinks the show would take hold--although one must assume that if there were a network he thought would buy it, he'd already have been in talks with them. He's said that he's spent every day of his life since cancellation trying to keep the show alive. . . .

I've signed on-line petitions before. I'm not sure how well they work but it's worth a try. As for Fox cancelling Firefly...well, I guess I'm sorta used to it by now. My favorite show of all time was cancelled in 1978...Battlestar Galactica, then the networks had to go and ruin the original concept of the show by "re-imagining" it. Let's hope that doesn't happen to Firefly 25 years from now.

The best bet is to try and get ahold of the networks in any possible way to convince them to pick the show.

Leeh- how about we send one to Fox, to rub it in their face to show what they missed out on, and then send the others to other willing clients or T.V. stations. Or, if we happen to get some one else to pick it up, then we send it to Fox to show what us browncoats can do.

Heya Ginobiffaroni,

Sounds like a plan!

I'll give it a shot though I dont envisage much success, I have already asked my video rental stores to get it and they can find no reference to it in any of their ordering catalogues..not surprising considering Firefly DVD's only come in region 1. Still..

Later.

Ohmigod, I didn't mean THOSE shows! I'm a Buffy fan myself, and like Angel as well. I meant all the NON-Joss stuff, basically--the formulaic sitcoms and tired dramas that seem like rehashes of rehashes of rehashes. It's hard to imagine a FF fan who isn't at least appreciative of Buffy and Angel, since they have his signature intelligence and wit. I guess I should give the WB credit for letting Angel live, while FOX killed FF so quickly, huh?

Well... after Fox canceled the show, there were postcard and petition campaigns directed toward WB, UPN and the Sci Fi Channel. All three networks passed on it, obviously.

The pre-cancellation letter writing campaign to Fox DID result in the DVD set eventually being produced.

With the success of the show in the UK (and online) and since the DVD appears to be more successful than anyone hoped... I wonder if WB, UPN or Sci Fi would be more willing to listen to the browncoats and bring the show back.

Perhaps the launching of another campaign is in order.

Where's the petition to bring back firefly?
Where's the list of sponsors so we know whom to thank?
Where's the snail mail addresses for fox, upn, sci-fi, and the sponsors?

I just plopped $35 bucks for the DVD set. If I'm willing to do that, might be other people are as well. I'm willing to write a letter or three, but I do need know where the action is.

Who's got the goods? And why isn't it posted in nice obvious like spot on the front page?

I recently just finished watching Firefly on DVD, since I was not fortunate engough to see it on TV when originaly aired. It took all of 5 day, and that was because I was trying to make it last. By the end the 2 hour movie I was hooked. The people at FOX should be shot. What a crime to end this show so fast. Lets make sure that Joss doesn't give up on Firefly. Its too good to just let go.
I can only describe the loss I felt after viewing the last episode as like a person newly in love watching there new love get hit by a bus.

I stumbled onto Firefly when it aired on the Space channel, and not knowing that they'd already cancelled the show, I fell in love with it after the first episode I watched (don't remember which one).

Damn shame this show got cancelled - just viewed the DVDs and am waiting to see the flick. I was blown away and have been scouring the net for facts regarding the story's future.

Any news of the sci-fi channel showing an interest in resurrecting the series?

Sci-fi has resuscitated both Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica. Seems logical to assume Firefly could find a home there; with a decent time-slot to expand viewer base.

I know the box office draw has been less than inspiring and well below goal, so hope for a sequel is floundering.

-----------------------------------------------

After seeing Serenity repeatedly, I am convinced the only way to truly keep the Firefly 'verse alive is as an episodic television show. The heart of Firefly was in its pace, its character development, its charm, if you will. The slow moments, the magic moments, the humorous moments gave the show balance and were what captivated and created its avid audience. Movies, issued every 2-3 years, determined to be "epic," forced to focus on the "high" points and on dramatic action, lose this heart, lose the spirit of Firefly.

Consider the legacy of Trek. While Firefly is in many ways a reaction to/against Trek, it also, as is always the case in art, stands on the shoulders of its predecessor. A new vision, ahead of its time, created by one determined person's vision, misunderstood, mishandled, and, thus, aborted. Only to be kept alive and reborn at the insistence of a passionate (read, obsessed) following. With what results? Five television series, totalling over twenty years of episodes. Ten films (by my count, off the top of my head - I'm sure hairs can be split, here, if you must). An entire subculture, with references that permeate the culture, writ large.

Can we not do this? Can we not use the incredible success and longevity of Trek as credentials of a sort?

(I am not seeking to start a discussion of Wwhat fans think of Trek. I am very excited about Firefly, obviously, as a refreshing alternative to the Trekian 'verse. I just wish to not forget the lessons of history. Our history.)

What are our numbers, exactly? I have purchased the DVD set, and three tickets, so far, to Serenity. I have not yet joined clubs or signed petitions - although I am obviously headed that way. Am I counted among the faithful, when people discuss our numbers? How many fans do we have, and how many were needed to resurrect Trek, in its day?

I cannot, will not believe that we do not constitute a base large enough to support a television show, on some network, somewhere.

What would it take for SF channel to commit? They are business people, no doubt. We gain nothing by slandering those in Hollywood who need to pay attention to the bottom line, or by yearning for a more utopian world. Firefly, after all, is about folks tryin' to get by in a distinctly dystopian world.

On the contrary, what we need to do is to come together and convince the bottom-lined, hard-headed business folk of television that Firefly is just that - good business. As our Mal-content said, "I'm here for business."

I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I care more about this show than everything else on TV combined. For the most part, I literally do not have the time for television, nowadays. For Firefly, I make time.

Folks talk about one million copies of Serenity to be sold, theoretically, or similar numbers of Firefly DVDs, in the past . . . (I dunno - I am not an authority, here. The numbers, I'm sure, are on the CoreTex.)

If each of one million fans committed, in some online fashion, to contributing a whopping $1 per episode, we would be able to defray the cost of one hour of expensive, special effects laden TV by $1,000,000.00. If only 100,000 fans were serious enough, but were willing to pay $5 per episode, that would be $500,000.00.

Maybe they could receive special River Tam Decoder Rings, as a token of being among the True Believers? Whatever. Just give me my gorram show back.

I would consider it a better investment in art and entertainment than a cable subscription, for sure. Or 90% of the theater fare, these days.

I don't know how this would work. But I am willing to believe, as the good Shepherd would have us all do, in something. I do not accept that we can't push something like this forward, and resuscitate our poor, bloody, show. She is, for sure, tore up plenty. But she'll fly true.

If, that is, she is loved. Welded. Rewired. Repainted. Bloody well duct taped, if that's what it takes.

Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down.

Can't stop the signal.

How you get there is the worthier part.

Shoot. I've already bought the first season 3 times & I'll keep seeing the BDM until it's gone from my state. We don't have cable, and I'd sure as heck put the money we don't spend on thousands of hours of crap (and the few good hours we miss, too) into pre-paying for another season of Firefly.

We talk about how the www brings fans together & has already completely changed, for instance, the way the music industry does things... why not change the TV industry (without having to upset them or pirate anything to do it)? Why not get our show made by paying for it ourselves?

I know. I know. I read a lot of talk like this when Firefly was first cancelled, and everybody said it couldn't be done for one reason or another, but I'd swear there were enough people out there who'd paypal the $$$ straight to Joss to convince him we meant it. A season straight to DVD? A show released for download one ep at a time, for as long as the fans continued to pony up? I'd be one of the prepaid season subscribers. PROMISE.

OH, I want my SHOW BACK. Mayn't I pretty please have it?

I'd love to combine efforts with other Browncoats, but all the established groups are fortressed in my area. They are "full" and not joinable. This seems very Alliance, but oh, well.

And, what is going on with Blockbuster? They will not carry Firefly. They refuse to carry the series.

Not only do they NOT have it, as the store manager told me, "We aren't getting it" (this is sent down from corporate). She also added, "Everybody's been asking, though,"

"Well, if everybody's been asking-"

"I have no control over it," she said.

"So-who do I talk to?"

"You can e-mail Blockbuster at the website,"

"OK," I said.

"Please," she said with a smile, "Get them to let me carry it, would you?"

What the heck is up with that? I'd love to meet these other people who asked, and join with them to make Blockbuster give us an answer.

Guess I'll have to start my own Browncoats group.

Thanks for reading-

If you're checking out this site, look also at the new thread under General Discussions: Let's Take It Into Our Own Hands . . .

All this stuff seems like an incredible tool to this newbie, but it also seems the big challenge is to coordinate it all!

Kudos, by the way, to the BDH's that make this whole site work! It offers a dizzying complexity of stuff . . .
