Well.

I am starting a project to map the interior of Serenity as a Half Life 2 level. I know, it's not as glossy as if this was done in 3DS Max or whatever, but it has the distinct advantage of being able to walk around in the ship. Don't really intend for there to be a story, although someone else may care to mod the work when I'm done.

I'm working from some deck plans I found on teh Intarwebs, and so far I've completed basic work on the cargo bay and the infirmary. Next up will be the passenger quarters, and then upstairs.

I'm doing the series version of the ship rather than the movie version simply because I like it more.

I'm going to need some help with texturing it, as Half Life's texture set leaves something to be desired for spaceships. If anyone can help with this, I'd be more than happy to hear from you.

If you want to see what's been done so far, check out these pictures:

Thank you. I've gotten a lot further along since these shots were taken, but it's getting to be a bit frustrating because the geometry of Firefly doesn't actually work: the upper deck doesn't fit on top of the lower deck, and the gangways don't match.

They addressed this slightly in the film Serenity by redesigning the ship. Big changes in series vs movie:

1. Cargo bay is lower - to enter it from the medical bay you now come down a flight of steps. In the series these two rooms were level. This is because if you don't drop the cargo bay, there isn't room for the dining room which is supposed to be directly above the cargo bay.

2. Doors into cargo bay added - if you leave the dining room heading toward the brige, there is a corridor immediately to your right which should lead down to the cargo bay: only it doesn't. It goes nowhere - there isn't an access to the cargo bay there. Also, you need a stairwell to take you down to cargo bay level. In the film, they fix this by adding doors on the upper level of the cargo bay.

3. Connecting stairwell too short: In the opening scene of Serenity, Mal walks with Simon from the engine room, into a corridor and down a flight of stairs leading to the medical bay. It's a short flight. But it's ridiculously too short: the staircase needs to be the entire height of the cargo bay to make it work, and it's not.

How sad a nerd am I to spot all these problems with the ship?

Actually there the front stairs down to the cargo bay. They come out by Inara's Shuttle and the Catwalks and there's another set that leads down to the floor to the right of the cargo bay doors (the one they leave Jayne on in "The Train Job")

Best Deckplans you could use are the ones in the Serenity RPG. Has the ship (near) perfectly laid out.

Although the nightmare are the passenger dorms. How the heck do they all fit into serenity's glowing ass with the engine and all????

Hoep that helps

You're exactltly the kinda nerd this 'verse needs. :)

I knew they redesigned the boat for the BDM. Engine room is a might different, too (larger in BDM). All-in-all, that upper cargo bay view you showed is astounding. You can just imagine River lying there. :)

Can't you just design it the way they did in Firefly itself? I mean, even though the geometry may not match, for some reason, you really don't notice it anyway. I reckon all these rooms have their own geometry anyway. Although I figure you have to be able to walk down corridors and some such, and be able to peek into the adjacent room and such. But I don't think anyone would fault you if we, say, were to walk into the dining room, and the interior appeared a bit wider than what the outer hull's constraints would physically allow. Nor do I think people would really mind if you extended a hallway a bit (or shortened it), just so as to make the geometry work.

I think it's just really a brilliant project you're working on. :) And I hope you're not giving up on it.

That's what I thought too, until I started building it. Then I ran into the physical problems: stuff just doesn't fit.

There are good plans available that show the individual decks, but not how they connect to each other. All the plans I've seen show flat, top down plans: there are no side views apart from one sketch by Joss which isn't any good because it isn't the final design.

Those two doors at the ends of the walkways going out of the upper cargo bay, above the hatch to the medbay don't go anywhere. They didn't in the series and they don't in the film. Purely for show.

It's been argued that had the show continued, we'd have seen what was behind these doors eventually - like the mystery hatch opposite the medbay.

You are so right about that! I suppose it's cos the passengers aren't really important. The crew all sleep up front, who cares if the passengers get a bit cooked ... :)

easy to explain: one sides the laundry room, the other sides access to the engine and the hot tub (what? every good spaceships's gotta have a hottub! )

Anyway: try and find a copy of the RPG deckplans, kind of maps out some of those hidden areas AND theres a side view.

Found this from the Virtual Firefly forum. A small version, but it might help:

Thanks for that. I appreciate it. However, the problem with the RPG plans is scale: it's been greatly simplified.

When building for an environment that you're going to explore from a first person perspective, and wanting it to look as much as possible like the show, the RPG plans introduce a new bunch of problems: they square everything off and they oversimplify the angles and sizes such that stuff becomes impractical.

I've been using the plans found here for that very reason. It's a more true scale in terms of ship size to human size, but I can see why the RPG designers made the changes they did: trying to make stuff fit.

Thanks for your kind comments. I'm still working on it, on and off, and ultimately that's exactly what I'm going to have to do: extend the staircases. They'll be much taller than they appear in the film, but the tradeoff is that the actual rooms will appear to a more correct scale - more as they do in the series.

I'll post some new screenshots soon, and when the basic structure is in place I'll post it on my site so people can fiddle with it further. Hopefully I'll be able to attract some texture freaks to help me out - HalfLife's textures aren't up to spaceships.

You've got no reason to be ' sad ' ! You're doing ' fine works ' ! There used to be some folk on the web who'd worked out nearly all the issues with making the ' ship of riddles ' , the Millennium Falcon , ' work '.

There were naturally problems because the ship set used for exteriors was built separately from the sets made for interior shots , for reasons related to setting up the shots in a practical way . But that created disparities , hence the dedicated efforts to resolve the fit problems .

I will be closely following your work . I'm nearly ready to bet that you may notice things that won't have been satisfactorily resolved by the time the ' professional ' blueprints are issued .

Probably to make everything ' fit ' , the ship will have to be ' designed ' from the inside out . Still , some dimensions and geometry may have to be reconsidered to make a walk-through VR model match with the physical sets . But , of course , the Firefly-class ships are known for their nooks and crannies and smugglers prefer them as a consequence .

Ultimately , I would love to be able to put on some VR headgear and do a complete walk-through of Serenity , even 'sit' in all the chairs , or operate the controls and ' fly ' the ship .

We might have to mod an existing program like
X-Plane to achieve the flying characteristics we need . I understand that Serenity is not a great flyer in the existing flight models , because they don't take into consideration that the ship has an anti-gravity component . A ship as massive as Serenity has to have grav-thrust because even if the engine pods produce 200,000 lbs of thrust each , that's not nearly enough to produce the required thrust-to-weight ratio .

There are some grav-mods available in X-Plane , but they may not be sufficient in their present form...That's where the new ' mods ' would come in .

So , I think what I'm looking for is a way to interface your work with the Serenity interior models with a workable ' flight ' model . It may be years away right now , but it's definitely a worthwhile effort...Would be great fun to make a VR Serenity simulator available online and at the conventions...

Small update for those that care. In an effort to have things be not too ridiculous, I've dropped the cargo bay lower and added a flight of stairs into it, as per the movie version of Serenity. This will hopefully allow the dining area to fit neatly on top of it.

I've fixed the walls of the medical bay (supposed to be angular, not a box, and added the stairs up to the next level. Although not shown here, I've also added some rudimentary passenger dorms.

Anyone else notice the 2 mistakes in the deckplan from the RPG? Both mistakes are with the stairs in the galley. In the hallway that connects to the engine room, the stairs are in the hallway and they step UP into to Galley. They should be in the Galley, stepping UP into the hall. (Remember in Objects in Space, River came DOWN those steps INTO the galley.) On the other side of the galley, their are no stairs at all. There should be another set IN the galley stepping UP into the hallway. (Remember in Serenity, Wash is going UP the steps OUT of the galley and into the hall while he is saying, "Didn't she shoot you once?"

That's exactly right, and has been the source of major headaches for me: in order to have that dip in the dining room, I'm going to have to extend the stairs from the medbay to the upper deck even more.

EDIT: oops. I went back and checked - In first scene of Serenity where Mal walks through the ship, he steps *down* out of the dining area into the back corridor. This would make my life easier. I think I'm going to have to rely more heavily on the film version, as the series version is actually unbuildable.

But I'm keeping the series platforms in the cargo bay - they're nicer, and I don't understand why they changed them.

Back when I originally produced the plans you're working off of, I started working on a side view of the decks and how they fit together. I put in so many hours creating the deckplans though, that I ran out of steam for the side view. I have a mostly complete upper deck side view and just some quick scratch work to see how the lower deck fit into place.

Everything appears to fit together perfectly as far as I completed it. As far as the upper, lower and mid decks, they all fit together perfectlly from a top down view. I created each deck area seperately based on my screencap observations. When I completed them, I decided to see how close they came to being able to fit together and was very pleasantly surprised that they overlay each other and meshed to the foot.

Here are the original deckplans I posted in the Blue Sun Room. Much larger and easier to work off of...

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=704

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=705

Below are the two other diagrams, one of the upper and lower decks overlaid and the other is my side view as far as I completed it. As you can see, there wasn't a problem with the overall height of any of the substructure for the decks.

If you have any questions concerning anything about the interior design of Serenity, I feel I'm pretty 'intimate' with the series as presented. Just drop me a line and I'll answer, if possible.

Been comming to the forums for a long time but joined up just to post this. Lookin good. I was thinking about doing the same thing but got wrapped up in schoolin (curse you college education!). I was thinking about the Call of Duty Engine (which is in fact a hopped up Quake 3 Engine) but the Source engine allows for a lot more dynamic lighting and physics and what not.

The only problem I see of a Serenity HL2 map is it may not be ideal for Deathmatch games and whatnot. Some sort of capture the flag would be sick though. Flags in the cargo hold and the bridge maybe?

Anyways, like what your doing so far. If ya need any help let me know. Used to use hammer for HL-1, and mapped and scripted heavily (well still do) for Call of Duty. Just got to reacquaint myself with Hammer from using Radient all these years. Also aint that bad with photoshop but dont really have any experience with texturing other than basic stuff. Kepp up teh good work yo!

Gaidheal, your work is awesome, and is the basis for the model I'm building. Your original floor maps have informed the measurements I'm using.

Thank you so much for these new floorplans - they are killer!

I do, however, have some small issues. Or rather, let's say I'm opening it to debate, and I'm hoping you can help me better understand.

In the side picture you've provided, the stairwell leading from the engine room corridor down to the medical bay has multiple sets of stairs in it. This is an elegant solution to the height problem I'm harping on about, but doesn't (unless I've missed something) tie in to either the series or the movie.

It's true that in the series you never see anyone anyone actually go down or up these stairs - apart from the last flight into medbay. So it could be argued that they exist. But in the movie, you have a sequence where Simon and Mal head down this way and the camera tracks with them. No staircases. It's a gently sloping corridor until the flight into the medbay. And this has been the basis for my height issues.

I hasten to add that I do like your solution, and on going back and looking more carefully, I've found at least one shot of River that *implies* there might be a stairwell there as you've drawn it. You've given me a lot to think about.

If I could make a request: can you slap a scale indicator on the overlay you posted above? That would be a help.

Many thanks.

I've added a scale to the overlay, per your request.

As far as all the stairs and the height issues...

The stairs to the front of Serenity (forward passage down to the cargo bay floor) are all accurate and seen in many of the episodes.

The stairs connecting the aft passage to the stairs leading down to the medical bay area are speculation. There are stairs leading from the medical bay area floor up to a small landing and then an approximate 90 degree left takes you up more stairs. This can be seen in the episode "The Train Job" starting at about 9m48s into the episode. Mal & Book are climbing the stairs from the lower deck to the upper deck. After Mal makes the turn and continues toward the front of the ship the scene is cut and he is shown coming up stairs and turning into the small nook off the aft passage between the dining room and the engine room. Book has been talking continuously during this walk and this is where a problem arises. Mal appears to walk up 10-12 steps before he reaches the little upper deck passage. Way short for the height he has to climb to clear the cargo bay below. I personally have reconciled this to the fact that they were exiting one set (the lower decks of Serenity) and entering the second set (the upper decks). For continuity and flow, they didn't show them walking up yet more stairs connecting the decks.

As I said before, I know the stairs in the forward part of the ship are accurate, so the speculation for more stairs to clear the cargo bay seemed fairly obvious to me. The only real question would be where the second landing is at.

If I ever complete the side view of the ship, that particular section of the stairs would be in dashed lines like all other areas of the ship that are never seen on camera, but are assumed to exist. The passage to the rear of the medical bay, for example, or the area Book comes walking out of in the dining room. Pantry maybe?

Long winded, but I hope that helps.

Oh my goodness, you're totally right! How did I miss that? Many thanks! It's wonderful to run into someone as nerdy about this as I am :D

You're clearly bang on about the two sets. The show's creators seem to have tumbled to the height issue, too, based on the changes they made in the movie: lowering both the cargo bay and they entire aft section (stepping down from the dining into the engine room corridor instead of up).

These combined dips solve the need for the landing in the series ship: but there seems to have been a screw up in the FX department. In Serenity, when Mal and Simon walk down from the engine room corridor to the medical bay, the existing stairwell is missing, replaced my a slightly sloping corridor, and thus undoing the whole point of dropping the aforementioned sections of the ship.

I'm going to go with your speculation because unless someone can come up with a more compelling explanation, or Joss Whedon posts here, your idea has a ring of serious truthiness about it. Hope to have new screenshots up by next weekend.

Those qmx blueprints are a dream come true. I just don't have the money for them sadly...

They did release a pdf version of them that's free. It's pretty low res (you can't even read most of the text), but as far as the layout of the ship they work pretty well. You can find them here http://www.serenitystuff.com/2007/03/29/first-look-at-the-serenity-blu
eprints/#more-1306

I extracted the images from that to jpgs. You can shoot me an e-mail at micjwelch gmail.com if you need them.

I actually started an unreal tournament map of Serenity a while back, but it was the first UT map I had ever done, and it didn't turn out very well at all. I plan to start over on it when I get the chance. I had actually thought of modeling Niska's station as well and using it as a capture the flag map.

GHOULFISH

Just curious but has ayone done a complete model of the texturing on the outside of Serenity (I was just wondering)

By the way the plans are really coming along - do you have any idea when you will have completed it?

Anyone try to make this in gtkradiant? (previously known as qeradiant)

It is the map maker used by iD for Quake/Doom, it also works for a few other games such as half life too.

MOONLIGHT

Oh yes. Made a good deal of progress on that sort of thing. However, it got nuked in a hard drive crash (and that was OK, since I used some poor practices and an underpowered computer).

Take a gander at what was at:

http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=14366

Not so impressive in that it has lights and some low-quality textures. Impressive in that it is probably as perfect as it comes when it comes to dimensions.

I'm considering going at it again in my spare time now that I've got a computer that can kick its ass.

Are peeps still working on this? I'd love to be able to walk through a virtual Serenity one day. :)

THEFR00N

Sadly, this project is now dead. Partly it was a lack of time, and partly due to a drive crash: half the map is no longer readable.

It was fun while it lasted, though.

But it's not all over. I am starting from scratch in Google's Sketchup, with the intention of building film sets for use in MovieStorm:
http://www.moviestorm.net

If I can get it up and running, and if someone else can make characters, then maybe we can start making video for some of these excellent fan scripts knocking about ...

WYOMINGBIRD

Hey guys, I see some really nice computer models here. I'm hoping to start building my own static model soon, but I am looking for some section views of Serenity. Since some of you have some very detailed models already I was hoping someone would be willing to send me some jpgs at various fuselage stations. I've found several plan views and profile shots, but nothing that depicts the station outlines. Anyone have anything that would help me? Thanks!

CHLBALLI

Hey all. I've been checking out this thread for a while to see if anyone else was going to rebuild Serenity from the inside. I was really interested in the stuff that TheFr00n was doing in HL2 and was wondering if anyone else was gonna take up the job..since no one did...I started to. If anyone is interested in helping...mostly with textures for now..let me know. It'll be a long road as I am still working full time..but I'd love to see it completed. Let me know! Thanks all.

I'm hoping to have some pictures soon as I get more done..I've got most of the layout for the cargo hold textures and lit...but it needs a lot of the extras that really bring it to life. If anyone has any question/comments that may help..let me know!
