I'm lookin' for resin kit, a finished one, what ever.
I want to get one and not get squashed like a bitty bug with bad castings and poor quality.
Can anyone help me spend my hard earned alliance credits?

I had the same problem you are having...trying to find one of these things!
I have a resin cast that came unpainted that I got through an individual that sells on eBay...you can check there every now and then. There is also another board rpf.invisionzone.com that has posts about lots of things...just search for "firefly", and you will find several post for Mal's pistol (I haven't been there in awhile). A few people sell the resin casts, but I do not have any contact names...give me some time and I will see if I can find any.
I know, a whole lot of "try here and here" and no actual direction...sorry, I am trying!

-EDIT-
This is my original thread...there may be some help in there:

Found a great source...
Phillepes on the RPF.
He supposedly has a resin cast from the gun on the show.
I sent him a PM.

That's the guy! I could not remember his name! The one I have is actually one os his casts...through half-a-dozen hands, probably, but it's one of his.
If you do manage to get one, you will love it! They are quite nice.
Not sure how you are on painting and all, but do check the photos I posted to see what one looks like.

Awesome! Thanks!

I am fairly novice at painting (I don't even know how to airbrush,) But I'll manage. Ive done a few resin models in my life and more than enough regular model kits..

That was the first resin painting I had ever done. I did models as a child, but that was aeons ago...there is at least one thread at the invisionzone board that goes into how to paint, but I would be happy to share if you need help. When you get done, post pics!

That photbucket album was your gun? WOW!
Got any tips for painting?
I'm great with layers, steelwool/sandpaper, and a drybruch, but those pix look like something far more fantastic than that I've produced in the past!

Invisionzone board? On the RPF?

I'll look. I may have to pick your brain when I get the pistol. there is currently a waiting list on those suckers from Phillepes. *sigh*

That link you sent was one that someone actually built around a real pistol (I think)...exactly like the one from the series...I want one of those!
I am also at work, so I can't cruise around looking for it...but when you get a chance, look for it. The guy tells what kind of paints he used, etc.

Thank you for the comments on mine. I am quite happy with the way it turned out. Very simple, too...several layers of flat black, several layers of gold, then several layers of gloss black. Judicious use of very fine sandpaper, steel wool, and touch-ups, and it was done.

Check out this faux wood grain rattle-can painting tutorial Gigatron linked for me on the RPF:
http://www.sci-fire.com/how_to_wood_grain.htm

I'm gonna use it on my Mal pistol grips!

That is nice...just wish I had known about that before! Now I may have to strip the handle and start all over again!

This is the only RPF post I could find with any kind of painting info for a resin Mal pistol.

Yep, that's the one. I wanted to follow those instructions, but after a weekend of trying to find the paints, etc, I gave up and used what I had. The pistol on that thread turned out beautifully, though...if I ever get another one, I will try that treatment. Unless, of course, the next one I get is a functioning replica!

I just called a local game store and they said they had "Tin Bitz" miniatures paint. They said it's a silvery dark bronze.

$3.50/bottle and the bottles are about 2-4 oz. I might head over there tonight after work and see what it looks like, but that's a lot of cash for a tiny bottle you know.

I am assuming it's about the size of a testors model paint bottle. I think I'd need like five Tin Bitz bottles to do a mal pistol...

I managed to put several coats of each color on my pistol, and still had a little less than half of each left when I was done. These were the model-painting bottles, too...the really small ones. So, you should have plenty.
From experience, be sure to put extra thick coats on the raised areas...I managed to sand down to the resin a few times and had to do touch-ups.

I picked up a bottle of Chaos Black and Tin Bitz. They were $3.50 USD each! My local game store had plenty of them. It was the first place I looked. I'd be willing to bet that two or three of the other game stores I know about would carry it to. If you really want some, you might be able to order them from The Game Preserve. They have a web site.
